  • @modernistmixing

    8:41 - loudness optimizer isn't that complicated.
    When streaming platforms measure the loudness of a song, they measure the full duration.
    However - they omit the parts that aren't loud enough and only take the parts that are louder than a certain level.
    So lets say you have an intro verse chorus and outro. Lets assume the integrated loudness of intro and verse are at -15 lufs but the chorus and outro are at -7 lufs.
    Spotify simply ignores the intro and verse, and says "this song is -7lufs loud, I'll reduce 7 dbs to bring it to -14 lufs".
    Had the intro and verse been slightly louder at say -13 lufs, then the average would be calculated at something like -10 lufs and Spotif would say "I'll reduce it -4 dbs to bring the average to -14 lufs". So, the chorus in this case will not play at -14 lufs, it will be playing at -11 lufs. 3 Dbs louder.
    Loudness optimizer tries to identify these "will stay under the threshold - therefore not be included in the loudness measurement" sections of your song and brings their level up - this way they are included in the loudness measurement and they bring the overall integrated loudness of the song DOWN.
    This was interesting to me too - but I did measure about a dozen of my mixes and it suggested minimal changes (most of my mixes were like 98% measured with very little sections below threshold) so while its definitely useful, it wasn't much use to me.

    SpectralLayers 10 (v11 is about to be released on June 12) blows RX right out of the water, when it comes to mix rebalancing (stem separation). If you're only interested in "lifting" vocals, there's the SpctralLayers Elements. If you're a Cubase Pro user, I believe SpectralLayers One still comes bundled with it.

    Mid/Side is useful when working with stereo recordings. Recently I had to recover audio that was unintelligible due to it being a recording of a conference in an extremely reverberant large room. The conference speaker was not mic'd, and you could hear some other person speaking through a wall. This was recorded at the back of the room via a smartphone, and to the left and right was just people moving around on squeaky chairs and making random noises. There was also tons of hiss. Due to the sheer amount of reverb, and the talker not projecting their voice, no De-reverbing tool I had worked. I used RX9 deverb, GOYO/CLEAR, Clarity-deverb, Accusonous deverb. Even when split to left and right mono files did it help much. How ever splitting the audio into Center, L and R, I managed to recover and clean up the audio.

  • @SVVGEofficial
    @SVVGEofficial Před měsícem +4

    I think the top thing missed all the time about music rebalance is that it’s not a stem isolation tool. It’s called music rebalance because that’s the use case it was made for: all the stems you get out it will null against the original track when you mix them together again. This means that, let’s say as a mastering engineer, you get a track from a client which is already mixed and you only got a stereo file from it. The most common situation would be a 2 track recorded by a band from a live performance. Taking all those stems and separating them out lets you do light processing to them, for example: transient designer on drums, add reverb on vocals and guitar, add some thickness to bass with light saturation, etc. It’s not supposed to be this Mr. Clean magic eraser of audio, but with each iteration it has been getting better and producing less artifacts. But it will always be worse than a plugin/algorithm that solely focuses on extracting a vocal instead of giving you all stems without creating any artifacts when you mix the stems back together. I will add that it would definitely be helpful if they let you toggle the algorithm when you isolate only one instrument and have it be super duper aggressive and give you the option to have these artifacts if you so choose, but it would definitely not be a rebalancing tool anymore, it would be an isolation tool. This distinction may seem arbitrary but for some specific use-cases the music rebalance tool as it is now is a life-saver. That’s kind of the point of RX, it’s to have a suite of specialized tools that you might not need today but you might need tomorrow. To make a comparison: You might not need an impact drill to screw on a motherboard today, but you might need one tomorrow when you’re helping a buddy with home repairs. Could you use the impact drill to screw on the motherboard? Yes, but it isn’t the best tool for the job. Could you use a manual screwdriver to tap wood screws into a wall? Also yes, but it’s definitely not the best tool for the job. It’s all about having all of the tools so when you need them you have them.

    EQing the Side and Mid differently during mastering is something I do on every single project all the time. You can make things appear wider due to psychoacoustics while avoiding the phantom center being overly strident, for one thing. Boosting top end on the Side only, avoiding harsh sibilants and hihats competing in the Mid against each other comes to mind. Certain types of audio repairing in the Mid only can be a lot less detrimental to the overall sound, e.g. come across as less dull in the top end. M/S is an everyday tool, used on lots of different things.

    • @Weaverbeats
      @Weaverbeats  Před měsícem +1

      I do mid side eq often too. What I was referencing as something not being needed commonly is mid side processing with rx's specialized modules such as de-click, de-noise, dialog isolate etc... Good thing to add, because I'm sure there are times it will be the best choice. Definitely not common though.

