Thrilled that you are filming this technique. After almost 60 years of sewing I'm glad to learn something new.
That’s awesome! I’m glad i had something to teach. I’m sure you could teach me plenty!
OMG- I sewed the most sharp looking collar and stand with your expert technique. Thank you for making these videos. You are a great instructor
Hey nice job!!! Glad I could be there with you! 😉
So thankful that I found this video and found you! This is the only way I do my collars now and they come out perfect every time! Thank you very much. I also do my yokes like you do now. I was also thankful that this was not a live sew a long where there were questions and answers.🤪
Hopefully more tutorials to come. 🙂
Thank you SO MUCH for doing tutorial without friggin material full of bold print...and for talking through the tutorial. ❤
My pleasure! It’s so hard to find fabric that works well on camera. Sometimes I fall short! But I’m glad this one worked for you. Cheers!
So glad I found you, I love the way you did this collar! I will no longer be afraid of shirts 😀, and I love that after 50 plus years of sewing I’m still learning better ways to do things. Made my day 👍😊💐
Nice! I’m still learning too. I have 2 sleeve placket videos coming today too! All the shirt details! 🙌
I agree!! I've been sewing for 40 years but collars and sleeves still make me cringe. This video was SOOOO much more helpful than Butterick's brief and non-helpful instructions! Thank you so much! :) Now for those stupid sleeves and not getting tucks when sewing them in!?! And, when I go by my measurements on the pattern, the garment is waaaay too big...like, falling off my shoulders. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to determine pattern size correctly. And I'm hourglass shaped so they should work pretty well for me, right? Any tips on that? I will search this channel... ;)
Wow Saremy 😍 This is my next challenge. What a terrific tutorial! Beautiful clean finish. Love that chambray and the contrasting fabric together. So cute! Thanks much!
Thanks Kim! You got this! Cut a few to practice on!
@@SewSewLive that's a great idea! Thanks
You are a great teacher.
Wow. Thank you. That means a lot!
Cannot resist telling you that your hair is so gorgeous!
Thank you. That’s nice of you. 🙂
SUPERB !!! I was stumped by my pattern's printed instructions for an almost identical shirt collar, but your tutorial in video form demystified it completely, and I really like your method of sewing up the whole collar first before attaching to the short body, as the pattern's approach of doing it piece by piece attached to the shirt first meant that any mistakes on the shirt body could effectively trash the whole front and/or back pieces....Yikes !!! With your method, if I make a mistake on any of the collar pieces, I have much less to lose and more likely to have enough material to redo the collar pieces 😃 Thank you sooo (sew ??) much !!! have a great day.
That's a great way to think about it! Modular sewing is a great preserver of your project.
' I was stumped by my pattern's printed instructions ...'. Me too and I made a horrible mess as I just didn't understand anything. Mind you, it didn't help that I missed some of markings.
Best collar tutorial I have seen. Thank you!
Well that’s awesome! Thanks!
Thank you - excellent tutorial of a complicated process. Very grateful
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
I never thought to start in the center and sew to the end when attaching the collar to the stand. It makes so much sense!
Oh I’m so glad I had something you found useful! Thanks for watching Molly!
Thank you for helping me be the boss of my collar stand!!!!
Yess! Nice job!
I attempted a collar constructed on a simplicity pattern. After 2 days and still unclear, I am here. Ripped off attempted collar, headed to fabric store this afternoon for some extra fabric and fusing. Will follow video instructions step by step. Everything was clear, including understitching! Thank you Sew Sew
Good luck! You got this. If the pieces are similar, the steps will work.
29:40 ~ “It’s good to get things done …. have something you can use.”
I love that you stated this; as crafters/perfectionists we can get carried away with the itty bitty little things and forget about the big picture.
Right? How do we know if it’s good or bad if it’s not finished? There’s always something to improve and there’s always something to love. Thanks for the comment! Happy sewing!
Who else is here after fighting a collar all night? ☺️
Ack!! I hope you prevailed in the end. I’ve certainly been there!!
@@SewSewLive I'm taking it off, recutting the pieces, and trying again today! 💪 The instructions on the pattern I used made no sense so I'm trying your method for sure. Thank you again.
Gosh I’ve been there. Good job persevering and knowing when to re-cut!! May you prevail 🏆
Me!! I’ve tried following the directions. They make no sense. I’m doing a simplicity pattern. Ugh.
You got this! If the pieces are similar, you can use the same steps. Cutting down the seam allowance to 1/4” really helps too.
Excellent video. I like your method of teaching and making it seem so easy. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I could listen to you sew and teach for hours. Thank you!
