  • About this song from ‘Let’s Go To Hell (Scattered Memories of the Butthole Surfers)’ by James Burns (2015, Cheap Drugs):
It’s a true crime that this song has never seen the light of day. “Valuable Charcoal” is a hauntingly beautiful song in which Gibby recounts the details of a summer romance he experienced as a young boy, while on vacation in Cape Cod with his family. He has recounted the story several times over the years in various interviews, as well. It is hard to know why this song never made it to the LP, though one reason may be that the initial ‘Oklahoma!’ sessions, of which this song seems to be a part, where reportedly regarded as a failure by the band. They reportedly went back and rerecorded (and/or remixed) a bunch of songs for the LP at a different studio. Whether this song was just forgotten about on a tape of the old sessions; or whether it was actually deemed unworthy is unknown, but it was regrettably shelved and never revisited. To me, this should have replaced “TV Star.”
