  • The life & death of one of Nintendo's most mysterious Wii projects and how a storm of alleged discrimination and mismanagement tore Nintendo Software Technology apart, as told by the people who worked there.
For the record, I did reach out to Nintendo's Japanese staff who these allegations were directed at to give them an opportunity to tell their side of the story. Only one replied, declining to comment. We have not accused NST of "racism/nationalism", only reported allegations of such. Please distinguish between the two; they are very different.
Stay tuned for more revelations, including looks at Rayman 4 & an unreleased Kid Icarus game.

Man, this video really made me angry.
    1. Nintendo treats their own western studio like a shovelware dev.
    2. A new Nintendo IP is cancelled.
    3. Nintendo tried to turn it to a casual game.
There's nothing to be happy about here.

Chris vs The World The game looked pretty meh to me anyways. Swinging around your wee remote hoping not to hit anyone or anything to nearby. Didn't look like my cup of tea.

KocoBlitz I believe that it needed work but it's just another example of Nintendo getting more and more insular about the west after the Gamecube. The first game they showed off for the Wii was Disaster: Day of Crisis. It was a game that took place in America and it never came out over here. Devil's Third, another game taking place in the US has gone cold in the west. And those two games weren't even developed by western devs. Seeing what could have been with Hammer only makes me angrier about the way Nintendo has changed for the worse when it comes to the west. They even treat their own international studios like second class citizens.

Yes, me too.... I was so hyped for the Wii after this game, Zelda, Red Steel and Disaster where showed at E3 06... How could Nintendo missread their fanbade so much and turn everything into a shitty Wii XY game???!!! Did you read this Nintendo? We was your f***ing audience when Wii was announced and we stand in lines in front of the shops around the world to buy this thing at day 1!! Not the casual crowd!! How could you behave like this to your fans and your developers?!! I hope you've learnt your lessons and start to cater again to the western people to! And i hope you take your younger employees seriously after the Splatoon success!

Retro Studios seems to be the only company they truly trust, and they do all the cozy, safe franchise work for them. Stuff that's already established, stuff they've tailor-made to be non-offensive and casual to a wide audience (I'd even count Metroid in the mix at this point, despite its official T game rating.)
Nintendo might not be a nationalist company, but it doesn't seem to respect when a Western company wants to do something Western-style for a Western audience on their system, it sounds like.

The game looked great, it just needed some little gameplay tweaks:
-Rid of the IR pointer, just attack in the direction you're facing.
-Add normal attacks performed with A and B buttons, add special attacks performed by swinging and slamming down the controller.
-Add a power bar splitted in 4 or 5 sections to fill with normal attacks, and use the power to perform special attacks, a super attack (tornado?) or... ta-dan! a laser beam attack from the left hand of the character, the only move you can do with the IR.
-Add environmental obstacles and interacion (flaming gaps to jump at right time, swinging wires from lightposts, breakable display windows), etc.
-Add power-ups and some new weapons (like an electrical whip you can swing).
And that's it, the game could have been incredibly fun to play.

For those curious as to why this did not happen to Retro Studios, Nintendo may not be the largest video game developer, but they still have a lot of software development teams. The people overseeing Retro were not the same one overseeing Nintendo Software Technologies. Moreover, Retro were working on established properties the way Japanese men had suggested them to. All their attempts prior to create new titles or put their own spins on existing ones had been shot down, including their idea to make Metroid a third person shooter.
My own opinion is that management and development were both right. If the environment was bleaker and less interactive than that, then those changes seen were positives, but in a live time no breaks action title, making control of the character fun should be first priority. No one should know that better than Nintendo, who have Super Mario 64 to their name. Put Mario on a flat, barren field and one can still amuse themselves for a little while just moving him around. That game completely changed how people approached third person 3D games, but it was clear Nintendo didn't learn basic lessons from their own game considering Retro Studios themselves had to remind them to make sure the Wii, two "generations" later, came with a control stick!

I wished the original vision could have been a mix of both motion controls and or regular inputs , or just have two control options for motion controls and or standard controls. That way they could have had a good blend of gameplay with combat with regular controls and maybe even more interaction with the environment with motion controls. It's just a thought but the Wii Crash version of it just looked like another throw away game in Wii Play or something. Anyway great video.