Wow. Thanks! I’m so glad my method works for you! 😊
Thank you. Much better and far more thorough than the instructions that came with my pattern.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for doing this post, i feel i can now go ahead and confidently move on in my current project.
Wonderful! You got this!
THANK YOU! Excellent demonstration! I am actually looking forward to doing this myself. Good Work!
I love to hear that! I hope it goes well!
Thank you very much for this painless and easy way to sew the collar and collar stand on this aloha shirt!! I always had a hard time sewing the yoke and collar on aloha shirts but now I'm not afraid to sew more! Mahalo plenty from Hawaii!
My pleasure! I’m glad fit was useful! You might find this one more appropriate for Aloha Shirts if that’s what you’re mostly sewing: How to Sew a Camp Shirt Collar or collar without back neck facing or collar stand

Glad I found your video, I was racking my brains out❤
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much everyone else is way of sewing a collar it was not very beginner user ready the way you did it was a lot easier thank you so much
I’m glad to hear that! Happy sewing. And good luck!
I LOVE this method. I just tried it on my 4th Archer and it turned out the best yet. Still not perfect but that will come with time. THANK YOU for so generously sharing your expertise .
Well that’s awesome to hear! Congrats on your new Archer! I just finished one too!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was trying to sew a collar this weekend and made so many mistakes because I didn’t understand the pattern directions. I’m going to give it another try this week.
Nice! I’m so glad I gave you something new to try. Good luck! If you’re using your same pieces as before, make sure you remove all the threads and press the pieces as well as possible. Give yourself a nice clean start the best you can if you have to use pieces that have been sewn once or twice.
Really clear instructions. You have demystified sewing a collar with a collar stand. It’s taken me a while to understand how to do it but your excellent close up video was appreciated. Thanks
Your welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for posting this! I was just stuck on a collar and ready to give up until I found this video!
Nice job persevering!!
Great lesson. After ripping a collar stand off twice, getting this detailed lesson is a big help. Back to the salt mines I go...
Hahaha! Oh nooo 😂 I have felt the same way so many times about something! Salt mines indeed. Good luck!
this is the best l have seen so far! thank u soooo much!
Absolutely!
So much less nerve-wracking than other methods I’ve tried.
🙌🏼
Thank you so much! I use your method and have had good success. Nice collars every time.
Wonderful!
GREAT TUTORIAL~~~ THANK YOU!!
Glad it was helpful! Happy sewing!
Thank you so much! ❤
This is a masterclass on collars. I still make mistakes because I'm such a stubborn student and I keep forgetting your assertive instructions. 😂
I’m so stubborn too!!! I can’t believe I sound like a school marm now! 😂
Excellent tutorial. It made absolute sense and was far more informative than others I have watched. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the kind comment.
You are an amazing teacher!!! I'm working on the Aila Blouse by Fibre Mood and I find their instructions quite unclear, especially when you've never done a collar with collar stand before. So glad I found your video! I love that you don't speed up the video so I really get every step of the way. Thank you!! Now I feel really confident attaching my collar:)
You are so welcome! Good luck!
Thank you for such a thorough tutorial! I’ve only sewn one collar but with these tips I think it will be less of a challenge next time. Thanks again!
You got this! It’s definitely tricky but the more you do the easier it gets.
OMGoodness! I'm so happy I found this tutorial. I'm new to sewing and have never sewn a collar stand. I feel so empowered now and confident that it's going to go easier.
Nice! I’m so glad to hear it!
Thank U very much. I appreciate your conversational method of taking your time, repeating yourself if necessary, and showing empathy for the beginner! : )
I’m glad you found it helpful! I know many like a very short edited video but so much is missing from those sometimes (and I like short videos too 😅 I’m so impatient!). I’m trying to get better at explaining things-for any level-but especially a beginner. I’m not so good at that quite yet. 🙂
You are great, you are showing us professional finish. Appreciate 🙏
Thank you. Happy sewing!
This is exactly what I needed 😊
Awesome!
A great tutorial, so glad I came across you. Now subscribed. Thank you so much!
Thanks for subscribing!
After years of not sewing, I’ve decided to start making my own clothes, my first project happens to be a sleeveless blouse and I was stuck on the collar and collar band. You have explained this in a simple and clear manner. Thank you!
Wonderful! Welcome back to sewing!
Absolutely fantastic.
Glad you found it useful!
This is so helpful, and thank you for the reminder to wrap it up and move to the next project. The enemy of good is better!
Absolutely!!
Excellent demo…. Thank You 🧵 🪡 💝
I’m glad it was helpful!
Great tutorial. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
omg! you even matched the vertical stripes! you are a god!
