Cordless Impact Driver Evaluation Criteria
For our Best Cordless Impact Driver Head-To-Head test we tried to develop tests that focus on productivity and performance that relate to PRO users in the field.
We did not consider run-time. We feel that most of the major tool brands that are offering full-size impact drivers are using good lithium-ion battery packs along with brushless motors. In most situations, these tools will run long enough for the average worker to complete his or her work in a workday. Furthermore, if the user owns two or more battery packs, it’s extremely unlikely they will drain one battery before the second one is charged and ready to work.

What about HP brushless RYOBI if u run it with the 9amp batterys it eats DeWalt and Makita I've test it at work cause my boys at work are Makita and DeWalts but only if u use the 9amps on the HP line
Phenomenal video. We of course have some torque testing opinions, but it's obviously not the #1 consideration on these tools anyways. Fantastic work

Using the urethane instead of wood is such a great decision, and makes for a very scientific test. Great job!
As objective as your testing is, it really only tells half of the story. I do own the Gen4 Milwaukee and the Makita LXT and 95% of the time I grab the LXT, because it's so much nicer and smoother to use. Appreciate all the effort of the TBB team 👍
I run the 3 latest Japanese makitas and gave away the Milwaukee for the same reason. For the biggest structural screws I use the TD002 and I can leave it on the highest speed because the trigger is so precise, the Milwaukee on speed 3 is almost uncontrollable. Why would I care if it drives big lags a second or 2 faster? I find when I’m running headlocks or GRK’s or big Simpson LVL screws I’m trying to be super precise on angle and thread path cause you only get one chance to get those perfect.
I’m in a similar situation I have 2 makita impact drivers the dewalt in the test and the gen 4 Milwaukee however I tend to grab the m12 surge first then the makita if they are larger fasteners. The makita drivers are very smooth in the hand compared to the vibration from gen4 and the dewalt is very noticeable
Agreed. Also own some Dewalt, M18, M12 and various makita models.
If I'm not grabbing the M12s from my service bag it's the Makitas hands down. They make the best drills and impacts.

Hot damn, now that's some line up! In fact, the most comprehensive coverage given all the brands. Chapeau my good men and women! Another solid review. Your giving Todd at Project Farm a heck of a run for his money with those rigs : ) Loving the plastic sheeting with a homogeneous structure for comparison. No surprises on the Milwaukee coming out tops. They've appeared to have solid drills and as you say, they care about them enough to update regularly. As long as they don't turn the mechanical reverse switch into an electronic button like their Festool CXS competitor!

Thanks for posting this test! I have both Dewalt and Milwaukee. Gotta say i love the 1st setting on Dewalt because it just works so well with small fasteners. On the other hand i love my Milwaukee when i need to drive a bunch of 3 inch or bigger screws fast. Dewalts compact head also is outstanding for those hard to reach places.
Great job. I really like how you tried to eliminate the substrate inconsistency as best as possible. I’ve mentioned that issue a lot on other tool test videos that use wood to compare tools. Wood is very inconsistent and produces inaccurate results many times.

I ran milwaukees for a long time as a handyman. I did loads of work on that impact, and I love it. However, I started a finish carpentry business, and I switched over to makita. The makita impact and drill have incredible trigger control. They sound better and they have much less vibration and hand abuse.
i did the same. The Milwaukee impact drivers are too aggressive, especially with smaller screws, the trigger control is awful. Makita is simple and easy
I wore out an m18 Fuel Surge driver (7+ years, it just stopped working when you pull the trigger) and replaced it with an m12 surge. The hydraulics take care of the "big tool" problems (too much torque and noise) and now am in transition to Hilti Nuron. I don't have their impact driver, because my m12 is plenty, and relatively quiet. My first Fuel impact driver (gen 1, 3 speed without self-tapping mode) is still working fine, mostly because I stopped using it as it was too noisy and overpowered for indoor work.
@@Jacob_Dwyer That generation of Milwaukee was pretty reliable. Thats interesting about the M12 you bought, their 12v line is really good. The m18 Fuel stuff are super powered and fast, which is why it draws so many people in, but they arent built for longevity. You cant have it all i guess
I have a bunch of Milwaukee impact in 2 trucks and they’ve taken a beating - still going
I bought into the M12 line for the finish carpentry stuff. I am a DeWalt guy but their XR stuff is too aggressive for finish stuff. M12 has less power and seems to work better.
While doing a complete garage rebuild at my moms last summer, siding, trim, shelving, etc. I bought her the Skil power core 20 tools (she wanted her own tools for around the house) and I was very impressed, especially for the money. I run Milwaukee at home and on the job site but she didn't need that level of tools.
Not a single problem or was never under powered. Driving 2.5 - 3.5 screws, drilling 1/2 holes through 4×4. Cutting with both the reciprocating and circular saws. You do have to understand their "power core" system though. Even their cheaper use this battery technology, I did buy the best tool Skil offers. The reciprocating saw was 149 with saw, 4 amp battery, charger and the adapter for phone charging. Great battery life and the jump charging feature is nice.
For the DIY, even every weekend user I highly recommend the SKIL brand.
I also bought her the weed eater with quick attachment system and blower. Both was pretty impressive with the 4 amp battery.