    • @DerDanko
      @DerDanko Před měsícem +2

      @@Weaverbeats Gotcha. Granted these modules won't be seeing M/S all too often. Having said that, you can probably improve the dialog isolate a lot by addressing the Mid signal only just sayin'... Same goes for the crappy music rebalancer, when it comes to bass. When it comes to post production on recordings (not finished DAW mixes), certain microphone techniques will make the M/S feature a game changer for de-reverb as well. I guess, as you already point out in the video, unless you're a professional super-user doing stuff in RX on a daily basis for a living it's probably not worth the upgrade. (I don't think RX11 is worth the upgrade at all though, and decided against upgrading all our licenses at work because I am not going to let them milk us)

Probably not, given the absurd predatory upgrade prices they have and the fact that the changes aren't at all groundbreaking enough to justify that. These shouldn't be major version updates, but rather minor ones. However, the reason they do this is to remove the incentive to buy perpetual licenses so that people choose the subscription service instead (so that you get all updates for free). As a funk-rock-metal guitarist into audio engineering and producing - I can tell you Izotope's guitar denoise doesn't work very well aside from hum/amp noise - granted I haven't tried the latest module. I've tried the previous module and was thoroughly unimpressed. It kinda works a bit, but it's not how those pristine guitar recordings get done. The older method was to go into the recording in your daw, and automate volume drops on the noises - hand slides, fret noise etc - And that still works way better than Izotope guitar denoise, but the ultimate way to do it today is with spectral editing, you can basically go in, lower or take out noises completely to your hearts content. I'll use Spectralayers in Cubase to do it personally. That thing is like Photoshop for audio. Amazing.
    I think you can do that in RX too if I remember right, but I don't really use RX, have no need. Cubase plus Spectralayers is all I need for my work. I have pretty good technique on guitar, I try to keep all my noises to a minimum to begin with, even amp noises are mostly cut off with gates during the recording, and that helps a lot, saves a lot of time in editing ;) But sometimes you just have to edit down some noises and manually is much better than RX's auto module. In any serious recording - the engineer is going to do it manually, not with an auto tool like RX guitar denoise.
    It's just like de-essing vocals. If you go in manually and automate volume drops just on the plosives and sibilance, then only do just a little of bit of deessing on a plugin later - you get a much nicer result than completely relying on the de-essing plugin. It's time consuming, but the result is much much much better and any serious recording will have the engineer fine tuning manually like this and not taking an auto-shortcut.

    Nice video. But I would say Rx is a bit of a mixed product. I think all the people I know that work in post production(audio for video) use some version of RX. I used to think music production is not their main focus, but they added music related features in time and they include it in the music production suite sale going on right now… I’m not sure their acquisition is doing the product any good…

    I managed to get okay results from RX10 de-hum and de-clip, but obviously that varies track by track. Otherwise, I haven't gotten RX to do any magic tricks. SpectraLayers is decent for stem separation, it's VERY good for manual edits (removing coughs etc), and Davinci Resolve Studio does denoise and dialogue isolation+balancing, and VSL Vienna Suite's Exciter for adding a bit of sheen to old timey footage...
    I have not found a single good de-reverb that's not for human speech. Concert footage with reverb in it? Kiss your ass goodbye, shiny plugins won't save you.

      Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand. You came into this world for a reason, and you God has a purpose for you, to make you prosper and give you a good life. But if you disobey and sin, you have fallen short of God’s glory, as we all did, but for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Jesus is knocking at the door, open the door, and He will come to eat with you and eat with Him. For it is written, man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word which comes from the mouth of God. Every man has one life, and after this comes judgment, will you be just before God? Jesus said this, if anyone believes in Me, although they die, they will live. Jesus said, if you loved Me, you would have obeyed My commandments. Two commandments were given to us by Jesus, to love God with all your heart, mind, and strength, and love others like ourselves. God is Holy, so be holy, turn away from all evil and follow Jesus, believe and humble yourself before God.

    I honestly think iZotope felt off. I own all of their plugins, including RX 10 Advance. I don't need the new version; I have better tools to remove noise and reverb from recordings. Clear by Supertone does a fantastic job and is way cheaper and faster. Also, I have Ozone 11, and I'm using more Masterplan as it does a tremendous job mastering music. I knew RX11 would be mid-upgrade since they were pushing hard for people to buy the old version before the new one was available. Also, it makes think the beta testers are marketers, not audio professionals.

    I don't want to defend izotope, but Music Rebalance is Not a stem separator/maker. You gotta stop spewing the hate playboi. It's meant to sound correct in THE CONTEXT of the other elements of the 2-track. I've tried to mention this to you on your streams, you have the wrong perception of this tool. You're thinking of it like a producer, not a post-production engineer. UVR will NOT phase out against the original 2-track, additionally if there's any silence at the the start of the track it removes it, now you've lost your timing! I've tested it a couple of times. Music Rebalance will PHASE OUT against the original 2-track and preserves file length time: this is VERY important for ENGINEERS that work in POST or MIXING.

  • @5minuterevolutionary493
    @5minuterevolutionary493 Před měsícem

    There is a basic issue with RX. Any tools designed to "save" vocal tracks that change the tone of said tracks noticeably, they are tail chasing dogs. Not a single one of these fixers avoids breaking the primary, front facing character of a vocal. So, sure, short clips of a person who does not show up elsewhere in a documentary? But a singer for three minutes? A character or person you are supposed to care about and get to know? Absolutely no way I would ever let RX near it.
