  • Having not picked this bass up for 10 years Im a bit rusty, and it took me a couple of attempts but I think that this is how it used to go, I'm pretty sure that it was a mick karn riff at the end of one of his songs. I used to dplay it as a warm up before a gig or recording session back in the eighties..........felt like yesterday once I started playing!

How I'd love to own one of the preowned vintage Wal MK1/MK2 Fretless Bass Guitars or a New Model but their price's are just way out there...
I honestly can't justify paying over £5K on a New one & many S/H Wal Basses now sell for over £6K...
Financially, though I could buy one, but I'm just not pulling in that sort of money that would justify paying for that for one of these amazing bass guitars & the heart breaking catch is it's the only Fretless Bass I've ever truly hankered for for nearly 35 year's now...
I've owned an Aria Pro II SB1000 Fretless (Matsomoku Made) along with a couple of MusicMan Stingray Fretless Basses along with a (built in Germany) Warwick Fretless & a few mid priced fretless brands but none of them produced that sound a Wal does...
Sure when I'm looking to reproduce the famous Fretless Sound of Pino Palladino or Tony Levin I have my MusicMan Stingray Bass Guitar's that are known as the basses to have for that signature recognisable sound but even the highest priced New MusicMan Stingray is more affordable than the prices asked for a S/H Wal...
I've watched them come & go as quickly as any store or online website has advertised them, which is usually that same day, but I always thought one day I'll get one but then I had to be realistic & think about something else that can deliver the Fretless sounds I'm looking for & though it took year's for one to show up in my local guitar store I didn't hesitate on saying Yes to buying a S/H Pedulla Buzz Fretless Bass Guitar...
To the gentleman in this upload that said in his comments that he would never part with his Wal, I say " I sure hope you've still got your Wal " As these bass guitars, whether Wal or Pedulla, don't come around that often & you'd never forgive yourself if ever did sell your Wal...
My pain for owning a Wal Fretless has been diminished 10 fold since buying my beautiful Pedulla Buzz Fretless Bass Guitar in December 2019 as Michael V Pedulla is the only other Master Luthier I think that truly nailed the Fretless sound on electric bass guitars & each bass he built is a functioning work of art & when I first saw my Pedulla in person the photographs did not do it justice & I'm truly honoured & lucky enough to be able to buy one as I thought my window of opportunity had gone when he announced his retirement in mid 2019 as these bass guitars will only appreciate in value & become more difficult to buy...

      @@nocre2948
I know this & would want A Wal but ti give you an idea of how difficult they are to buy Pre-owned & New, is a might difficult to say the least, & below is a brief history of Wal...
In 1988, Ian Waller died of a heart attack at age 43, after which Pete Stevens continued running the business.
However, through the period post-2000 a series of circumstances led to a significant contraction in the company. This culminated in Stevens working as a sole trader with little or no additional workforce, causing the supply of Wal basses to become increasingly limited. Around 2005 Pete Stevens' failing health and a number of changes to the company's workshop premises caused him to fall badly behind on the company's order book. By the end of 2007, Stevens' increasing health problems forced him to retire, leaving the future of the brand in serious doubt.
However, on 20 August 2008, it was announced that business would resume under luthier Paul Herman, who had previously worked at Wal during the late 1980s and 1990s. Although production would move from High Wycombe to a workshop in Fetcham, Surrey. Herman cleared outstanding back-orders[9] and on 5 October 2009, began inviting new orders again with the launch of a new Wal basses website.
On 28 December 2011, Pete Stevens died, shortly after his 65th birthday.
Wal were & are like many independent guitar building or Luthier related companies & only built their guitar's in number's that they knew would sell...
Which makes sense as there's no point building a product in certain number's only for them to sit there but there was a time when they sold in high number's & even when/like Michael V Pedulla/Wal cut back to minimilist staff & building of their bass guitar's there has like all UK independent guitar builders like Moon Guitar's /Wal Guitar's/John Diggins Guitar's & Rob Greens Status range/to name a few/have quite a long waiting list & apart from their amazing build quality & overall sound this is why Wal Bass Guitar's hold such a high price in the preowned market...
I sent off an email to Wal with regards to the procedures on getting on the waiting list for a New Wal & even once I've picked All My Spec's & paid the money upfront, I was looking at a 2 year wait before they would even think about starting to build the one i might have ordered & that's why I keep looking & trying to get one Pre-owned, even though I know I could pay a little less for the exact bass but built New...
You are correct in that life is Short & Unpredictable & hence why I jumped at the chance of buying the Michael V Pedulla Fretless I now own... As I knew they were & are highly sought after for the exact reasons Wal are & the fact that MVP retired in March/April of last year (2019) I couldn't pass up the chance of buying one of the only few independent Luthiers that I've admired from afar, because in all my time of recording in studios & playing Live I never once saw an MVP Fretless Bass Guitar " in my Country " never mind up for sale...
These bass guitar's are the stuff of legend & maybe one day when things to back to some form of normality after this coronavirus has been put under control then I might start to put that money aside for a New Wal & once I've saved it, which is roughly at today's prices £5500.00, I'll go & definitely order one & wait it out but if anything I see the price for these basses go up even more now because of the revenue lost during the worst of the coronavirus outbreak or maybe because they make them in such small number's & have a 2 year waiting period it won't have had any major impact on the building of these amazing bass guitar's...
Before I go as I don't want to take up too much of your time, but it's been my & many musicians in the UK experience that many UK built bass guitar's are rarely seen & used in the UK & the 2 main countries i see them up for sale or end up in are America or Japan & in my year's of playing Live/rehearsing & recording in Recording Studios I've only come across 1 Fretless Wal that belonged to a Producer at one of the recording studios & even though he wasn't even a bass player in his spare time he loved that Wal Fretless & would often joke with me that his wife & kid's would go first before his Wal Bass & that's the sort of prestige & heritage these guitar's come with & unless your pulling in some major greenbacks, then they are on a wishlist that hopefully I might be able to one day own...
In light of the still ongoing coronavirus outbreak stay safe and healthy where ever you are in the world...
