BRICS: An economic club or a G7 challenger? - BBC Newsnight

  • In geopolitical terms the G7 almost always garners the lion's share of political and media attention in the West and beyond, but when the BRICS summit began yesterday in Johannesburg, not only were Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa talking about expansion, there is also the ambition to become a counter to Western domination as they see it.
    There's no shortage of countries lining up to join BRICS - Argentina, Belarus, Indonesia and Nigeria among them - but while the leaders of the five nations are broadly in agreement about expansion, at the outset of the summit Brazil's president, Lula de Silva, insisted that BRICS is not meant to challenge the G7.
    Newsnight’s International Correspondent Emir Nader reports.

    the so-called "Anti-West" is called, and seen from a Eurocentric lens. It is what BBC calls it, not Bric countries/members call it. It is an alliance of the Global South, the low, marginalized, colonized, and developing countries, that have been muted by the powerful developed countries for centuries. These countries have a mind, head, voice, hardworking people, love, intelligence, and right to do things that not the Global North dictates them to do.

      No, it's an alliance of dictators who abuse human beings, steal money from their people then complain they are poor.
      If they had any ethics at all, they would realise that the forces that "mute" people of the WORLD are the global super-rich oligarchs. Mostly not even registered in US or Europe.

    There are many many aspects that differentiate the G7 from BRICS. Geographically, it is obvious that the G7 is parked at the North, while BRICS at the South. But geography aside, the two are rather different in terms of organization.
    Without saying, the G7 is being led by the US, Basically a bunch of 7 nations of like-mindedness. But it is more akin to "like the minds of the US" than each G7 nation have own set of foreign policies. That is why President Macron said "Europe is becoming the vessel of the US".
    But would, and could China be the equivalent of the US in the BRICS group? I think to a degree, it might be, but mostly in the economic aspect. China will gain not only massive political advantage, but also economic wise in terms of market access as well as making the BRI so much simpler to proceed.
    Economy and politics aside, I think the MOST commendable aspect of BRICS is the new memberships for Iran and Saudi Arabia. Two countries would not contemplate sitting at the same table, now are discussing the best way forward for peace and development, making the lives of their respective countries better, instead of firing off rockets and bombs.
    It is still early days. Whether they can pull this off is still to be seen. It certainly makes the US worry. Jake Sullivan of the White House was dismissal of it by highlighting the fact that China and Russia are the main players. What he missed is that now, with Iran and Saudi Arabia, the oil market is concentrated within the BRICS. If you think the OPEC+ is bad for the US, think BRICS !!!

      And now a lot of other former non-aligned countries are showing interest of joining BRICS, my country Indonesia clearly has made our intent to join heard, as we are currently fighting for our resource sovereignty in the WTO against the EU as they are pressuring our exports and most importantly the Nickel extractions and refineries. We are not going to be exploited for raw materials like we did in the past, trade must be beneficial to both side and give more fair shares of the pie from the economic gain of said resources exploitations.

    • @nietzchan
      @nietzchan Před rokem

      @@WalkOverHotCoal Indonesia since 2009 has been seeking for better deal with the world about its Nickel extraction, in the past companies would just dug out the ore from the ground and send them to their own countries to be processed, not only these extraction is very taxing on the environment, but also most of it's benefit is going somewhere else (see example of Freeport Grasberg mine in the past) which can be a flashpoints with the locals.
      So Indonesia slowly has been phasing out raw ore export and encourage multinational companies to set up refineries here, from those many years of sincere request only China who actually built facilities here because they are in massive demands of Nickel (for example last year 85% of Indonesian Nickel exports goes to China) while most other developed nations called Indonesia is just bluffing. So we took them 'by surprise' (not really surprising actually when it's been repeated for 12+ years) when we actually banned export of raw Nickel ore.
      Instead of renegotiating with Indonesia to build smelters here or getting a better deal instead they lobbied the WTO through EU, while the EU called Indonesia refusal of raw Nickel export as 'unfair' they by themselves also one-sided banned a lot of Indonesian commodities through multiple green regulations (palm oil, biofuel, etc). It is quite ironic when the rules only enforced when it suits their needs, because Nickel extractions also destroys the environments and people livelihood in the area.

    • @WalkOverHotCoal
      @WalkOverHotCoal Před rokem

      @@nietzchan I see. And thank you very much for taking the time to explain it to us. What Indonesia did, or the indeed any country for that matter, is within its right because the mineral is in Indonesia.
      I think time and circumstances have caught up with Europe. Those developing nation such as Indonesia are slowly and steadily working their way up the food chain. That position used to belong to the western nations such as the G7. Indonesia wants to get better value for its resources is entirely the right thing to do.
      Australia is in the opposite scale to Indonesia. As you are aware, China is buying huge quantity of iron ore from Australia. Australia finds it easier to just dig it up and ship it out. It used to process iron ore to make steel in NSW. But that was considered very polluting, so the steel mills were closed. Now China deals with the pollution, and get good money for the end products in the form of steel, or even further up the manufacturing ladder, finished goods for exports.
      Take Lithium for example. The west, especially America, is complaining and worrying that China would leave them stranded by limiting the sales of Lithium to them. So the hot topic now is Lithium mining. America is investing substantial amount of money in Australia in Lithium mining, saying that it no longer needs to rely on China.
      However, like so many projects before, it just might die of a quiet death. I reckon that western countries have short attention span. It probably has something to do with election cycles. a change of government may result in a substantial policy change.