I don’t remember pattern matching so I just got lucky 😅 Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for this excellent video, Saremy. I've been making shirts for myself for several years now following instructions for sewing those tricky collars from various in-person and online courses. Your instructions are probably the most complete and practical. They combine the best of what I learned from other courses and also address a number of challenges that have frustrated me.
Fantastic! So great to hear!
Nice collar done..
🙌🏼 well done!
Thank you! This approach helped me so much and removed the frustration from attaching collars. Love the approach to start with the inside first. And a great tip to start the edge stitch from the center rather than having backstitching at the most visible spot.
Nice! I’m glad it works for you. And I love meeting another who likes to hide the backstitch 🤓
Going to be up extra early to do my collar before I go to work ,lots of new techniques in your video thank you so much
Ooh! Looks like we’re having coffee together. I like it!
This is a really great video! I have sewing experience but have never done a collar with a collar stand. I was having trouble fitting the collar stand to the collar. I was getting buckling because the stand seemed longer than the collar. Using a narrower seam and starting from the middle helped. (I'm making a raincoat using dry oilskin with very little give.)
Oh yes! Those fabrics with no give can be really tricky! Good luck!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for this informative and clearly explained video. I was working with a sewing pattern with directions that were pretty lacking, and tried to use my Reader's Digest COMPLETE GUIDE TO SEWING to make up for it. But even that usually helpful source was difficult to follow when it came to the task of a stand-up collar. I appreciate the guidance!
Nice! That’s a great book I’m flattered I could be more helpful.
Excellent! Well thought-out camera angle, audio is perfect, and your narrative is very, very helpful. Thank you!
😊I’m so glad it works for you!
Am about to sew my first collar and this video has been super helpful. Imagine I will re watch several times whilst sewing! Thank you so much 💛
Good luck! You got this!
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial! My Cheyenne tunic turned out sooo much better than the previous one! I’m new to your live stream and I love learning new tips and tricks for sewing. Yours are the best!
Aw that’s lovely to hear! I have a Cheyenne Tunic and love it! It’s a great pattern.
Thank you for sharing your tips!
My pleasure!
Beautiful job! Thank you for showing us how you do it ❤️❤️❤️
You are so welcome!
And oh my gosh, you matched the print between the stand and the collar. I like this way of going from inside to out. I’ll certainly try it when I get off my backside and actually make this shirt. 🙄
I didn’t even notice! It was completely lucky!
Thanks so much for the video I find it far easier to do collar and collar stands this way than the way I was taught.
Greetings from Tatum in Sunny South Africa
Hi Tatum! I’m glad this works for you! We all have the methods that speak to us. It’s nice when we can find what it is 😀 Hello from sunny California!
I can't wait to try this method!!!! Thanks for the tut
Hope you like it!
Oops! I see you mentioned the Archer button up…i will use that if I have it for practice. Many thanks again 😅
For women’s I’ve used the Archer. The one you mentioned is a favorite in my sewing community too. I’m sure it’ll be great!
What a perfect tutorial. Thank you so much. Helped me skip about six steps in the patten instructions. 🥳
Woot!! 🙌🏼 I’m so glad it helped!
Thank you so much for your excellent videos!
My pleasure!
Nice Tutorial, Very Helpful!!
That’s great!
This is such a great video. It is so clear and easy to follow - unlike the pattern instructions which were incredibly confusing that I made a real mess of it. Thank you, from a beginner sewer.
I’m really glad it helped! Thankfully the pattern pieces all usually sew the same across all patterns.
@@SewSewLive What I'm beginning to realise is that there are differents methods for all parts of construction, so hopefully I can now choose to use this method no matter what the pattern suggests. As a beginner I thought I just had to follow the pattern instructions meticulously, now I realise I have choices!
You absolutely have choices! I very rarely use the instructions. There’s many ways to sew most steps. Happy sewing!
I cannot even tell you how this video rescued my first button down shirt project! I’m a new sewist and proooobably a bit ambitious 🤣😩
But this is brilliant! You rock! Instant follow. ✊🏼💪🏼
Aw I’m so glad to hear it! When I’m new at something My eyes are often bigger than my stomach too 😉 I live stream sewing three days a week and it’s a great group of sewing peeps at all different levels. You’re welcome to come. (11 am Pacific Wed, Thu and Sat). And congrats!
@@SewSewLive I definitely will!
Need to watch this more than once but it makes me wonder how anyone goes from reading a pattern instructions to successfully constructing the collar and stands without additional instruction, such as your excellent video!
Well thanks! Glad it was helpful!
This video is perfect. Thanks for the demo! Your tips as you sew are excellent and worth noting. You’re a great instructor!
Well thank you! That makes me feel very good!
Thank you - this video was excellent. I haven’t put a collar on in yrs. This was so very helpful!