    @Toadsanime Před 9 lety +6

Wow man, a great piece, totally satisfied with that after having looked forward to hearing about it for so long. Cheers for doing this.
It's interesting to hear that it actually got a 'proper' title (one that's probably not as good as its codename, either) and, unsurprisingly, that the biggest issue was a disconnect from Nintendo execs and the developers. I'm surprised it was actually still in development long after reports said it had been binned, though.
Like, 'imagine swinging the controls to constantly smash and kills enemies, it was just not fun.' Really? Like, really? That's what the entire hack-and-slash genre is, and the footage I've seen here still interests me. Looks like Nintendo were being Nintendo and just simply didn't get it. Hack and slashes sell, but they seemed to have a problem with the core concept of that genre. Their solution was to change the graphics to a casual-friendly palette, for Christ's sake.
'You wouldn't understand because you're not Japanese' is such a typical, thick Nintendo approach. The Japanese headquarters' grasp over their international counterparts is the reason for their flawed PR, marketing and growing Western disconnect. I suppose I hadn't really considered that this too was the downfall of Project H.A.M.M.E.R.

Ryan Brown Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. As for whether or not it was fun, I think we have only been exposed to a very small part of what was finished and that has limited our perception. For years, I thought it looked fun too. Most of the original game was already done, so imagine that same, relatively basic combat for however-many-hours the story mode would have been. We saw that one demo in isolation, but perhaps it really didn't hold up over a longer stretch of time.

Great job investigating this Tamaki, it was really interesting getting to know what happened to this game!
Although I would inicially agree that it doesn't look that much fun, I think they might have taken the wrong approach at making it fun. In my opinion, seeing the game focused on the hammer, they could have tried making an hammer that transformed and changed into different shapes with different abilities, that would let it interact more with the environment and produce more of an action-adventure feel, instead of an hack-n-slash one!? o.0'
Then again, when you have Nintendo execs f*ckin' with your project left and right, and refusing to hear your ideas, that might not be that easy after all...
I find it funny when they use - "imagine swinging the controls to constantly smash and kills enemies, it was just not fun" - as an explanation to why it wasn't fun. Have you seen how Bowser plays in Skylanders SuperChargers... yeah... ~_~'
Well, guess I will keep waiting for Nintendo to eventually make another steam punk sci-fi title... or revive Mach Rider... ah, forget it, who am I kidding... ~_~'

I think that, had NoA known about the way that these members have been treated by certain members of the Japanese crew, someone would have said something. There's also ALWAYS two sides to a story, so you can't go strictly on one side of things without hearing the other. Either way, I was really excited for Project HAMMER and it's one of the reasons I bought a Wii back in the day. Sadly, new IPs like this are desperately needed on Nintendo systems.

Man, take out the names and this sounds like something out of Sega's history, not Nintendo's. What the hell happened here? Nintendo usually lets developers do whatever they want with a project (within reason) if interviews are to be believed. Project Hammer and Waverace are both casualties of this mess, I'm sure there are many more.
Two questions: 1) The Japanese executive you mention in the description, you can't give a name right? It's probably a safe assumption that you would have if you could, huh? and 2) What was the character's name, I couldn't really hear through your accent. M.O. 9 is what I thought I heard.

The idea of using the Wii-Remote to swing a giant hammer sounded pretty badass and it gave me hope that the Wii wouldn't exclusively cater to a young audience. It's a shame that its development was handled so poorly.

Wait, did something like this happen to the upcoming 3DS game Metroid Prime Federation Force? The art style in that game does not appeal to the west at all. If it had the art style of Metroid Prime or Prime Hunters it would be a totally different story but it looks like "someone" said the big head cartoon look was the way to go and I know it did not grab me at all and I know many others who feel the same. If true you would think lessons would have been learned from Project Hammer. Great video!

  • @TheBlueB0mber

This is what happens when you try to build a game based solely on a "gimmick". Bottom line is no one wants to spend all day swinging a wii-mote thru the air. If you use the "gimmicky" controls to actually enhance the game play it would be different...but this was not the case here. The core mechanics of this game were obviously horrid.

  • @cowfish13
    @cowfish13 Před 9 lety +1

It sounds like the Japanese execs were trying to fix the game like it was a Mario game. Maybe that was their solution for Mario vs Donkey Kong. However, a good number of Nintendo games had character focused mechanics, like Metroid.
Of course, the real answer is you need both but you decent character mechanics before you start working on the enviroment. Otherwise, you're just pushing the cart before the horse.

Honestly I have to agree, it doesn't look like it was a very fun game. It looks you just waggle the Wiimote to beat up enemies with zero strategy and that's it. Maybe if they tried on Wii U and made it a proper beat-em-up a-la Bayonetta or Metal Gear Rising, there could be some potential for fun. Discrimination aside, I think the higher ups could see that at it's core, it just wasn't a very good game.

It would've been great to finally have a mature Nintendo game made by Nintendo. And no, before anyone says anything, Bayonetta 2 was brought back to life by Nintendo and was a Wii U exclusive but it was not made by Nintendo.
I really hope someday Nintendo goes to the route of Mature games just a few times. As a first party developer (in my opinion at least) they need games for all audiences. Just family friendly content won't due.