Owned metabo hpt (hitachi/hikoki here in Australia) since 2010,I still have batteries from 2010 and 2012 still holding charge with daily use (electrician), only ever killed two drills, one the apprentice dropped it off a 2 story scissor lift, the other left in the rain over night- ive upgraded before the tools have ever died.
Ive got mates that love milwaukee but have had battery fails within 1-2 years, and drill/impact driver trigger fails within 6months of ownership (one of ours worker's drill trigger failed within the first month with light duties - Not used in dusty environments etc)
One strong thing to consider before purchase as well with these brands is the other tools they have as part of the range that utilise the same battery as that will help determine what you may require later on down the track.

As a gardener, I don't use these tools very often, I use a Bosch GDX 18V - 200, and it does everything I need!

I'm very happy with Milwaukee products, from the M12 Fuel line to the M18 Fuel line, I have the other brands like Ridgids and Dewalt, but the Milwaukee brand outlast them all. In most of my impact driving I use the M12 Fuels and the M12 drills as well, waiting to upgrade from XRP De Walt oscillating tool to the M12 Milwaukee Oscillating .

Epic review! I bought a Milwaukee Impact driver a few years back and just keep adding tools as I need to stay on their battery platform and have been pleased. I've used tools from a few of the other manufactures mentioned here and the all worked great too. As a DIY'er, I don't think you could make a bad choice from the group that you tested, just pick your price point and favorite color and pull the trigger. 🏁

Good test rob. I love the metabo hpt triple hammer and the trip hammer bolt which is the gen 2 and the rest of the multivolt gen 2 tools are already in the works and many are already out in Japan just waiting on em to hit the states.

Great test, as usual!!! I’d really like to see an impact driver test centered on small-to-medium size fasteners. It seems most tests are on large-ish fasteners which is great for certain applications, but I personally rarely use screws longer than 3” and feel many folks are likely in a similar situation.
As the hammer and spring mechanisms are wound tighter and tighter to apply more static torque, the drivers get less controllable on the most often used fasteners.
Perhaps this is why I like hydraulic impacts a lot, especially when noise is considered.

Thank you for the reviews. I’m tied into bosch and overall happy with them. The past 3 years they’ve actually looked like they are trying to compete in the North American market by expanding their offerings. Also, they do a really good job with their warranty service.

Wow, by the numbers the Milwaukee really stood out from the next. I love mine. The new lights are awesome and i use it as a flashlight all the time in dark places when it’s sitting next to me. Hate that the light goes off so quick though. Would be really cool if they added a switch like the metabo? I believe it was. I like that. Or even like 8 seconds would be nice. It goes off real quick.

Awesome tests. I just buy based on yellow tags these days. I have 3 metabo impacts and a DeWalt 887 I paid less than $130 total for in Lowes. Not bad for 4 impacts. Tens of thousands of screws later I have no issues. I do wish the Metabos had a quick change collet though. I found the 18v triple hammer to be as strong or stronger than the 36v. I thought that was interesting.
The 887 is my workhorse too. I have dropped that thing off decks, in pouring rain and mud, and that damn thing just won't die. Best $130 I ever spent.
Great video content. I own over 20 milwaukee tools. Had a previous gen impact drvr die out of the blue, lightly used. Got it swapped for a dispaly model at HD, they no longer do this.🙄 Milwaukee sucks on upholding their warranty. I bought a 2145 site light with One key, only for home use, maybe used 4 times total, it Sat in a room for maybe 6-9 months unused, I go to get it and see that from every lens screw location there were cracks all through the lens. Obviously someone in china over torqued the screws. Light was never dropped or abused still looks new. STILL under warranty they refused to replace the plastic lens at an authorized service center. They just don't give AF. This light is still 300 dollars on Acme and Home depot. The one key no longer connects to the phone also. Ive had a few milwaukee tools ive had to file the openings to get the milwaukee batteries from jamming in them. Tolerances were way too tight. I still buy some milwaukee tools but have added Dewalt, Mak, Fein, Ryobi, and Snap On battery systems a while back. I think the dewalt head size leading is significant for tight spaces.

Great video. You should do a head to head on best warranty. Ridgid warranty has become a nightmare. I had a milwaukee tool stop working and all I had to do is fill out a form online, print a free shipping label and drop it off to be shipped. I think I got it back in a 7 days.

Wow what test! I’d like to see a 12v comparison next for drill drivers and impacts. It’s a product that changed my battery platform… to M12. I was using dewalt 12v, but it’s brushless driver power settings has faded over the year of ownership.

As a pro user, and as cordless as possible since 2004,I like others have a my own algorithm .
It's based on price,freebies/promotios, sales,quantity of tool lineup, warranty ,life span,etc.
A single tool must be 3X better than my current platforms to join my tool bag.
M12 is my preferred set for weight savings,next is Makita 18,followed by m18.
M12 surge is lightweight and quiet,unfortunately 12v has poor performance for tools that rely only on circular torque.
Drills and circular saws do not have the power to cut/holewsaw plywood for cabinet installs.
So both are Makita 18v.
Omt, hackzall,impact wrench, bandsaw,caulkgun,greasegun,inspection camera,23G pinner, die grinders,ratchets,and surge will always have a place in the bag ...even at 12v.
And have added the Bosch 12 orbital sander,planer,and future orbital sander.
Because they were 3x better than the m18 sander,and the only 12v planer at the time of purchase.

