The Last Boers of Patagonia - Official Trailer

The Last Boers of Patagonia is a short documentary (14 minutes) about the 100-year-old community of Afrikaans-speaking Boers who live in Argentina - half a world away from their homeland of South Africa.
Between 1902 and 1908, 600 Boer families sailed across the Atlantic in search of a fresh start. Today, despite fierce pride in their language and culture, Afrikaans is on the brink of extinction in the region.
This is the short version of the feature film that is currently in production, entitled The Boers at the End of the World. The film will be released in Afrikaans, Spanish and English in 2015.

Watching this as a black South African is out of this world. Those people are closer to me in culture than with those that they live with.

Think saying they are closer to South Africa culturally is a stretch. The speak Afrikaans but I doubt you'll catch them drinking brandy and coke, or rocking two tones and vellies. Culture isn't as static as we like to tell ourselves, it's constantly evolving.

I'm from Patagonia, from a region that has been colonized by the Welsh at the east and, apparently, the boers at the west. This region is not a friendly one, and that's why I respect and appreciate the ones that came from far away looking for a new life. Patagonia is not for everyone, just for the brave

this side (Arg meseta) of Patagonia is VERY hard, not just the land but society... I was born here, but I emigrated to Canada -- Canada has become my preferred land but I had to come back to Patag for family stuff. I don't want to end my days here, and I certainly understand the folks from the video. I'm feeling for them...

Hola soy Argentino y no estoy ofendido. Al contrario me molesta más que nuestro país no les proporcionara una tierra más generosa. Es una pena que un pueblo tan trabajador y que sufrido tanto como el sullo no pueda desarrollarse y crecer plenamente.
Las mejor tierras se las dieron a vagos italianos.
Pero el pueblo boer o Afrikaners es ciertamente muy fuerte y persistente en verdad de corazón espero que sean felices en este país tan grande y se les de el reconocimiento y la alludar que merecen.
