- After several years of placing in the top 3 in the SP and FS but missing the podium due to figures, Denise finally got her due when she won the 1981 Worlds. This is her short program. It looks like she may have doubled an intended 3T/2L combination (which she nailed in her 1980 Olympic SP) but the rest of the program was clearly strong enough to keep her in the running going into the FS.

She is amazing!
Minolta copiers, classical 80s:) In my opinion Denise Biellmann is the best female skater of all time.
Brilliant!
that music!
I don't think she used that...its been substituted
That music was wild! 😄
She has tremendous speed and her footwork and spins are amazing but I do believe the women were doing triples in the combination here so the technical marks are fair in that respect
Лучше неё не катался никто! Прыгали да, но скольжение и музыкальность фантастика! Она бы могла прыгать , но тогда бы мы не видели это искусство!
Witt won the short programme that year being the only one who succsessfully jumped the triple in the combination
The double axel was amazing.
And the steps
Pretty neat routine. Idk if that music was wild for her day but I'd like to see that music used in a program in present skating.
The 2 judges that gave her the 5.4 for artistic should have been penalized and thrown off the panel !!!
Это было время когда фигурное катание было искусством
Both of her programs (both SP and FS) that year featured a number of moves that very closely emulates Sandy Lenz’s signature moves. But I suppose that had little to do w/ the relatively low presentation marks by some judges...
Compulsory figures really pushed a lot of brilliant skaters down, and it's almost too depressing to think. They should have been eliminated in the 30's (or at least substantially reduced in importance). To think that it took until the 1990's!!! to get them out of here, wow.
5.3????5.4???? NOOOoooo....
What is Denise doing now?
@CoCoNuTsiopatHic Lipinski and Hughes got gold medals which Kwan couldn't get but Kwan is far a more famous skater and had a longer career.
Her artistic marks were always too low, especially in 80 and 81, when she was by far the best of all the girls. And I know she missed the triple in her combo, which would probably be a automatic 3/10 deduction in this day, but a 5.2 and 5.3 for techinal ???
jubbadupa I, too, was shocked to see not one but two 5.4s for her presentation. BTW, I don’t think there were any deductions for the doubled combo. Unlike today, there was no requirement to include a triple in the combo, so the judges simply evaluated her skating here, which included a very well-executed 2T-2L.
Her combination was simpler than 10 other ladies! 5.2 for technical was perfectly fair.
I agree with you about Biellmann, mostly, but I still don't think your "anyone who says differently doesn't have a clue" attitude is justified. Denise's style just may not appeal to the same emotions that plenty of fans consider skaters like Witt and Kwan capable of reaching. And even though Kwan never did figures, I don't necessarily think they would've held her back. I'm inclined to think that both Lipinski and Hughes likely could've had a much harder time with them than Kwan would've.
