  • Short Summary
Join us for an insightful webinar as we delve into the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the realm of the built environment.
    About this Event
This session will shed light on the revolutionary applications of AI in construction, architecture, and urban planning, emphasising its role in optimising design processes, enhancing sustainability, and revolutionising building management systems. With expert speakers and real-world case studies, this webinar aims to unravel the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, paving the way for a future where intelligent technologies redefine the very fabric of our physical spaces. Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights into the forefront of AI innovation and its profound implications for the built environment of tomorrow.
Speaker 1 & 2: Artificial Intelligence & Biomimicry (Milan Master & Stefano Semprini)
    Milan Master:
Milan is a Sustainability and Green Building Engineer with a passion for bridging the gap between nature and the built environment. He is currently the department head at Ecolution Consulting and oversees and variety of green building and EDGE related certifications. Milan also has a Master’s in Sustainable Energy Efficient Cities from Wits University where his thesis looked at the Living Building Challenge within the South African context. Out of work hours Milan can be found helping out Biomimicry South Africa as well as the Regenerative Collaborative South Africa on their marketing and other related aspects.
    Stefano Semprini:
Stefano's initial academic training was in mechatronic engineering (BEng). Thereafter, he spent half a decade working in mechanical design/engineering (in the deep sea mining, oil and gas industry), and business development and project management (in the solar energy industry).
Thereafter, he began travelling continuously and extensively for another five years (and counting), while undertaking an intuitive yet rigorous, self-directed curriculum comprising online courses, prolific reading, workshops and more. In the process, he encountered a diversity of perspectives and solutions being brought forth in service of life, and experimented with creating a few of his own.
Speaker 3: Decolonising Future Imageries (Dr Sechaba Maape)
Dr Sechaba Maape is the founder of Afreetekture, a ‘parallel design practice’. Dr Maape established Afreetekture as an alternative experimental practice aimed at producing architecture and other designs based on the philosophical and theoretical framework derived from his 10 years of in-depth study of indigenous knowledge systems and spaces in South Africa. Dr Maape works closely with professional archaeologists and paleontologists, as well as indigenous knowledge practitioners as part of the knowledge fields by which he draws insights for design. From his research of portals and caves in his home of Kuruman, Dr Maape has gained the tools to better understand portals to alternative realities moving beyond the futurist speculations to ruptures in current reality and portals to other ones.
Dr Maape’s is a Senior lecturer at the WITS School of Architecture and Planning, and is convener of the Bachelor of Architecture programme at the school. He coordinates and teaches in the award winning first year architecture design course, where students undergo a process of drawing out alternative realities collectively using tools from indigenous knowledge systems from South Africa. Dr Maape also teaches and coordinates first year theories and history of architecture as well as supervises in the Masters of Architecture (professional) MArch(Prof), and Masters in Urban Studies (MUS) in Sustainable and Energy Efficient Cities (SEEC) programme, in which he also explores with students alternative paradigms towards sustainable cities.
