When a teenager (started between junior and senior year in high school) I worked in dangerous oil field as a rough neck (and did so in summers between college years) - because it paid very well. And used the money to buy audiophile grade equipment. This song has always been a pleasure to listen to on such gear.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️
True story. This happened this past Monday. A customer came up to my seafood counter. She had on this dress that was kinda flowing in the air and I said "You make me think of a line from a song." She said what song and said year of the cat. She had never heard of it and asked what line was it and I said " She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like the water running in the rain." She said "Oh my God that's so beautiful! Then I just recited the entire first lyrics and she asked me the name of the song again and who sung it. She immediately goggled it and started listening to it. She loved it and thanked me for telling her about it. Im 65 she was probably 32-34. I said no problem and said you missed alot of great music!
Man. 1983, headed back to school on a Sunday night about a 6 hr drive..I made a cassette tape …just recorded a local community college jazz station, and this song was the last one I recorded. I remember jamming to that cassette all the way back to school..great memories!
This song makes me want to put a headphone and walk through the park on a rainy day, aimlessly... One of the best songs ever written. Thanks, Al Stewart. From Brazil.

Grateful too growing up in the 70s and college in the 80s; certainly a time with its challenges-but we approached it with optimis, hope and some feeling of togetherness.. unlike today's despair and selfishness.
One of the best instrumental sections of a song ever! the writer of that instrumental section where it goes from guitar to electric guitar to saxophone is absolutely brilliant. that transfer to the saxophone takes my breath away every time I hear it.
My late husband and I used to love to listen to this song cuddled in bed. We enjoyed listing to music together and remembering the old days. His favorite cologne was Patchouli too. Smelled so nice on him. Such beautiful memories. Still can’t believe we won’t have those nights again 😢
Hard to believe this song turns 47 years old in 2 weeks......the memories are overwhelming me right now....a better time and better life, and much better music!
This, and 'Baker Street' by Gerry Rafferty define a certain excellence in atmosphere and a certain sense of a snapshot of time during the mid to late 1970s.
Yeah it's weird that songs do that. But everyone's "atmosphere" that they relate to the song must be different, yet somehow somewhat the same, too. I wonder if more recent eras, people will look back on with less yearning and nostalgia because so much of it has been recorded because of the internet & cell phones? The 70s, 80s and 90s have a kind of veiled nostalgia because we didn't have as many ways of preserving events & moments so well...we have to rely on our own memories. What do you think?
They make me think of a rainy 🌙 night. Where the lights from the headlights and traffic signals, reflect their warm street colors into the streets, on a summer night. 🌟 🐅
Met Peter White at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga CA where I was living back in the late 90s ....he signed my CD and drew me a pic of his guitar...those were the days 🦁💖
Al Stewart composed a beautiful arrangement of instrumentals piano, solo guitar and saxophone, wonderfully crafted musicians, even in 2022 this song is a standout.

God... they just don't do it like that anymore. Music now is so... empty, but that song is just, well... full. There's so much there and it all comes together to make one of my most treasured musical memories.
Music is subjective, what sounds empty to you may sound extremely fruitful to someone else. Music being empty today is a bad take because there are artists who dump their soul into their music, but there are some who don't. There are empty songs out there but lets not generalize.

One of my all time favorite songs. What a Masterpiece. I was 13 years old when this came out. Everybody loved it. A huge hit, and still stands the test of time today!
Me too, I was the same age. Al Stewart's music is so underrated. All of his albums are great, and this one and Time Passages are classics. His songs and his lyrics are so interesting and even historical, not just cheap love music or senseless gibberish.
I'm 7 years old sitting the back of my Dad's white station wagon and I hear this song constantly on the radio. Something about it, even as a kid, something about the lyrics. Who is this mysterious woman he sings of and in what part of the world does this song take place in? These are questions I had at 7 and I have now at 54. Everything about this song is perfect, the lyrical poetry, the musicianship, the feeling that I'm going on an adventure when I listen to this song. It is just such a cool, cool, song.
I like the idea that Al played the guitar in this song. Most people just sing with a band. But Al was a guitar player and was one of the best. I remember in the beginning of 77 I heard it all the time. year of the cat, OMG.

When I was an undergrad in geology (way back in the 1970s), Al Stewart stood out as one of the more memorable talents of that decade. During our six-week summer field camp in the Big Bend of Texas and in the high mountains of New Mexico, we heard Stewart's songs every evening, after a long day in the field. I remember listening to Stewart as I prepared for the evening exercises while I relaxed with a very cold beer.
@Mark Schultz Most songs are lacking in quality of their lyrics but this song has a story with evocative lyrics. My only complaint is it takes about a half minute to get to them.
Anyone involved in the production of a melodic masterpiece like this deserves the utmost respect and not a little envy. Oh to have been a part of it... Wonderful memories come flooding back every time I hear it.

What a beautiful piece of Art! The piano harmonies, the sweeping orchestral violins, the guitar & sax solos ... and the cherry on top ... Al Stewart!!!

I guess the question is ... will any generation stop feeling that which is "Nostalgia" ?
There are times when I can hardly bear to listen to this ... the memories are so intense.
Same here ....I feel like crying but what for I have no idea ! ♡
im crying right now

It's nostalgia. A powerful drug with serious side effects.

Intoxicating 😍👏👏
Totally agree, something you would like is Pink Floyd "Final Cut" . Transition from Roger's voice to saxophone.
That sucker was COMPOSED. We took artistry for granted so often then, because it kept coming every single day. And now it's a kind of wasteland.
Still gives me goosebumps after all these years!
I’ve always said this as well. It’s simply beautiful.

Same producer? No, but Hugh Murphy and Alan Parsons had a very similar style.
I would add Rod Stewart's "Killing of Georgie (pts. 1 and 2)" to make it a trifecta :)
