- AN EXCLUSIVE DOCUMENTARY.
Lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, on the island of Tahiti, lies a village that's home to one of the world's most beautiful waves - Teahupo'o. Facing mystical mountains covered in a wild and luxuriant jungle, the perfect wave of Teahupo'o wraps around the reef to create a powerful tube that attracts the best surfers on the planet.
Photographer Tim Mckenna has been documenting this paradise for over 25 years. From Laird Hamilton's Millennium Wave to WSL competitions, the locals pushing the limits, and the upcoming Olympic Games, he has been a privileged witness to Teahupo'o.
Alongside all the big names in surfing, he has seen the emergence of a generation of local kids who have come to tame this mythical wave. Among them are Tahurai Henry and Gilbert Teave.
Aware of how lucky they are to have grown up in this paradise, they dedicate all their energy and heart to preserving the place and passing on their culture to future generations. They are the guardians of the temple, the heirs of the village. They are the children of Teahupo'o.
OXBOW is proud to present CHILDREN OF TEAHUPOO, a 36-minute film produced by Showcast, directed by Hand Studio.

So so so sad. Happened in so many places and always new places get destroyed. They convince the local people that this business will bring money, wellfare, jobs for their children. Then foreign investors and speculators will buy their lands and properties for what seems good money for the poorer locals. Then prices of land and properties will rocket high up, living right their will become too expensive for the locals, jobs will go to people that for too low salaries spend a season or some and the place just becomes a business of outsiders, the money goes to other countries where the investors reside and locals will have lost their paradise, money and jobs, and most of all, the land they could live on without all this business.
Just like Cornwall, UK local people born in Cornwall cannot afford to buy a house there anymore....
@@peterkeeves8240 true, you guys just described Thailand's entire coastline, locals are absolutely priced out of living there.
I hate the capitalistic mindset. People all around the world were living great and then they were told they could obtain better, but it was all a ruse.
@@risemahadeva the accumulation of assets is not just a function of capitalism, there are oligarchs atop the myriad political/economic systems. what we need to stop is the preternatural greed that some people have, but I dunno how we do that...
This is yet another reason i keep telling people we should aim for a world without money.
If we can make it through climate change, we might be able to do it. Our biggest challenge, like with climate change as well, is our global mostly unwilling attitude.
Tragic :( I swear it is my dream to see this paradise with my own eyes but I just could'nt go. I have too much respect for the simplicity of these people's lives. I hope the governement of Polynesia will be worthy of respect by avoiding the tragedy threatening their poeple. I beg pro surfer's community to wake up and protect the gift nature gives them to do what they love. Have a beautiful day, from brussels.
You said exactly what I feel. I'm French, I want to go, it's a true dream but I don't want to be part of the destruction and mass tourism.
Money....money...money....the World we live in....
Full support to the children of teahupoo... Keep your spot wild!!!!
ça a deja commencé...

I went to Tahiti and Moorea for 3 weeks in September 2005 and my Tahitian hubby at time took me to Teahupoo and even on small 4-6 ft day the current was insane. The most magical place on earth such beauty and energy. I love this film as I've been huge fan of McKenna photography and to finally see the genius himself and his story is truly incredible. Thank you for sharing. ❤ ❤
Great production! Great initiative! We want teauhpo as it is!
Beautiful ! Nicely shot. Great story. I only hope the commercialism of the Olympics does not ruin this surfing treasure for generations to come.
Amaaaaazing doc guys ! Surfers should stand up and everybody says NO we are not surfing on the Olympics ... at least they should try to find a proper way compite and save the life and nature ...
Excellent documentary ! Gilbert grom charges a true soul surfer
Gilbert is the real deal, good kid,,he going be the man future generations look to,on not just surf,,the whole package,,
🙏
My tears fall for the children of Teahupo'o, they fall at the thought of what might be lost from this delicately balanced village ecosystem. I wish with my whole heart for the whole world that greed is replaced with a peaceful harmony with nature
Absolutely stunning moving outstanding documentary - tone, editing, soundtrack… all wonderful. I have watched dozens of Teahupoo surf clips on CZcams but your film really stands out on a different level doing the subject justice - huge respect. 👏👏
As modern surfing goes, Teahupoo was "discovered" by multiple time bodyboarding world champion, Mike Stewart, who used to surf Teahupoo by himself for many years. Mike originally called the break, " The End of the Road"
Load of crap. Tahitians always have surfed there.
@@johnwinieski6499 Might want to check your facts before firing off such confident answers. Teahupo was surfed for the first time ever by two local surfers in 1985.
Bodyboarders Mike Stewart and Ben Severson took it from there, and the fame and renown of " The End of the Road", or Teahupo grew from there
Bo
keep Teahupo'o as it is ! it's a beautifull documentary, and i really hope for them , that everything will be preserved after that, WE can't destroy that in any way. Oxbow you just made an exceptionnel video for sure
Fabuleux reportage ! Simple et magnifique. Sans artifices. Comme ce lieu.

