Malcolm X is one of my all time favorites. Amazing film. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to make a special trip down to B&N to grab that.
Hello, Stewart! Malcolm X 4K is definitely a worthwhile pickup for sure!
One of the great film-going events in my life was in '92, when my old hippy parents took me, as a 10 year old child, to see _Malcolm X,_ a truly _epic_ cinematic event. I was already a huge fan of Spike Lee (and Public Enemy) since my mother had showed me _Do The Right Thing_ on VHS when I was 8 or 9 - and I already loved Denzel Washington, as well...
But I wasn't prepared for the emotional experience the film was gonna put me thru. I'll just say, along with Oliver Stone's _JFK,_ which my parents took me to see a year earlier (Ya, I know, my folks are the best! 😁), _Malcolm X_ became my favorite and most-rewatched film. Those two films made me wanna be a filmmaker more than any other in my young childhood.
I, of course, immediately picked up "The Autobiography...", and read it over and over. Malcolm is, imo, by far the closest the USA has to a Christ-figure. As Ossie Davis said in his eulogy, _"He died... so that we may live."_
PS. Found your channel cause I had to make sure CC didn't ruin the 4K release like they did with _Citizen Kane,_ in which the digipak is so complicated that you gotta touch the bottom of the disc just to get it out the box! 🤬🤦♂️ So glad it's a regular digipak... now I can buy it with no reservations. ✊🏼🥰
BTW... Went NUTS on the 50% off Criterion Sale, since I heard the CC fired 20% of their staff. I got scared right quick lol... Hoping they're around forever, producing physical releases (along with the _amazing_ streaming channel).
Was trying to keep them alive just off my orders 😆 but I bought some all-time classics. Purchase includes: _The Ascent, L'Avventura, Rules Of The Game, Elevator To The Gallows, Harakiri, Come And See, Night Of The Hunter, The Cremator, La Notte, A Special Day, State Of Siege, The Organizer, Pale Flower, The Before Trilogy, John Cassavetes: 5 Films, Letter Never Sent, The Cranes Are Flying, Mr. Klein, Bitter Rice, Il Sorpasso, Ivan's Childhood, The Double Lives Of Veronique, 12 Angry Men, The Executioner, The Tin Drum, Gate Of Eden, Divorce Italian Style, Christ Stopped At Eboli, Night On Earth, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, The Ballad Of Narayama, Gate Of Hell, The Pornographers, Onibaba, Cat People, Story Of A Prostitute_ and _Rififi._
All absolutely incredible films... by far, the biggest Criterion order of my life lol - and the month ain't over!
Hello, there! Thank you for sharing your experience watching Malcolm X back in ‘92 and your experiences with other Spike Lee films back in the day. This new digipack 4K edition from Criterion is the real deal. Highly recommended!
@@20thand21stMovies Absolutely, _thank you!_ You got a new subscriber, for sure 😁
Happy Holidays James. So cool to get some DigiPaks again. Can’t wait to get my hands on these. Awesome releases!
Yes, F V, these two releases are the real deal. Hope you enjoy yours when you pick them up. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃!
2 films I'll be picking up on this month's Criterion collection sale.
Really good titles to pick up for sure 😀.
You got WALL·E!!!
great pickups. I am super excited to pick those up.
Yes, I decided to go ahead and get Wall-E and very glad I did 😀. Hope you enjoy your copies of these when you get them. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃!
@@20thand21stMovies thank you, hope you have a nice thanksgiving as well.
I purchased both titles and had them arrive in the mail yesterday.
Wall-E being a film that was very much a part of my childhood and is still to this day my favorite Pixar film. Malcolm X being a blind buy, but given myself really loving all of the Spike Lee Joints that I've seen to this point plus the critical reception of Malcolm X, I think it was safe to say as a solid blind buy. I do plan on watching it tonight given how November is the 30th anniversary of Malcolm X, not to mention Spike Lee is holding a special screening of the film in New York tonight. So I thought I might “join in” my way by watching it myself tonight as well.
