we gotta talk about formula 1 in Las Vegas

  • Let's talk about the spectacle sandwich that was the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. I predicted Vegas wasn't ready for F1 but I suppose it was the other way around. Time to breakdown unsecure storm drains, sparks flying, Blue Man Group, and racing as a commercial break.

I grew up around racing. My dad raced. I wanted to race at one point. My friends raced, etc. My first time at a track, was before I was even 1 yr old, and we went consistently every weekend for years. The anxiety is REAL. These cars are fast. And they're relatively safe, but *people still can and DO die*.
I'm glad Amanda's dad noticed and asked. It's really easy to get caught up in anxiety over these races.

There were many of those small lids that weren't a part of the track surface itself but were just behind the barriers concealing conduit which was used to run cabling for broadcast, telemetry, etc. along the fenceline or across/under the track. I was a marshal in another section of the course and we had a couple example lids similarly set aside which became interesting objects to examine during the extended downtime between Thursday night's/Friday morning's sessions!

The times that the different aspects of the race were held at really frustrated me. The times were very late for every time zone in the US. Their whole justification for adding another US race was to get more US interest, but as an American who already loves f1 - even I was not staying up or waking up at 3am for qualifying. I can’t imagine being a casually interested American and realizing that I would have to stay up till 3 or 1 to watch the race. The fact they made the races practically unwatchable on the east coast was such a stupid idea if you want to get people into the sport. I think the second year is a lot harder to make appealing to audiences, so they’ve really shot themselves in the foot. I’m so excited to see how it turns out next year, because I think year 2 will make or break whether or not f1 stays in Vegas.

I am so mad about how everything nowadays is like "Oh, we want you to like this, so you keep coming back and/or buying more!" but they always botch the thing they are selling. Disney has been the absolute king in this matter, but every other business is doing it as well. Rental homes, online stores, freaking social media, etc. Feels like everywhere I go, people are trying to make me pay premium for scraps.

I agree with some of your points. The set up for the race was too disruptive to locals. There is always going to be disruption, but it was too disruptive and went on too long for locals. I feel like the build out just wasn't efficient. Why were grandstands built so far in advance, and the film on the bridges definitely didnt need to be put up weeks before. The fact that it was able to be redone days before as people peeled it off shows a couple of days before was enough. It was unnecessarily inconveniencing tourists who werent there for the race weekend.
I will say one thing that annoyed me is people getting annoyed that they wouldnt be able to see the race for free and f1 were putting up screens etc. I mean, of course you cant watch it for free. Otherwise, why would people buy tickets. Not to mention the health and saftey of it, if you have free viewing spots how do you do crowd control there, you have no say how many people would go there, blocking walkways and staircases etc. It would actually be quite dangerous. Its why walkways over the track are always screened off even at non street circuits, so they remain clear for people to walk on.
I feel like F1 isnt used to being in a place where it isnt the sole focus. Plenty of people wanted to go to vegas not for the gp, weeks before the race, but were put off by the distruption. Lessons do need to be learned so it runs more smoothly. If it can be done in monaco like a well oiled machine were there is no space, and a tiny population, im sure it can be done in vegas were there is more space and more manpower.
The other thing, f1 (and the hotels for that matter) will have learned is that they got too greedy. The fact that tickets were available on such short notice just shows it was overpriced. It wouldn't shock me if prices are a bit lower next year, or at least, fewer super expensive packages.

...you could do a bit of F1 content during the season, as a treat! :D It'd be fun hearing your thoughts on the goings on in F1 especially given the thing you've said about how "Watching DTS is like seeing the movie and thinking it's great, but then watching F1 is like reading the book and realizing the movie wasn't all that."
I will say I think Max more so than winning changing his mind on Vegas (he won all those Sprint races and still craps on them) he enjoyed the racing that he got involved in. I do feel like between the rest of the days and Saturday someone pulled Max aside and went, "Listen you better say something *positive* if you win." And Coulthard at the weird Bellagio post-race interview really seemed to dig with that one question like, "Say something nice, Max, say something nice...!"
What I will say is that Las Vegas just based on 1 race I think it would make a perfect end-of-season race. Because it FELT like the season ended there with everything that went on and then Abu Dhabi uhh the previous weekend? That felt like a weird epilogue (the purpose of which was mainly for Ferrari to crush Leclercs hopes and dreams a tiny bit more, god Charles you give the team all of yourself and they don't even let you do donuts in celebration? Tragedy.).

It was a great experience. They did have the same issue as the LV GP, with concerts (Killers and Queen and Tiesto) being included with some tickets...and it wasn't clear which tickets included it. But they never checked your tickets, so even GA got in for free for the concerts 😅

Eg The local workers union situation should be discussed, and F1 paid for this race not L.V. which is unique. However not a bad breakdown of your experience. All new tracks have issues even established ones too. This will go down in history as having a few teething problems then produced one of the best races this season. Going to a race is completely different to watching it on TV where way more info is broadcast. Yes bad TV direction is often a sore point amongst fans. Glad you had a good time with your Dad.

If and when you ever do live IN Vegas would love to have a video about the living difference between being a local vs a tourist. (I am aware this would be a years long journey I am not in a rush)

Opening ceremony access was only main grandstands, skybox and Paddock Club.

Sounds like an interesting trip was had for you and your dad! Would love to see you do a video on one of the Formula E electric F1 races too. Those cars are just as fast but not as loud (but not silent)

You'll probably find that the effect on local traffic is much less the second year, as most construction work is one-time and setting up the track (borders, lights) usually takes way less time the second year, when experience has been gained.
Also the setting of the price point of tickets and accomodation will probably be a lot more reasonable. They tried to set it too high this time and had to reduce later to sell enough, that leaves disgruntled early buyers. I expect next years price to be half of what it started out this time.

As someone who has never seen a race or been interested before, you have convinced me to watch the next race. It sounds so interesting and fun

I'm a fan of McLaren and Williams too 😂 it was a stressful race. Happy to hear Logan got some love from the home crowd considering how much he's talked about racing in Vegas for karting.

what's frustrating is there's a way to advertise "hey look what else we have to offer in vegas that you might enjoy" without it overshadowing the event, but they didn't seem to want to go that route.

Did I know anything about F1? Nope
Did I know anything about racing? Not really
Did I even know anything about Vegas? Sadly no
Did I fully follow Swell's full saga documented in the past few videos and become invested? Hell yeah!

F1 and the city of Vegas don't seem to grasp that American racing fans are mostly used to spending less than $100-150 for a full day of professional racing DAY OF. The prices for American F1 races are just beyond insane.

Holy hell Amanda! 5 nights comped with a view, dayum!
I have a funny story: my friends wanted to go to Vegas for the first time and of course the first day we were there was the last day of the races.
We didn't buy any seats or anything, but did luckily manage to see the cars race by super close when we were going down the escalator of the pedestrian bridge.
It was really cool since they tried sooooooo hard to block plebs from seeing it LOL
But yeah, we felt really bad for all the locals who had to endure the terrible traffic, etc.
