    The owner/ceo is awesome too. I was gonna return my set due to the mic not working well with the Xbox and he messaged me multiple times (even gave me his personal cell) to help me get better function from it and even said he will send me a new longer mic that now comes standard with the headset.
    Absolutely amazing customer service (right from the top guy of the company).
    Something I want to say to anyone who buys them, give them a few days for your ears and mind to adjust to what makes them brilliant. I came from headsets that blasted loud volume through my ears so when I first tried these, I was missing the volume knob, I really wanted to crank them up cause I felt like I was missing something. But as a few days went on I started noticing things I never heard before, stuff that I'm assuming got jumbled in the other sets loudness. This headset pinpoints variety sounds. In music it separates the instruments better than I've ever experienced. In video games you can hear multi-layered sounds happening in a long drawn out sound stage.
    Once you get used to them, it's actually hard to go back to other head sets. Especially when it comes to spacial audio and music.
    I started off thinking ehhh are these really worth the price, after a week or so, I highly recommend them.
    As of right now I still say the mic is below avg at best (something that really could of taken them over the top) but hopefully the longer mic helps a bit better (on xbox).
    Overall it's just something you have to experience.

    The PC38x was my first headphone/headset at the time from an “audiophile brand.” I had previously owned/used extensively headsets from hyperx, Astro, razer, and Corsair. I tried the Corsair Virtuoso XTs, but I wasn’t able to appreciate an improvement in sound quality that would warrant the nearly $300 price tag and they were uncomfortable (and the features weren’t as important). My $100 Hyper X Clould Alphas sounded just as good to me and were infinitely more comfortable. The problem for me was, I wanted a headset with $300+ sound quality!! The PC38x was my first open back headset that started me down the rabbit hole of researching and testing out audiophile headphones. The PC38x are a revelation for people, like myself, that are used to gamery branded headsets. The expanded soundstage I think is what “wows” novices, but they do not hold up as well when compared to their more expensive sennsheiser counterparts. I have since upgraded to sennsheiser HD560s (which actually wound up being cheaper on sale) and the improved detail, soundstage, and imaging is immediately apparent. However, the highs are very shouty and fatiguing and require some EQ. I’ve been trying to upgrade from these, but haven’t found anything I have felt was worth the price. From your description - I think these VZR models ones are what I am looking for. I need something with a mic for when I play mp games with friends, but I mostly play single player games. I want that bass and immersion of the closed back and toned downed highs. Also, for that kind of money, I want something that is going to last and is “built like a tank” as you said. But yea - the PC38x have their place, but are definitely not “end game,” I am hoping the VZR models ones are! Great video Techne, thank you!

    • @TheTechne
      @TheTechne  Před 2 lety +2

      100% Agree the pc38's have their place, but not worth the trend I guess would be a way to put it. Now after reading your comment, I would 100% recommend these for your situation, just like mine, I play a bunch of single player story games, and a a few FPS, but when I play a story game I want the best, I want to feel like im in the game, and these VZR's have been my go to for story games lately. Heck anything that I want an immersive sound I slap these on.

If so then I’m going to pick up a pair. also does the vzr model ones bass sound like a movie theater sub woofer bass? If so i am even more interested in these bad boys plus the comfort and build all in one.

    As a gamer and music lover, I love my X58 Jubilees headphone🎧 , Tin HiFi T3, HS70SE’s🎧, KZ12’s and a few other IEMs and recently my purchase of the infamous Techne “Penrose X” which I feel from my sound experience, is very similar but different to my X58 Jubilees. They both offer great gaming / open world experiences ….. but also a slightly different experience which is weird to say …. But it’s real and I love my collection and feel lucky 🍀 to have the opportunity to try soo many. Sound is subjective, but for all of us, it’s an important part of gaming / music listening as it does add a sense of environment and creates a feel of enjoyment and pleasure wh8ch we all love.

    So I now have the VZR and the Penrose, and you're right! This is really hard. They both have their own unique signature that makes them both amazing. On one end, the Penrose is just a straight up sound blaster, almost too much, but it's a crisp sound that just makes things shine. It's also uncomfortable but can be modded, and can have build issues, and connection issues. Mine is currently holding up, so I guess I'm fine. On the VZR side, definitely a warmer sound. My initial reaction was it may be too warm, and would drown out important things. Then I played some 2042, and holy crap. Then I jumped into Destiny 2, and just strolled through the Throne World, to soak up the atmosphere, and holy crap. It's different, it doesn't need to blast you with it, it just surrounds you with it. I do feel the ZVR has a wider sound stage, than the Penrose, though the Penrose may be sharper on certain tones, but not by much. The worrying extra warmth of the VZR didn't muddy a thing, I still felt like I was in a war I could pin point directions from, and hear the smallest ambient noise of the Throne World, and really appreciate that. They both have their use cases, but I see myself using the VZR more, on my PS5, unless I need the Bluetooth feature for Discord. Wild curiosity: what would they be like if you ran them through the Arctis Pro GameDac or the Nova Pro GameDac (if possible) or whatever else is compatible with the PS5? Would that be possible and how would that shift things up?

