We've really enjoyed watching these uplifting Scarborough videos Tim. It felt like we were there with you looking at all those lovely buildings you pointed out. I had forgotten how nice it is there. Thanks a lot.

Hi Myra. I think I have been focused on the negative for a reason in Sheffield, but treated myself to a day out. However very disappointed with the North side, however the South side and the Town centre seemed more positive. I thought fantastic things were happening in the North side, but its worse than the last time I went about 10 years ago. Glad you both enjoyed the positive bits from Scarborough. Best Tim

They were built like that Tim, including the Grand, the engine room ie services is below ground. Laundry, kitchen, staff rooms etc. Maximise the above ground levels with windows for guests. They've done the South Cliff gardens up, new paths, railings, flower beds, restored the Italian gardens, the rose garden is all brand new, the clock tower has been restored, all the shelters have been restored, the tunnel under the cliff tram has been reopened, the Spa has been done up, it all looks good, another month Tim, I shall be there, because I can take my Jack Russell on the beach again 👍

There is a conspiracy theory claiming these buildings existed long before they claim to be built and they were buried in ash or mud. I have seen some convincing videos from abroad, especially Rome which was uncovered in the 1930s, but as I go through their claims in Sheffield I have photographic evidence to debunk it. What is the tunnel you are talking about in South Bay Richard? Cheers Tim

@@timawells I think they were built in Scarboroughs heyday, 1860ish onwards, when the railway reached Scarborough everything took off, before that it was a fishing village, the Victorians made it a seaside resort, people claim the buildings have sunk, but I'm to be convinced, how would one building let alone an entire block or street, sink evenly? They have all got basements with windows in I suppose to get some light in. The tunnel is under the cliff tram at the spa, it takes the footpath underneath the track Tim.

That must have been the Cliff lift I missed Richard, must have been past the Spa. I will get next time I visit, but next time I am going when deserted too busy for me in summer and hopefully decent fish and chips next time. @@richardburns5925

Woh memory lane lol. I stayed at Esplanade a (long( while back. I recall reading it was grade 2 listed in 70's? Originally built in mid 1800s as a row of separate houses for the well to do, not as a hotel. I can only presumably the lower floors without a nice views were there for the servant classes, kitchens etc...

Made me wonder if houses just for the well off, but I thought there was too many not to be hotels Phil.

What magnificent buildings there are there, we so much need to look after them, as you say why can't we build them like that now. I don't think they would ever achieve the same quality using their cheap and nasty modern day materials, they would also be too expensive to build now as maximum profit always seems to dominate their decisions. Perhaps the under ground level floors were used for staff accommodation and storage, they all seem to have it. Great to see "The Royal" again, I took the wife and young family for a flying visit there 20 years ago, we should have spent longer to look at those other buildings too. Many thanks for showing us around.

Sheffield buildings look like Lego land, they used to build splendid buildings that lasted. Even our town hall was extended in the 1920s and 100 years later they can't build the same quality.

Hi Tim. That building that you show at 6:26 in the video on the esplanade with the Buddha on the second floor balcony on the corner belonged to Jimmy Saville It’s where his mother used to live The path that you walked up to get to it was known as Savilles view but was abruptly changed fir obvious reasons

Thank you for enlightening me. I have heard about Savilles connections with the ice cream business owner there. Didn't Saville come from nobility?

7:12 that concrete semi- circle with the railings around it was the old swimming pool.. and if you look further up those rocks that are used for sea defences around that patch of grass is where a hotel fell into the sea in 1993 I forget the name of the hotel though.. p.s nice lil waves that day, I’m a Scarborough surfer lol
