The Last of Us is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. Based on the 2013 video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog, the series will follow Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. It will feature Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Joel's smuggler partner Tess.
The series, said to be the largest television production in Canadian history, was filmed in Alberta from July 2021 to June 2022. It is the first HBO series to be based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games. The first season will consist of nine episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann; the latter wrote and directed the game. Original game composer Gustavo Santaolalla will compose the score. The irony how Joel loss Sarah not because of the fungus but because humanity's lack of compassion. And since then he closed his heart from caring for another person other than Tess and Tommy. I played the game so many times since day one when it came out of PS3. Then PS4 and PS5. I already knew what is coming, and yet that scene with Sarah taking her last gasping breath still hit me hard even more than when I played the game. Good writing, awesome set pieces and camera angles, and most of all - great acting from every cast.
it wasn't so much a lack of compassion but our willingness to sacrifice everyone else to save others (usually our own)

80’s meant danger. That’s what Ellie figured out when she joked about hearing “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and seeing Joel’s reaction. I assume on the paper it had an X for 80’s songs meaning “danger don’t go outside the walls” for when Joel and Tess were smuggling things
I don't think she was joking.
She threw it out intentionally knowing that it was an 80s song to observe his reaction to see if she could figure out what it meant.
It shows a deliberate and intuitive nature.
The 80s song probably meant the fireflies were completely wiped out in Boston, including the group Joel, Ellie, and Tess were supposed to meet up with to drop Ellie off, meaning they’ll have to cross the country on their own to personally take Ellie to someone who can make a cure

Yeah, I wasn't speaking so much in terms of plot, more character development.
I don't think the song actually played, she was interested in what an 80s song meant so she picked one out of the book to gauge Joel's reaction to decipher the code.
I was getting at that she was being intentional and using a level of reason to figure out what an 80s song meant.
That said, the closing song is an 80s song which we now know means trouble.
I've played the games so I know what it's getting at so I won't leak spoilers...
The plot so far hasn't deviated from the game, only a few details have changed and a bit of world building.
It took me rewatching to realize the planes were all doing emergency takeoffs. The one that crashed stalled, either because there were infected on board or they took off too dangerously
Are you sure? Seemed more likely that flights were grounded to prevent spread to more cities, and the one that crashed probably already had an infected on board
@BDUBS720 Sorry I know I'm late to the discussion here, but it seemed clear to me that the planes were attempting to perform emergency landings. In an extreme emergency, where planes can't make it to an airport, they look for the next best thing to a runway which would be a highway. The planes most likely had a few people on board who turned, causing chaos so naturally the pilots would try to get out of the air. Considering it was about 3 AM, they would assume the highway would be relatively empty. It's the only explanation for why multiple planes would be flying so low so close to each other.
I recommend looking up a video on CZcams about the Cordyceps fungus in real life. There's a video that shows it infecting and controlling an ant, taking it back to its colony and releasing spores to infect other ants. It really seems like there's another mind controlling them, it's wild.
Yeah the reason its such a scary concept as it is something that could be possible.. obv now no fungus is close to being advanced enough to do that to larger mammals never mind human beings but the thought of one evolving to eventually do it is truly terrifying.. that would be a real zombie apocalypse of mother natures design.
@@itsbreezy2521 It's not that fungus is not advanced enough, it's just the fact that fungus haven't realised the presence of mammals yet from evolutionary point of view. Mammals are too young compering to the insects. But if it does then the fun can realy begin.
@@1977sardo I wouldn't go as far to say fungi aren't aware of the presences of mammals. Many forms of fungi attack mammals all the time, such as many of the more nefarious spores of mold. Black mold, for instance, can do some serious damage to mammals, and many humans who are exposed to it suffer pretty serious side effects. However, as they discussed in the beginning of the show, our bodies run too hot of a base temp, so the spores are all eventually cooked once they make their way into our blood stream.

This reaction is for the gamers who question why a screen adaptation needed to be made. I am so happy that people who haven't played this game can now experience this amazing story!!!
As a extremely huge Last of Us who absolutely loves both games Part 1 and 2 loved every moment of the pilot there is some changes made but at least they stick as most to the game material as possible which is great.
The best adaptation of a video game ever made and we are still in the first episode, can’t imagine how good and brutal this will get if this is the start! Btw that info about the fungus in the start of the episode is true this a real fungus that infects zombified ants
I’ve played the video games so many times and am sooo passionate about this story and these characters. I think HBO has done an AMAZING job so far of giving little Easter eggs to those who have played the game but then also expanding on it. I love getting more of a back story on the characters and the things in the story that they have changed from the game have still made sense to me and I’m really liking the changes. I think this is going to be a GREAT series!❤️

Out of love for the game and curiosity how non-gamers think about the show, I have watched lots of reaction videos and damn, you are by far the best reactors I've come across on CZcams. You pick up everything and make intelligent and thoughtful comments and remarks. And most importantly you don't pause and talk over the video every couple seconds lol

I had the same reaction when I was playing the game…
I hate horror games but I was so glued I couldn’t stop playing..it was like a movie
Loved the first videogame. Played it at a time while I was caregiving for my mom [r.i.p.] 🕊. It helped me through rough times. This first episode managed to capture scenes in the game very well. Especially with Sarah and her dad, Joel. The scene when she is dying. Very much the same in the videogame. That's what made the game very popular. "Emotional" and it gets you invested in the storyline. Not simply killing the infected. But true character arc.
Hope for a good series. I'm interested where the series goes.
Jakarta, ah yes. Along with the reference to Jakarta, the major supplier of wheat based products, there are other small but important references made throughout the episode in the form of 'pancakes' 'biscuits' 'cookies' and 'cake'... Non of which are eaten by Joel, Tommy, or Sarah.

