  • Eleven years ago, Pat was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting progressive multiple sclerosis. After losing his ability to walk he had to make some major adjustments like giving up golf and cycling and using a wheelchair. Pat has replaced the things he’s lost with curiosity about himself and people and how we think and see the world, giving him a healthier, more grounded perspective on life and its importance. Pat is still working and may have lost some mobility but has been compensated generously with insight and the time to share it with those who are open to different perspectives. He is both a consultant and professional speaker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Acceptance, for me, was the hardest part. I spent wasted years fighting my condition instead of working with it. Once that lightbulb moment hit me it was like a heavy burden had been lifted. I am content in living my life as it is now and no longer wish for a past that wasn't half as fulfilling. Thank you for putting it far better than I ever could.
A Very Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Pat, Thanks for a brilliant, honest, insightful and inspirational talk. You have a rare gift. There are many of us on this earth who have stopped growing long before we depart it, and there you are -still growing , still curious, still learning, still truly healthy. Well done for taking the time to share this

Pat, I really value the personal insights, struggles and successes you shared in this TEDx talk. I saw a statistic the other day that stated 80% of New Year Resolutions fail by early February (I have to confess that I usually get to the end of February! ) This year I intend to draw on your thinking differently approach to life to help me continually improve. Thanks for sharing.

Maith an fear - bravo Pat. Everything in perspective in a compelling message that everyone should hear. You're a tonic - an island of inspiration and excellence in a world where mediocrity seems the norm.

2:46 "Positivity is really important to my ability to socialize, to meet people, to share the insights I have. And we all need relationships and conversation to allow us to clear our minds, to allow us to think clearly. If you don't see how your words land on others and you don't feel their body language coming back to you, you don't really know how your thoughts are being seen. You don't get a chance to clear your mind. And this is something that is really important. [Othewise] you can't have meaningful conversations, you can't really know yourself."

5:30 Talks about the drunk whose problem was going back and forth between the ditches and not getting on down the road. "And the ditches for me were that (1) I felt if I accepted MS, I might become depressed, I'd fall into victimhood, and it would be "Why me?" And (2) the other "ditch" was the fear that if I fought this really really hard, I might fail and I'd end up on the ditch over here. But I had to fight..."

Good comment! : "That's a wise man. It's tragic autologous and umbilical cord stem cells aren't widely available for those with MS and other serious conditions despite being safe and relatively easy to procure."

Please check out Dr. Terry Wahls research on CZcams / her book. She’s a doctor with MS and put it into remission
