- This is the first in this series and is about the restoration of 100 year old historic wooden yawl Pantagruel and her owner German captain Micha. Pantagruel sunk in tropical cyclone Yasa in Fiji in December 2020, but Micha refused to let that be the end of Pantagruel and spent the next year bringing her back to life.
I’ve split this story into 6 parts:
Part 1) The accident (this episode)
Part 2) Above deck - the restoration of the hull and above deck structures
Part 3) Below deck - the restoration of the interior
Part 4) The systems - fixing and replacing the systems
Part 5) Fiji - Micha’s reflections on restoring a boat in Fiji

My partner Timo and I have a story of our own... last year we bought an Open 66 ft race sailing boat originally designed and built by the famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa, which he raced in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), becoming the first non-frenchman to finish the race.
We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!

Amazing achievement. But so worthwhile for such a lovely boat. A Beneteau or Hanse would probably have been scrapped after such a mauling. I was in Fiji in jan 1993 when cyclone Kina hit, the forces of destruction ate not something i will ever forget.

Nice work, this documentary, Jo! Micha ist one of the oldest friend of mine and I was sure, after he lost his boat, that he will rebuild it again. That’s just him. We had a phonecall, shortly after that happened and he was devastated but I knew! Thanks to the crowdfunding and the people around him. That’s the old captain 💪🏻

Really good story; seeing footage before and during the sinking was very interesting. He’s done an incredible job and I’m sure she’ll have decades more added to her life as a result.
Thanks Charles yeah was amazing to get the footage from Jaro of the actual event, will show more footage of inside panta in the next few vids. Yeah in the end she’s probably in a better condition than she was before, so the story has a happy ending!

What a great idea to make a series out of such an interesting story. There are similar stories but few very well documented ( like Tally-ho , sunk and rebuilt).
I remember Nando Fa and the race very well. That was race with Ellen Macathy too.
Whops , Ellen was 10 yrs later!
Nandor was the era of BOC RACE ( his first solo rtw race )and john martin. Bertie Reed don McIntyre, Isabelle Autissier etc.

Most important part of this story is missing. Its whole coverage of rescuing the boat. That would be awesome challenge to watch.

Not sure if I missed it somewhere but it would really be nice to know some history and some specs for the Pantagruel. It must have gone through a serious refit years ago and now a new salvage refit. About all I know is she's 100 years old and I think the song is saying she was deliberately sunk during WW1 or WW2 to keep her out of enemy hands? So glad Captain Micha didn't give up and save that beautiful vessel. Thanks for the awesome video. Blessings from Battle Creek, Mich. USA.

How this even happened? It slipped from anchors or chain or ropes broke or what?
All his lines broke, the anchor still held but the stern of the boat got trapped under a rock and when the tide came up she started sinking
How can you fix the boat like this if expecting 50kn on more wind?? With ppl on board?

Is it just me, but I think I could of found a better parking spot and I was just born yesterday. Something very fishy about that parking spot.
