If I had to pick one, I prefer the long version cause it has more of a Slipknot vibe, like it sounds more dark and tortured/depressed
The extended version is more in keeping with how slipknot ended their first two albums.
I have a deep connection with this song, so happy you reacted to both versions 😁 I like both for different reasons. The short version is a perfect period on the end of the album, like you said. The long version is great to just get lost in and go on a journey through. In 2010 when I was 15 and having surgery to have my Thyroid removed because it was cancerous, I was listening to the extended version as I went under. Unsure if I’d make it out the other side, I wanted it to be the last thing I heard. Gotta take a pill the rest of my life, but I’m almost 12 years cancer free 🙏 Around the same time I made a mash-up / remix sampling both versions and “Feel Good Inc” by Gorillaz. Never ended up uploading it, so I wonder if I still have the project files on an old laptop. Also around the same time I recorded an experimental cover of it that should still be on my channel. It’s very interesting how it isn’t just “extended” but the mix is also different; with new instruments and effects laid over the same parts and other effects striped away. I’ve always wanted to make a “Mega-Mix” combing the best parts of both versions. Hopefully some day, if I can get a good editing computer again 🤞 and although I only saw their tail, Mocha seems like a really sweet kitty 😸

I knew you'd love the original. To be honest with you, I've heard the extended version, but I completely forgot about it. It doesn't do much for me compared with the O.G.
The extended is the original. The short version on the album is an edited version.
If I recall the story correctly, the first few weeks when they were in the mansion nobody wanted to work on music or even be in the same room with eachother cause the band was falling apart. So Clown eventually threw his hands up and started working on this on his own as a form of catharsis, and then brought Corey in on it later, and then the full band.
So this is really one of Clowns babies and you can sure tell.
As for how the split happened it was originally the longer piece but then they cut it down to the 3 minute version. Not exactly sure why, maybe time constraignts, maybe they didn't want to do the Iowa thing again and have a 10+ min track on the end, maybe creative vision. Only the guys would know. Me personally I prefer the cut down version, it's more cohesive. But I do really love the vibe of the extended pieces. I almost wish they became a seperate song. Either way I'm glad they did eventually give us the full cut cause I love this side of Slipknot. This is of course coming from someone who loved My Pain
It's sad they didn't continue the 9+ minute long song tradition, all of their albums should've had one.
@@sonder152 yeah it's kinda like Metallica how they always had an instrumental up until the black album. At least they've kept the tradition of every record having an intro track. Idk, Clowns been saying things like the new record is the antithesis of what they are as a band. Maybe the last track will be an epic 10 minute progression like the good old days

Honestly, both versions have their strengths but simple is kinda better so the OG album version is kinda better whereas the longer version has like so much going on and feels like filler rather than an end even though there are bits of it I really like

Yes, this definitely has Clown's fingerprints all over it...I'm also fairly sure that Clown is playing the main keyboard part and most likely the drum parts as well (along with that vocal part at the start of the extended version)...

I dont know what it is about the shorter version and the lyrics "that space in my mind. Is that space you call mine" but it feels like its undoing the top to a bottle of emotions thats been sealed for way too long

The song is about two personalities living in one same person. Even though both personalities hate each other, they need themselves to exist. I like the longer one because Shawn is one voice and Corey is another.

The original album version is definitely more balanced. The extended one is like a little bit of curiosity or something, but not something made to be like a sing along or anything like that.

Well, this was a sonic salad! So much going on. There was a part that sounded like they went out to the desert, on acid or other mind altering drug, and recorded what happened. Very interesting. I have no tripping experience, btw. Lol! Loved seeing Mocha! Mocha's tail, anyway. Is Mocha a girl or boy? I think I assumed once. Sorry Mocha. : )