I still love my Milwaukee Surge even though it delivers power a bit differently than a traditional anvi impactl. Even if some applications it wouldn't be as fast, I can use it indoors or right near a neighbor's house and it's a relaxing experience. I'll sacrifice a second or 2 per job for that alone.

I've had mine since 2016 and I wouldn't consider trading it for any of these traditional impacts even if they perform better.

It would be interesting to throw in a handful of 12V brushless models into the mix to see if/where 12V impacts drop off in real-world usage. Brushless and battery tech has gotten so good that (at least I think) a lot of people can get 95%+ of their required functionality from a 12V tool.
The old and new Metabo HPT' triple hammers have been our go to impact drivers replacing our Milwaukees and Makita both due to real world use , price, warranty etc for the last 4-5yrs
Too many tests just in raw power to drive large fasteners that we use other tools for that are better than an impact driver and would significantly lessen the lifetime of even the most powerful impact drive(Ie two burned up Milwaukee's we have doing just that)
My triple hammer is my favorite impact driver to use over the dewalt

My winner is the DCF850 paired with a powerstack battery because size and weight is the most important part for me.

The one I go to and really like the mixture of finese and power is Bosch. It does not destroy the work as the Dewalt I also used for a while, it feels great and has some nice tricks up the sleeve.
Great vid! Too bad my Dewalt 850 just broke on me the other day when using it on impacting a smal 3/8 inch nut onto a peice of exercise equipment I was repairing. I've been a Dewalt platform guy for a long time using their tools professionally in the building trades and have praised their saws and the 885 impact up and down for years as I've used and abused them and they just keep going. However I'm quite disappointed with my newer Dewalt impact drivers. My 850 just broke where the motor spins but the bit shaft doesn't turn. And my 840 and my 887s which replaced my worn but still working 885s all have collet issues where bits will not release quite often. At this point I'm starting to worry about a possible slide in Dewalts production quality. Maybe I'm just unlucky. I certianly don't want the quality issues to be true because I've been a Big Dewalt fan for over a decade because their tools have served me well and helped me to earn a living. But to be honest I'm a bit worried at this point.
Great video… BUT you guys left out the Kobalt XTR variant and only used the 2nd gen Kobalt variant? Wondering why you did that, as it’s regarded as one of the best out there. I have the Metabo HPT 36v and the XTR driver and prefer it out of the 2. Thanks for the review though, it was awesome to watch!
Ergonomics are almost always number one reason to use a tool. Power doesnt matter if its terrible to use

@@ConcordCarpenter The title says best impact driver. Both DeWalt and Flex both have new battery technologies that would have blown the competition away and also come as a kit. So basically flex and DeWalt get punished because the other brands don't have that technology yet.

Btw makitas also have a flashlight mode, you put the selector in the middle position and press the trigger to enter it and again to exit it.
Also some tools are short but have a wide head, and some have a more narrow head for a better approach angle, that is also a factor :)
Yes, they do and apparently, I breezed over that bullet. Both Makitas are4 solid tools!!!

Brilliant guys only thing why no stacked lithium batteries the flex would have been a different tool with the 6.0 it comes with in a kit but it was an even playing field, and that's awesome!!! I'm not understanding how Ryobi won the torque test or DeWalt for that matter I have these two tools and assure you there far from the most powerful 😂.. let me stop and thank you guys for all of your hard work 🙏
I had the ryobi hp and I know it's not a drill driver but I used it with a spade bit to drill holes to wire a house and it performed well but after the job it wouldn't keep a consistent rpm even if the trigger is held to its max. The rpms go up and down
Ive got the Dewalt and it is perfect for me. I carry about 7 different tools in one bag and size, weight, power, and ruggedness are critical for me. You could get different results simply based on what you need. My buddy does sheet metal and uses Milwaukee because it suits his needs and he doesnt carry many tools around with him all at once and doesnt change bits often. I need to save weight and space without sacrificing capability. Speed is really a low priority, and rugedness and dependability is critical.
How many screws per minute. How much does it weigh. How long does it run on 2Ah battery and how long does it run on 4 or 5Ah battery (Likely, the biggest battery I would ever deploy on an impact driver. Not that cost isn't a real factor, comfort is just as important.

Skill, Flex and Kobalt are all the same company like Ryobi, Ridgid and Milwaukee are also all the same company but what is interesting is that Chervon that makes Skill/Flex/Kobalt somehow really really manages to make 3 very different and unique tools, they do a really good job with that and the price aspect is also very fair.
Great video. I would personally swap the DeWalt and flex placement but overall great rankings and testing. I always refer to your rankings bc they don't seem sponsor biased

With Bosch, I find that it wont get the job done the fastest but it will always get it done and it's nice to work with.