Both titles interestingly include a feature-length documentary included in their releases which is quite special to see. But for me, Wall-E takes the cake for the best release of the two. It just is packed from wall to wall filled with supplements everywhere. And it's booklet just brings a giant smile to my face whenever scrolling through it looking at all of the storyboards and older design ideas for Wall-E plus the notebook-like design to everything is so fun and clever. I could not be happier with this release. It is honestly my favorite release of 2022 and might be one of the best individual title releases Criterion has ever made. I hope this isn't just a one-off release for Criterion, rather the start of a new collaboration with Disney. Also given the recent announcement of Bob Chapek's firing as Disney's President and bringing Bob Iger back in to take over the company again, I'm guessing if Iger receives word about this release. He might be paying close attention to how it sells and might decide to greenlight more releases through Criterion for other disney-owned titles.
Hello, Magnitude Rev! Glad to hear you picked up both titles as well. I had a chance to watch Malcolm X last night for the first time in years and man does it look great. What a powerful film and a powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington. Started watching Wall-E last night as well and it will be interesting to see if there will be future Disney releases from Criterion. Fingers crossed.
_Malcolm X_ is one of the safest blind-buys in all of film! 😉🥰
James,
Glad to hear you went for it & grabbed both movies! I’ve never seen Malcolm X, but especially after that powerful ending in Do the Right Thing that I rewatched recently with my family…I definitely would like to learn more about him as a sociopolitical figure!
In school, we unfortunately were raised in our curriculum to barely even learn about him because they made him seem like this enemy who instigated violence when really (at least from what I somewhat know now), it was really the fact that he believed in the right of self-defense. I really wish they taught us more of the facts when I was young, if we could learn the brutal & sad story of MLKJR we by all means should’ve likewise learnt about Malcolm X too. Sorry for the random politics rant, but that’s just me!
Now about WALL•E, something interesting that both your titles have in common is that they both definitely have a lot to say about the world we live in with their social commentary. Of course about different issues, and Malcolm X being a little more forefront about it from what it seems, though WALL•E has so much to say about taking care of our Earth & cherishing the world we live in. It definitely went over my head when I was little & this first came out, but man oh man…it’s message aged like fine wine!
I wish you a great day ahead of you James, God bless!
fritski, thank you for your comments! Both of these films are excellent and you make an excellent point about the commonality they share in the social commentary. Two very different films but each with a clear message to humanity.
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving holiday!
Another Criterion-loving James, here - happy to just now discover this channel... and I gotta say, I can't wait to get my hands on the CC's edition of _Malcolm X!_ If you liked _Do The Right Thing,_ then prepare yourself for a masterpiece.

PS. They teach much more about MLK, and not Malcolm, in our schools because it's much, much easier to defang the radicalism of King. But, make no mistake - they were both radical!
@@20thand21stMovies and to you too brother, to you & your family both!
X is a CLASSIC
Yes, Malcolm X from Spike Lee is so good and features one of Denzel Washington’s best performances.
Dang dude!!! Those look fresh. I didn't see those on my Criterion run. May have to go back for another look.
They just released today which is probably why you didn't see them.
Hey, Huck! Malcolm X and Wall-E just came out today and based on what I’ve seen so far, definitely worth picking up!
Criterion has done a great job on both of these. For me, they're definitely the biggest change around studio in 2022. I felt their early releases were a little poor in quality, but I've nothing but good stuff from them this year.
2022 has been a really nice year of Criterion releases for sure.
Whoop Whoop I'll be picking up walle very soon
Oh yeah! Wall-E 4K is a very nice looking release indeed.
Picked up both. Great transfers.
Awesome. Enjoy, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving James!
I saw that Spike Lee was selling signed editions of the new Malcolm X 4k, and decided to buy a title or two less than I normally do at the B&N sale so I could afford to shell out a little extra for that. Malcolm X is probably my favorite Spike Lee Joint and also probably somewhere on the list of my favorite films of all time, so it just made sense - I'm so excited to see how the 4k transfer is when it gets here.
