They are f'd up. They said the same thing to Shawn Johnson when she got injured and came back at the age of 19. They told her she'd never make it because her body type wasn't ideal anymore and she'd never be able to keep up at her age. She quit not because she believed them but because she didn't want to put up with their bullsh*t (emotional/psychological abuse) anymore. I believe the world of elite gymnastics is a very sick one myself..

ugh, having my dad coach me like that would've been a nightmare. i'm sure she was used to it, but it seems like a tough position. too much pressure. and to have your dad tell you that you aren't physically strong? no thanks.
Nastia had multiple falls, was still recovering from an injury and still grabbed a bronze medal. All those squats/falls were 0.5 deductions. If she hadn’t been injured, she would have blown away the rest of the competition. Ankle injuries are so so so hard to come back from! I have a chronically sprained ankle and all it takes is just stepping wrong to make it flare up. I can’t imagine what all the tumbling and landings did to her ankle!
Right? Its sad what these super competition sports have people doing, pushing your body past it being ridiculous, get back to practice before a broken bone is healed, etc. Its so crazy! Nastia was incredible and so strong, her dad was wrong.
After watching this again, I have to commend Nastia for how far she went from here...on to the AA in Beijing! ! This was her first all 4 events meet since her surgery and she worked her ass off all the way to the olympics. And both girls almost...almost made the 2012 team. Historical gymnasts.
Do you notice the way Shawn's trainer greets her? With a smile and a hug everytime? And the way Nastias dad has the hard russian look? No sympathy or a hey you did great hun! You can tell how hard he is on her...but anyway...they are both so wonderful gymnasts in their own way Nastia is Grace and Shawn is Power
Agree, but I think they had different philosophy to begin with. Chow's emphasis was happiness above all, I think he insisted that Shawn had a normal life outside of gymnastics. I think Valeri honestly would've let Nastia just dabble in gymnastics if that was what she wanted (her book said her parents didn't want her to do gymnastics at all), but she wanted to win big, so Valeri got serious.

Everyone has bad days. And in the end, Nastia came back with tremendous performances in the 2008 olympics and stronger than ever. Both unbelievable athletes that made history.

With these two amazingly talented gymnasts, it comes down to 2 things 1. Prefer elegant dance moves and amazing difficulty; or 2. Prefer amazing nonstop power and difficulty. Its a choice. If they are both 100% on their game?? It came down to what the particular judges like better. I would NOT want to be a judge with these ladies. Both amazing. Both made USA so proud!!!! Gymnastics will never be the same after '08. It was the end of an era
I prefer the elegant, longer lines of a gymnast like Liukin or Komova over short, stocky gymnasts like Johnson or Jordyn. It's a preference and highly subjective - not taking anything away from any of them. They are all very talented and deserving obviously.
A Roper You are absolutely right. And the international judges tend to like the longer lines in a gymnast. With that being said, it's just more common for a gymnast to be smaller and muscular. Notice Nadia doesn't perform many "backwards" tumbling elements. Her dad has even said she is a "fragile" gymnast. Her routines were carefully choreographed. Same with Khorkina who was very tall. (Sounds odd calling a young woman who is only 5'3 or a little above "tall" lol)

I mean, Simone is the GOAT but jesus, Shawn Johnson was so so sooo talented and so unbelievably consistent, I don't think there's ever been another american gymnast with that level of consistency! I used to get mad at people comparing Jordyn Wieber to her because hell no, Shawn was fearless and delivered 99% of the time. Sadly her career was kinda short, I'm sure if she had been injury-free (and had wanted it, of course) she would've accomplished so much more in the sport.

It's always the stupid adults bringing the drama into sports. Pitting Nastia and Shawn to were they felt you couldn’t like both. Putting Jordyn on a ridiculous pedestal and then saying Aly was "lucky" to qualify. Simone reminds me so much of Shawn, especially on beam. Shawn is more fluid, but the similarity is still there. I love it. Plus they are both so cute.

Lol! Al Trautwig is the worst. Nastia was “sooo old” that she became Olympic champion the very next year. I’m so glad he doesn’t commentate gymnastics anymore.
She was only 17 also, like, what the hell. That's not that old in gymnastics either. Anything passed, like, 20 would be older I think

It's always the stupid adults bringing the drama into sports. Pitting Nastia and Shawn to were they felt you couldn’t like both. Putting Jordyn on a ridiculous pedestal and then saying Aly was "lucky" to qualify. Over criticizing any of Simone's mistakes because she always has to outperform everyone and then saying everybody else is just fighting for silver and bronze. RIDICULOUS!
