No idea how you were lucky enough to get Anna who appears capable , CERTAINLY WILLING to try anything whole heartedly, and such a character who is willing to be on camera to add spice to your channel! And of course good luck to you to try to keep on top of every situation! She certainly brings out your playful side too! Not that watching you load and move tires isn’t interesting but it wouldn’t bring a smile to your viewers!

Couple of years ago i added an additional transparent layer of plastic that adheres closely to the grass, effectively sealing the clamp and preventing air ingress. Since then, we have experienced no issues with rot, and of course, we use side sheets

Tom, there is a lot of money underneath those silage sheets! Spending a little extra money on sheets (oxygen barrier, sidesheets and a good top sheet) will pay for itself quickly.
Also, if they’re available, truck tire sidewalls are a great way to put some proper weight on the sheets. Plus they’re easy to stack and don’t collect rainwater.

We sometimes just put some salt on the places that are prone to get bad. We also use side sheets and we mostly have quite good silage and almost no spillage. We also prefer sand over tires seals it in way better and the presure is more even. We do 20 to 30cm of sand preferably. We also already have drains in the clamps. I would pick another place for the bulk silo personally......

Having spent many years as a feed rep mainly in dairy nutrition the best or better silage always came from well sealed clamps. That means to sheet the sides and rear then when the top sheet goes down the side sheets can be folded over first then the top. Ideally minimum 2-3 metres extra on the sides to fold over come sheeting time.far less waste which with the cost these days to grow grass, cost of cutting and harvesting a bit more sheeting pays dividends.

Moving that silo seems like it would be worth the money/effort for a better clamp if it directly effects your milk production.
Stick it against the new shed next to your diesel tank or behind the slurry tank on the area stoned as that will also discourage it from becoming a dumping ground.

tom, to fix your problem in the corner there, you could put panels up at an angle from corner of wall around the silo back to your first pillar on the wall,it would take out that corner then that fills with water and wasteing all that silage in there,if there was an angle to your pit the water wall fall naturally to the front and keep your silage better? kepp up the good work an anna is a tonic, must be fun working beside her every day😀

Bite the bullet Tom. Use sheeting and move the tower between the clamps. In the long run you'll be able to compact the grass better without those corners and have less waste. Dont try to save a bit of money now then down the line have to do it anyways. Everything is only going to get more expensive. I.e. the midding build and not extending it one more section to have enough storage with the wet weather

the edges are always crappy, because of the water and the corner does not help for sure. The front was to be gross too, because of the traffic on it. but overall it looks quite OK.
And regarding the viewing area, it is also nice for the non-farmer to see a farm as it really is, the shed where the animals live and where you work, it may not be as pretty as the farm shop, but it is the reality of farming. exactly what we all like on your channel.

I'm still suprised thebin is between those pits. Fuel tank would be a lot better location for bins etc because of expandibility. Also pit water can run off a lot better and the silage is easier to compact. We started using side sheets and it improved our silage quality and reduces waste a lot. Give it a try ;)

We grew a combination of alfalfa & orchard grass for our cows. The alfalfa helped bolster things when the grass wasn’t its best especially in 2nd cutting and later (we sometimes got a 5th cutting, but 4 was normal - USA, Midwest). It was a nice combination which always produced a heavy first cutting. Second cutting as baled dry hay fed along side maize silage was a great combination, too. If you’ll use the molasses during the last 4 to 6 weeks on the beef you’re finishing, you’ll have better beef. Keep those animals for your farm shop.

Leave the sheer grab open just a little bit Tom and drop it off on a pallet that's what I do with mine. Another great video Tom and don't forget about your bucket brush at olyblogs.

You are right- use wooden pallets & put tires on them. Then they stack up neatly when not in use and on the clamp it helps keep the birds & animals from making holes ! Did you use the beets already? All that algae on the walls shows how much rain 🌧 this year!!

Completely different in our case then. Been feeding third cut and change to new clamp, still third cut. Cows start milking 3.4 kilo more in average 😅

you need to throw plastic up and down the sided of the clamps then when you fill it up pull the plastic over so it tucks in then roll a big roll of plastic along the top of it great way to keep it dry

Enjoyed the short time-elapsed clip when the cows came in to feed. Watched a few pick and swap their feeding stall trying to find their favorite grub.

when life gives you lemons you make lemonade , only showing good and perfect would give the wrong impression seeing you making mistakes makes it relatable to all humans.

Yep Tom we came to the same conclusion about fertiliser try this weekend we had the whole years weather last night, thunder lightening sleet hail stones wind and rain with sunshine poking through all at the same time it is really getting me down. Third cut didn't look to bad I' ve seen worse shame the milk went down but it should be good belly fill for youngsters and dry's . The girls on your team are great think they brighten your work days no end and that's worth a lot in any year but this year especially .