WALL-E is a great film that I haven't seen in a long long time, and I was planning to pick it up eventually but it wasn't highest priority. However, watching your unboxing and seeing how well-designed the edition is, it may have moved up on my wishlist now haha...
Both editions seem great and make me excited, in very different ways, for the future of 4k at Criterion. Personally I'm hoping for more Powell & Pressburger films to get the upgrade, since The Red Shoes was so magnificent in 4k. I'm also really looking forward to the Three Colors Trilogy 4k set that was just announced, even though I bought the blu-ray box set earlier this year and can't believe I'll already be replacing it! I'm curious to hear if there's any other titles you're hopeful to get a Criterion 4k announcement about in the future...
As always, great video and hope you have a great rest of your week!
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 to you as well, Leonora! I’m so happy to have the Malcolm X and Wall-E 4K editions in the collection and they both have much to offer in supplemental material. I too was 50/50 on picking up Wall-E this month but very glad I did. Looking forward to going through these and sharing thoughts soon.
Enjoy the holiday!
Amazing items that criterion has done :)
I agree that these are two amazing titles for sure. Can’t wait to share thoughts on them both.
Nice pickups James. That Wall-E criterion looks cool
Yes, Wall-E 4K is a cool looking release and I’m very glad I decided to go for it!
Happy Thanksgiving, James!! Hope it's a great one. Great reviews!!
Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Pocketmego! Glad you enjoy the reviews!
Will watch this when I get a chance! Just subbed to your channel! From ken mid level media. I’ve seen you in the monthly streams a couple times. You seem like a cool guy and nice. So I’ll see what your all about. And watch the videos I’m interested in. Really wanted to see what was inside both of these from movies and sues channel cuz they look like big cases. I got wall e steelbook from Best Buy. I believe the outside is a bit damaged but inside is pretty messed up. Never seen Malcolm x. Always wanted too. So thanks for sharing! Nice! Love that booklet. My only criterion so far is raging bull. Haven’t watched yet or the features but noticed there’s a ton of features just by playing them. I’ll grab both of these at some point. Support Disney and stuff. Very beautiful inside both movies and 3 discs wow. Probably one for special features. Ton of features for Wall e damn
Hello, Vince! Welcome to the channel, and hope you enjoy the stream when you have a chance to watch it. Malcolm X is one of Spike Lee’s best films and Denzel Washington’s performance in the film is great.
@@20thand21stMovies thanks! Will do!
I ordered the Wall-E for 50% off because I am paranoid that this will somehow go out of print with Disney at the helm. I just got/watched Bamboozled last week, and as with every joint, hard to deal with, but important and loved it. I might swipe up Malcom X (last time , for me, seen on LaserDisc) before the end of the month because I have a problem haha $$$$
Ha ha, I understand the problem you speak of 😂. Malcolm X 4K is definitely worth it. Great film from Spike Lee and the new edition has some nice supplements. Happy Thanksgiving!
Great items
Thanks. Looking forward to diving into them.
with WALL-E being added to the Criterion Collection imagine the endless possibilities of Disney movies that should be on there
THEY SERIOUSLY NEED TO ADD the original Big Five Disney films: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Dumbo, Bambi, Pinocchio and Fantasia
what do u think?
No.
Azia, with the addition of Wall-E to the collection it will be interesting to see if this a one off or the beginning of more Disney/Pixar titles from Criterion. We shall see.
@@st_orlie ???
I’m waiting for my Malcolm X 4K to get delivered. Are the boxes for these two movies normal in size? They look thicker than most digipaks.
Hello, Steve! I believe these are a little thicker than some other digipacks due to having 3 discs. Nice package for both and a long list of on disc supplementary content. Hope you enjoy your copy when it arrives!
@@20thand21stMovies thank you. I may have an update in my final Criterion Haul that will be filmed tonight.
Love it. Thank me later -> 'PromoSM'!!
Merry Christmas!