Great little movie about the world's most outstanding wave and the beautiful people who live and surf there.
I hope we can be sensible and not destroy the essence of that amazing place.

I really hope the Olympic Games wont change the soul of this magnificent place, makes me sad to see the sadness in Gilbert eyes, thats their paradise and true surfers
Incredible and important work. Thank you for making and sharing this.
super Beau, Super beauty-Full. May Jah protect TEAHUPO'O endlessly.
Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know and my heartfelt hugs to you.

Already excited to watch season 7. I’ll be thrilled to see a SOG on next round! Please use the same 15gl pots from this season showing if you would reamend or not and how!
Keep you the good work for the community Jeremy!
beautiful - magnifique
Very revealing documentary showcasing a potential huge problem for the gentle people of this little Tahitian village. I will go there next year and I hope I find the place is not ruined by the spot light of the 2024 Olympics. Lets hope I find these gentle water warriors living the same beautiful uncomplicated life
Great video!
🙏
Beautiful film.
Amazing film, surfing spirit lives in Tahiti

Excellent
beautiful place with beautiful people in it
Protect and fight for keep the nature on that peace of heaven!!
Wow this is very sad! I feel you guys it happend the same shit in my hometown village 😢
The Most beautiful wave .
The kids (and adults) are enjoying their environment as their people have always done for many millennia. It makes sense that when you live on an island you have to get comfortable with water.
This needs to be covered in the news
Merci !
nice
Magnifique

Beautiful story ❤ hopefully the olympics don’t destroy your beautiful paradise 😢
Get the best surfers in the world to boycott it! Surfers rely on nature for what they love. Band together!
Bravo❤
amazing. sad! But unfinished !
Sad reality 😔
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Not worth ruining the reef to build the Olympic stands.
well done 1 luv yeah....i can relate about the village of Lahaina...aloha and mahalo
Great video, and as an older surfer, skater/snow boarder, I too have concerns about the Olympics coming in and ruining the area. The Olympics are 2, 3 weeks long, so they’ll be gone, but their impact will last years. It would be one thing if they were to conform to the village, but they’re not doing that. They’re altering the landscape, which is bullshite in my opinion. France has Hossegar, so why can’t they have it there? And I understand the concern of the locals worried about their spot being known now, because the possibility of developers coming in and “Developing” something that that doesn’t need to be developed, ie hotels and mass tourism has now increased. I sincerely hope this doesn’t happen. And if you are a tourist going there, show respect to the community and the culture, and if you are going to surf, please learn surf etiquette. Too many idiots don’t learn surfing etiquette…..😡
so sad to think that i dont no if i will could surf this whave once in my life
The only solution is that local government does not get blind by dollar signs and does not permit foreign investments and businesses that will not make life better for the people that live there now. Limitted construction, only local business and limitted tourism business. Tourism has not made any place on earth better.
Its the beginning of the end for the end of the road
Facts… so sad
@1:22 dreams....
Using jet skis to get onto a wave is the same thing as taking a helicopter ride most of the way up Mount Everest.
getting back on that wave after a terrible wipe out is like soooo getting back on the fucking horse again. hail to those who go back out there again and again and boo to those who destroy this spot.
