- Frost, fog, and steam. The bitterly cold winter conditions in the Isle of Purbeck made for a challenging day, as a thick fog set in over the Swanage Railway, providing interesting atmospherics for their festive services. 2023 marks the first time that 'The Polar Express' format has been seen on the Swanage Railway, indicating a move towards more daylight operations, and away from the 'Steam and Lights' services which were the main staple of festive services in recent years.
This format would see 5 return trips made over the railway across the day. The carriage set comprised of 7 carriages, which necessitated being top-and-tailed due to platform lengths and the length of run-around loops at both Swanage and Norden. As such all workings towards Norden would be led by 33111, with the returns worked by 34028, the latter of which would provide some spectacular soundtracks. Hauling a load of 7 carriages and an idling diesel on the drawbar, and not forgetting its own tender, 34028 would be in charge of roughly 350 tons as it thundered up Corfe bank.
Despite much positive public reception to the services, there has been some criticism of the railway regarding the expensive ticket prices. It's worth noting that the whole event is organised by an outside company, who effectively hire the railway to use as their stage, and set ticket prices accordingly. The prices are set to cover the hire cost of the railway and their subsequent operating fees, as well as the hiring and operating fees of the locomotives used, all of which are privately owned by seperate groups.

I like the way it plunges out of the fog
Thanks for leaving out the parts where I blew off on shed 😂
On certain railways in UK the engine is required to lift its safety valves, to prove them, before leaving the shed yard. So nothing to be ashamed of, you were carrying out a health and safety check!
Not a problem 😉
Lovely video , thanks !
Cheers
This is so enjoyable again the scenery and the locomotive keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoyed it
Very atmospheric
Oh what a superb video. You just can’t beat a Bulleid and a Crompton - steam and fog - just fantastic. I really enjoy your videos Thank You.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
Wonderfully atmospheric in the most challenging of conditions, particularly the shots after dark, well done! Great sound quality too. Reminds me of the late David Jenkinson's comment about 'essence of railway'. Many thanks!
Thank you for the kind words, they're greatly appreciated!
Another brilliant video, well done for braving those conditions. The slip was well caught at the very end of the last video. Many thanks for all the videos this year, they've been superb.
I love it!! Hats off for braving the weather and sharing the excellent atmospheric results, Matt!
Thank you
Beautiful video, greetings 🚂🔝👍👋
Thank you
Very atmospheric weather conditions. Really adds to the mood.
Certainly got very lucky on the day. Cheers
Perfect, thank you
Cheers
A light pacific from 71b bournemouth mpd, and in the dark as well wonderful thankyou.
Sorted the men from the boys yesterday! I had the same atmospheric effects near Westbury videoing the Black 5
Viewing from Levin NZ....96 km north of Wellington.... yes... the problem of balancing costs with affordability. Here the brilliant Steam Inc company which maintains and restores carriages from 1906 on, and has a pair of heavy duty Da diesel electrics, with heavyweight 4-2, 4-8-4 steam locomotives.....apart from the cost of coal, and oil,,, there is the track hiring fee for Kiwi Rail, and some paid staff on the days excursions run... for this couple living on Superannuation, a no-frills lifestyle,,, 60 pound Each trips are out of the question. But having worked on a heritage railway elsewhere in NZ, I do understand the costs/ appeal dilemma.
Another stunning day in the UK so it seems.
choo choo 11:57 whistle blows
I actually went on that at caledonian railway yesterday
Good video with The Polar Express :)
Thank you
Hi I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely love your videos. I also wanted to ask you something. Will you make a compilation video of the steam engines in England on New Year's day? I am just wondering since I have seen the compilation videos of them you have uploaded in the past like the ones from all four of the seasons. I would like to see one which would be titled "Best of British steam in 2023".
Thanks very much, the kind words really are appreciated!
I used to like making those seasonal videos, but ultimately had to give them up due to the heavy commitment that they required. To stop them all turning out similar, each one necessitated travelling to 5-7 varied preserved lines on top of railtours during each season. The costs kept mounting, as did the stress, while the view counts dwindled.
I have been looking at doing a compilation for this year, but have not started nor commited to anything.
All aboard the polar express
Hi, I'm planning on getting a new camera for Christmas to improve the quality of my videos. What do you use?
Panasonic HC-X1500E
Not bad for eddystone to be disguising herself as a polar express engine even though she’s still a southern bullied pacific engine
Can you reply?
Hello
They seriously repainted her
34028's wearing the same coat of paint it received during its most recent overhaul, completed in 2021.
The branding on the tender is just transfers.
Nice shots but dislike it when shots go into an unnatural wide angle setting as the engine passes. Professional cameramen always use 1:1 at this point.
Each to their own