    I hate the term “audiophile” but I definitely fall into that category, with my daily drivers being a mix of Sennheiser HD600, 560S, or the Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro. These are running through an Apogee Symphony and are some of the best listening experiences anyone can have in the sub $1000 range. And for my money, the VZR Model One, coupled with a Schiit Hel 2, is the best gaming headset and one of the best casual listening experiences you can get. I love my Master & Dynamic MG20 if I need a wireless option, but for everything else it’s the VZR every time.

    • @Silverjerk
      @Silverjerk Před rokem +1

      @@MrTs7520 I still own and love my VZR Model Ones, but I’ve since moved on to the Audeze Maxwell. The VZR is great for spatial audio and for single player experiences, but it has almost too much low end to be used in competitive gaming. While you could use Sonar or another EQ app to improve the tuning for FPS, the Maxwells are probably the best wireless set I’ve ever tested and have become my daily driver for everything from FPS to single player experiences. I even use them often for casual listening, which is saying a lot. Good, clean bass, fantastic mids and treble. Just a really amazing set of planars; at $300 it’s a steal.
      For solo titles, I run the immersive EQ preset, and there are custom presets which you can tune in the app specifically for footsteps and FPS, and those EQs remain in the headset itself and can be turned on via one of the dials on the ear cups - so you’re not stuck using the app all the time.
      My current ranking for high-end headsets would be:
      1. Audeze Maxwell
      2. VZR Model One
      3. Master & Dynamic MG20 (the caveat being there are some QC issues with the MD, so YMMV; I went through three sets of these, but when they work they sound fantastic)
      4. Arctis Nova Pro Wireless
      5. Sennheiser PC38X
      The Epos H6pro are also fantastic, although I prefer the open back variant. And the Beyerdynamics TYGR 300s if you prefer Beyer’s tuning.
      Hope that helps. Good luck!

I would say that my Focal and Hifiman headphones are noticeably cleaner/faster sounding (better dynamics) so I can't call them giant killers but they are good for the price range (and probably better build quality than the other two). 7:43 I'm sorry but this is not correct at all. I'm an audio engineer by profession. Spatial positioning is a very proper term, and it's something that can both be enhanced by the headset you use as well as by the audio engineers making the actual mix. It can very much give a competitive advantage, because you can more precisely pinpoint where gunshots, footsteps and vehicles are coming from, assuming it was done correctly on both ends.

    • @FormSRAudio
      @FormSRAudio Před 2 lety +2

      agreed, Techne needs to stick to reviewing how comfortable a headset is because he doesn't have a clue about audio. To add, "sound is a personal preference" is only justification to say something just as uneducated as "I like blue, it's the best color". I also own the VZR headset he's reviewing here. During the nova pro discussion he's talking about out of the box you get those great sounds with VZR, "you dont need any software". He obviously didn't turn off his spatial software and play a game with these. You are correct, the mix matters, a lot. This is also why he doesn't understand why the PC38X is so good. Yes they sound different from the VZR, but if all we are comparing is the sound, the fidelity/clarity, the frequency range and driver matching gives them far more usefulness while gaming than this beloved bass and the cozy thing he rants about.

    This vs. the penrose with a eq, more bass and more highs. I love my penrose, they get so loud and i tested them with other dynamic driver headsets and the penrose blows them out the water. So idk if i can justify paying 350$ for these when i got my penrose for 240$ and the planar magnetic drivers sound so good and different compared to dynamic drivers

    Penrose OR VZR?

    • @Kmart2180
      @Kmart2180 Před 2 lety

      I have both and it just depends on what you want them for. The PenroseX get really loud, they are brighter with higher highs and not as much bass as the VZR. My biggest issue with the PenroseX is I feel like everything is so loud it gets jumbled together (especially for competitive gaming). I don't feel like they pinpoint as well.
      The first day I got the VZR, I was like, ehhh $350 and I can't turn the volume up, they sounded so faint and diluted because I was comparing them to the PenroseX. After a week, I started noticing so much more sound space, more stuff going on in the environment of games. Longer draw distances (sound stage). Where it pin points multiple layered sounds uniquely. If you are fan of music, they separate the instruments like no other headset I've ever tried. It's something that I've never experienced and it's truly amazing.
      It's hard to choose 1 over the other because it's all about what you want out of them. But if I had to choose, I'd probably go with the VZR. Unless you really want the Wireless/Bluetooth feature on the PenroseX.
