    Great video on learning anatomy. No one book does everything. You will end up with lots (I mean lots) of anatomy books, ranging from artistic to medical reference. Bridgman isn't for beginners. If you already have experience, it will make a lot of sense and one of his key principles is the idea of "interlocking and wedging" forms. Once you see this, you won't unsee it and you see it everywhere. My initial reaction to Bridgman was the same as yours, but after some experience I appreciated it and ended up drawing many of his drawings from a number of his books. For his anatomy drawings, I recommend using colored pencils to differentiate muscles, muscle groups, and bones. It really makes learning faster. I started my journey with the *Anatomy Coloring Book* with some Crayola color pencils and I highly recommend this book. Another great book to start with is the *Morpho: Simplified Forms* Learning simplified forms (and you will end up with your own simplified forms through practice) speeds up the process and allows you to focus on what's important. Finally, learning the mechanics of how the body works is great, but not the end goal. The end goal is being comfortable drawing the human figure in any pose with foreshortening and in perspective.

      Hey a Simian I have heard so much about Morpho, I may need to check that book out at some point. Glad to hear you were able to go back to bridgeman. I’ll see what happens in my experience. Thanks for this information! I recently completed the anatomy book I was working through. So let’s see!

    Highly recommend "Figure drawing for artists by Steve Huston", one of a few book that gives exercises between topics and "Force: Dynamic life drawing by Mike Mattesi" with a really good approach

    Hey Vincent, great summary. I making the most progress when go through these stages: I draw a pose from reference very sketchy. If I like it, I refine it with simple shapes. After that I draw in some details. Then I do the whole process from imagination and try maybe to exaggerate the pose to get more dynamic. Btw I also struggled with Bridgeman but I think it's more for pro artists who want to dive real deep and maybe teach on that subject. Keep up the good work and greetings from Germany.

      Hey Ganther. That sounds like a really great process I do many of those steps as well. Probably can work on exaggerating poses more. Yeah r te he bridgeman book was okay but it felt like I wasn’t learning … it felt more like I was just copying drawing. Im good to know im not the only one that had issues. I think you may be right. I had a great boss from Germany when I am was a student worker in university! Welcome!

    Hi Vincent, spot on with finding books that gel with you! You thought Tom Fox’s book was great while I disliked it. And you didn’t like Bridgman, while I thought it was fantastic 😆

    A lot of the books the older ones and some newer ones the way they explain things is pretty complicated. I have like the Andrew Loomis one how to draw the head and hands the method is really simple I learned it from Proko, but when I actually read it in the book I had no idea what he was talking about.

    Hey Vincent! I've been following your journey as I progress on my own and I had a couple questions.
    What resources did you use for perspective? Did you start learning anatomy before or after you had a grasp on perspective? And lastly, while doing you anatomy drawing, are you thinking about your vanishing points, or are you just drawing?
    Enjoying your channel, keep it up!

    • @canilearntodraw2579
      @canilearntodraw2579  Před rokem +5

      Hey Richard. Great questions and glad to have you along as we journey together. The majority of my “official” perspective work came from draw a box. That really helped in with me being able to better position and turn boxes. However I still found that when it comes to setting up entire scenes it is still difficult to make things look like I want. It takes practice even when you get the idea. I’m getting better but still need lots of work.
      I did have a bit of anatomy I guess in the proko figure drawing course. That was prior to any perspective work. And that was tough in some points, very frustrating at times. I think just being able to rotate boxes would have helped. Although, you will initially think you understand box rotation until you try to use it in something useful I have found. Which seems to the the story of learning to draw on a whole. Conceptually the things you need to understand are simple, until you try to do it ☺️. So don’t get too frustrated. It has happened and is still happening to me and I’m sure all of us.
      I’m I thinking about vanishing points when drawing anatomy. Yes and no. Yes because I’m still constructing things and that requires boxes in perspective. But the more you draw some of that starts getting pushed to the subconscious. Like riding a bike. When riding a bike you don’t think of balancing it … but technically you are … just it’s subconscious. I’m not at that stage yet … but my eraser is enjoying a longer lifespan 😁.
      Don’t take yourself too serious. Prioritize having fun and can’t wait to see or hear how things continue on your journey.

      @@canilearntodraw2579 Thank you for the detailed response! This is definitely encouraging. I'm currently on lesson 3 of draw a box, but I've kind of stepped away from it to focus more on sketching for fun. I need to make my way back around, at the very least I need to start the warmups daily.
      Anyways, I'm always tuning in to see your progress, so please keep us updated!

      @canilearntodraw2579  Před rokem +2

      Yeah I actually didn’t finish all of draw a box I have 2 lessons left. But they started to get very technical and having you buy French curve guides and ellipses guides to get things as accurate as possible and I was like … okay this is heading in a direction that is not fun. So I hit the breaks. So I understand the struggle. But even with that said. I think that that course helped me A LOT. So get as far as you can and take as many breaks as you need to keep your sanity ☺️

    I have all three you're showing here early in the video by Tom Fox, Bridgman and Jeff Mellem, and I think they're all exceptional resources, although most people are probably going to pull their hair out figuring out how to study Bridgman in the best way to get the most out of his stuff.

    Hi bro! I actually had a similar problem about how to actually apply these anatomy books, what a coincidence! This video cleared up a lot of things for me. But right now im going through tom fox's book and i find that parts such as the head and ribcage use a lot of planes to represent the shape. Am i supposed to actually draw out these complex shapes or is it something that i have to apply intuitively?

    • @canilearntodraw2579
      @canilearntodraw2579  Před 7 měsíci

      Well I’ll tell you what happened to me. Don’t know if it’s right or wrong or ideal. I had similar questions. I thought maybe I needed to construct completely and the. I would be able to do it myself from imagination. What I am learning about myself is that everything just informs how you draw… little by little it all soaks in. Not in large obvious ways … unfortunately … but months down the road you look back and just find things that you struggled with before easier. If you are doing more academic studies and drawings and that’s all you want to do then the transfer of information and practice seems more direct. Just my experience. The most important thing is that you keep practicing and keep drawing and keep moving forward. Eventually you will look back and go … oh wow this feels easier.