If you can't hear certain scenes captions can help a lot, you can choose the size they show on HBO max to minimize them
The Infected don't eat people, they seek to spread the fungus. They don't need a steady supply of people to survive. They only need people to further the spread.
Since the code is based on 60s, 70s and 80s. It's clear from the level of synthesized instruments in the song at the end it's too new to be 70s. Synthesizers made a big entry into the music industry in the 80s.

Those three airplanes were actually emergency taking off. You can see the wheels retracting. One didn't make it.
The fun thing about watching the reaction videos to people who have never played the game or if you don't want to play the game they have a movie version of The Game on CZcams that allows you to experience the game without actually playing it so that you can kind of see the story but the fun thing about it is is watching people who don't know anything about it and their predictions and you already know the answers to their inquisitiveness
The reason the planes are so low, is cuz the airport traffic would be halted but all the planes coming in for landing would eventually have to land some how. So picking somewhere maybe flat and long enough could suffice for an emergency crash landing.
But also yes, there also likely be infected in the planes at the same time. So stacking that and what I said ^ would cuz the planes to be low/crashing.
Also keep in mind, unless the pilots would be infected (the plane would crash from way up in the sky a lot earlier than a landing), the pilots are locked and secured in the cockpit. So they would be fine but would eventually have to land anyway.

I've played it on all three systems too Doing the PS5 The Last of Us version right now atm. So amazing this re engineer upgrade. But yeah that opening was damn near perfection on Episode 1. Choked up again with Sarah..AGAIN DAMNIT! Lol. Series starting off 9.5/10!

Play the game after you finished all 9 episodes of season 1 and then play Part 1 on PS5 if you can get your hands on it and you have a PS5. If no PS5, Last of Us Part 1 is releasing on PC on steam early March 2023. If no PC the PS4 Last of Us 1 remastered version still holds up today.

Possible theory: The reason why the plane is flying so low because emergency landing... airport ahead.
16:50 cars don't generally explode when on fire, that's just a movie myth. For it to explode, it would neat to have a pressurized LPG or methane tank. Gasoline will burn out slowly and diesel might not burn at all.
Never played the game,seen it on Twitch streams. So my intro into this from the start gripped me until the end. Sadly Pedro Pascal is in another hit show protecting a child that's the key to everything. BUT still saw him as Joel in this. I'm sure the comparison to Mando is gonna happen. Is it a just comparison? With that plot driver then yes.
Other than that, the show explained everything well and without trying to over educate the audience too much or spoil it with too much dialogue. I am looking forward to the next episodes. Well acted and the death of Sarah got me crying, it was well done, and that obviously got me emotionally invested with Joel, as much as I wanted Joel to survive and be safe. Twenty year passing and the words "stay safe" being said by the guard was a nod to our real life pandemic words of saying goodbye. That was a good used of real life used sayings brought into a virus show. Kinda got me invested into the plot so more. Great first episode and the end credits use of Depeche Mode was great. " I'm taking a ride with my best friend". Well I'm along for the journey too

You should play the game! It’s amazing and the show impressed me a lot as a game fan. The Last of Us is one of my top favorite games of all time.

One difference between the game and show was that when they were caught outside the walls, they were just some random FEDRA grunts who caught them. By changing it so someone Joel knew, it both made it more personal and also showed how Joel was much more violent and inhumane as hinted by the "what you're capable of" statement earlier. In videogames you kill a lot of random enemies so killing loses a lot of the impact, so it's great to see it made much more clear in the show. Losing Sarah made him numb, as seen with him being able to throw that child's body into the fire. I love the changes made for this medium.

LOL well Sarah and Joel did live in Texas. So the picture of George W. on the school wall, the super religious neighbors (even if Joel isn't particularly religious at all), owning guns etc. kind of is done perfectly IMO. But just a great opening and great acting by everyone. Would say, maybe try and watch the opening of the game (up until Joel loses Sarah at least), and compare!
I cry every single time in the intro of the Last of Us game when Sarah, ya know.. like every time.. and I've played it around 7 times or so? At least. I also teared up at this performance as well in the show

If the airports are in some kind of danger (like a terrorit attack or malfunction) the planes are deviate to another. I guess they run out of safe airports.

And yea to think this could happen in theory, this makes much more sense than other zombie shows because in other movies/shows they are dead with rotting bodies so they wouldn't be able to move around much and would die die just by being exposed to the elements, with this they are somewhat alive aren't really rotting etc this is just way more realistic and has the possibility of actually happening

FYI good reaction. The video game was not a game, as there are no significant game choices or good gameplay. It was a TV short story that you followed step-by-step. It is the main reason it translates directly to several TV episodes. If you want to compare the HBO series to the game, several CZcamsrs have excellent cutscene uploads. They take about 6 hours to watch.

@Bunny The Guy So it wasn't really spoilers in the video we watched, it was more just something that helped explain the world and some of the core characters. We haven't seen any of the gameplay or sought out plot points. It was the New Rockstars video that came out over the weekend. :)

I mean, there are people who read wiki synopsis of books or key issues of comics before a show or movie comes out, and they don't think that's spoilers. Somehow the acting of the sarah scene make me feel absolutely nothing during a scene that has had me cry every time ever since I saw it the first time in the game... Litterally rewatched the game being played again and it still made me cry.... It was just too overacted and forced in the show, rushed, not in a length sense, but in a performance sense.
It is so disheartening that ppl just want to be entertained, and really never notice the deeper meaning behind these movies!!!