Oh nice!! Glad it could help!
This is the hardest thing for me....I always mess it up. The patterns don't always help and can be so confusing. Great video.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. This video has saved many of my garments.
That’s wonderful to hear. 🙂
thanks great tutorial, i thought this project was over when I read the pattern instructions !? could not figure it out... so happy to have finished my first sewing project. Your words of encouragement about letting go of wanting it to be perfect and just get the job done really worked for me !!
Congrats! That’s a huge accomplishment! Nicely done. 😊
This tutorial worked for me! I been sewing shirts for a few years. (Tribal Regalia)
I have always been intimidated by the collar part so I would make them with out. This tutorial helped me so much today. My shirt turned out nice and I am no longer afraid of this process. Lol
Thank you so much!!
Yay! So glad to hear! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@SewSewLive also like to mention that I watched and tried to follow a few other videos. I failed lol
Yours was the first that I could actually follow and understand. So thank you again.
Just finished my very first collar! Thanks for your help.
Oh my gosh that’s amazing! They’re so hard. Good job!!
Thanks for this! I didn’t trim my seam allowance because my flannel fabric was fraying SO much! it still turned out great. 🌺
Glad it helped! And congrats on your collar!
So happy I found this channel. I've been stuck with a blouse I couldn't finish and now I think I may actually get it done (after I watch the video a second time of course)
Woot! I’m glad to hear that. Good luck. You got this!!
Successfully got my collar stand in after failing my first 3 attempts with the pattern makers instructions. Thank you so much for such detailed instructions and visually easy to follow along with! Subscribing for future help!
Nice! Glad it helped Tiffany! Thanks for subscribing ☺️
Good teaching I enjoyed ❤
Wow thanks! I’m so glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching Angela!
Wonderful work ma'am
😀
Excellent video!
🙌🏼 Thanks for watching!
I love your class. Its just perfect. Tankyou
You're so welcome!
I am 78.From Buenos Aires. I learn how to make shirt when I was may e 12. With Josefina Lucente. I remember it like it was today.
Thank you soo much for showing us! ❤❤😊
My pleasure 😊
That you so much for a clear, easy to follow tutorial. Really helped me a lot!
Wonderful! Thanks for the comment.
Thank you thank you thank you!! I’m sewing my first ever man’s shirt from a Big 4 pattern and the instructions are dire. You have saved me from an absolute pickle!! 💜💜
Nice! Glad it was helpful!
Loved this!
Nice!
Excellent step-by-step, how-to video. I have a 1/2 made shirt in my ufo pile, which I have always intened to finish. It has now moved to top of my autumn sewing goals. After watching this, I feel I can get it done and start wearing it.
You can finish it!!
I agree you are an amazing teacher. I tried to make a shirt years ago and my collar was such a failure. This makes me want to try again.
Thank you Nancy. I hope you do give it a try! If you like these kids of shirts you’d have something new to sew. I love making them!
Thanks very helpful to see this technique. It worked a lot better than sewing on the stand then the collar!
Excellent! I agree. You just gotta find the method that works for you.
You are fabulous!
I’m glad it was helpful!!
Wow, this is a fantastic tutorial! I'm making McCalls 6696 and it has a lot of slip stitching; I wish I'd seen your video beforehand. I especially love the very sage advice about just getting things done and considering it good practice rather than giving up because something isn't perfect. I am excited to watch your other videos - thank you so much.
That’s lovely to hear Gemz! Happy to have you here ☺️
Thanks, very helpful!
Awesome!! So glad it was helpful!
Another fabulous tutorial! You have wonderful teaching skills
Thank you! I’m always trying to make them better.
Wow! Thank you for this technique. Just used it on a blouse pattern and it came out beautifully 💕👍
Wonderful! Hey that’s so cool!
Excellent tutorial. I learned so much and enjoy your techniques. Thank you very much.
Wonderful!
Thanks for this tutorial! Going to try this tonight -- worked from the outside in on my first Archer and had a terrible time trying to catch the inside of the collar stand when I was finishing. I'm sure this will go much more smoothly!
Absolutely! I know exactly what you mean! I don’t like guessing with that method good luck!!
This has been really tricky for me ,I am doing a history garment so the collar stand is different but ,you gave me some really great tips and will try first on my mock up .Thank you
Oh good luck!! I hope you figure it out. 😊
Thank you so much for this excellent and detailed tutorial! I could clearly see everything you spoke about. I will practice this technique going forward.
That’s great to hear Sharon! I’m so glad it helped! I have other How To’s in this playlist: czcams.com/play/PLOioHSQZ8vdw3GjLjGWFS2BSCMDXNqMPn.html
