  • Are you thinking of relocating, going to school, or just moving to Prince George, British Columbia? Let me show you around this cool northern community. In this video, I'll take you on a tour of some of the neighbourhoods, we'll check out the shopping, malls, restaurants, hotels and the downtown area. Making a decision to move to a new community isn't easy, but I hope to be able to help you get an idea of what to expect if you do make the move to Prince George. As a bonus, I'll take you for a little drive up the highway to check out the area of Prince George that they call The Hart.

I was born in Prince George in 1961. I graduated at PGSS in 1979.
Prior to the PG Cougars, we were entertained by the PG Mohawks of the Caribou Hockey League and the PG Spruce Kings at the PG Coliseum.
Prior to the new library, the old library was on fourth avenue across from Kresge’s. At one time, the largest library in PG was at CNC.
There was a time when “The Odeon” on third avenue was the only movie theatre. Spruceland and Parkwood soon followed.
Prior to the new RCMP station, the old police station was in the Kresge’s building.
Prior to the new Courthouse, the old MacDonald Hotel was there.
At one time, PG boasted the largest disco dance floor in Canada at the Midnight Express Discotheque. Montreal was a distant second.
There was a time when the Old Fraser Bridge and the Old Nechako Bridge were the only two bridges in PG.
Prior to the current location of PGSS, Duchess Park High School was PGSS’s old location.
There was a time when you needed to drive through the Blackburn subdivision on the old Giscome Road to travel to Jasper.
I remember when Pine Center Mall was built. Woolco and Sears were the biggest stores.
Prior to PCM, two shopping malls existed.
    1. Spruceland Shopping Center with Safeway, Overwaitea, Stedman’s, and smaller stores.
    2. Parkwood Shopping Center with Woodward’s and smaller stores.
There was also an Eaton’s store and a Kresge’s store (my favorite).
I remember only two AM radio stations namely, CKPG 550 and CJCI 620. FM radio wasn’t available. I also remember when we had only one TV station. BCTV arrived in the late sixties. Also, Saturday morning cartoons became a wonderful experience with the arrival of cablevision.
Prior to McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, we had one Tastee-Freeze, one small Dairy Queen, one Dog’n’Suds, and two A&W’s.
Multiculturalism was very important in Prince George. “Folklorama” was an annual event held at Ft. George park.
I’ve been absent from PG over forty-three years. Your video brought a nostalgic tear. Thank you.
If you would like more background on PG, please feel free to ask.

Some things most don’t know about PG it is the second largest city in northern Canada after Edmonton. There are several areas of the city where you can literally walk out of your home and be in nature and it’s not uncommon to see bears and moose even in downtown. PG has the lowest cost of living out of every major city in BC and it is also the only major city in BC to be in a snow belt so it’s not uncommon to get 15-30cm of snow during a snow storm.

    Something of small interest…
When we talk about fast food, there were three major chicken restaurants.
    1. The first KFC was located at 15th Avenue and Highway 97 at Central Plaza.
    2. Red Hen was located at the corner of Victoria Street and 20th Avenue (kitty-corner from the first Dairy Queen and the old Connaught Jr. Sec School). At that time, Victoria Street ended at 20th Avenue.
    3. Brownies Fried Chicken was located on 15th Avenue and Johnson Street (right across from the KFC).

Duchess Park playground is on the sight of the oldest high school that existed in the Prince George area. Sadly, it was removed and a new one built just a few steps east of the playground.
The schools are so big because many children are bussed in from the surrounding areas outside of city limits. Just so you know that the Hart area is inside city limits.

I would love to see some more local business and less corporations as well as improved road work. I didn't notice the smell people talk about at all but I did feel like hey this isn't a small town. @TinagirlTravels  Před 3 lety +3

I don’t live there personally, but my adult kids do. They moved up for work and I go up to visit. My perspective is as an outsider and it’s a good way to look at a place, with fresh eyes. My kids really have nothing negative to say about PG, the smell I hear is worse in the “bowl” as they call it. I’ve never actually smelled it and I’ve been there many many times at all times of the year. PG has come a long way and as more people relocate into this city with new vision, I believe this city is going to be the place to live. If you love the outdoors, it’s fantastic, walking trails, wildflowers, wildlife, parks, fishing, you can’t beat it!

People here are very kind. Especially if you live on the Hart. Downsides are high rents, the pulp mill smell sometimes and a corrupt police force and judges. The biggest upside for me is that it's not a rat race. People here are very down to earth. I've lived in a lot of different cities and this one is closest to my heart. May I ask you couple questions , please. I am just exploring possibilities of relocating to more affordable BC cities..Many comments on Reddit and Quora warn about "redneck" mentality and rampant crime in PG,but how much of it is still true in 2021? Also, you said PG Downtown was not totally there yet and you think it would develop in the future....but according to Tripadvisor and Google, PG already seems to have lots of unique excellent quality restaurants and eateries in the central area..seems like there is a vibe to it..is it not like that ?is Downtown PG a safe place to live in or to go to at all??

    • @Moniyaw55
      @Moniyaw55 Před 2 lety

Also as far as the downtown it is fully developed if you only look at where you can go/different types of foods/recreational activities but the look is that of a more older downtown I think Tina missed what she meant to say a little bit there and where she meant it’s not a new recently billion dollar downtown like Vancouver or Calgary or Kelowna but the part of it that is coming In progress would be the renovations of buildings with the new luxury hotel being built and new police station being built and things of that nature..

Hi Nikki, I don’t know anything about Prince Rupert. If you are thinking of moving to Prince George, they seem to have a decent bussing system you can check out. If I were moving there without a car, I would live near the mall and shopping just to make life easiest.

Born and raised in PG......Very lonely place to grow up in..lots of fist fights, helps keep the gossips down. Nobody in my school want to stay in PG upon graduating (duchess park secondary ) because nothing you do here matters.. Not a good place if you are a visibly minority .
Prepare to be attack by mosquitoes in the dark they are big and can bite though thin clothes

Thanks for sharing your story, middle and high school are rough years for so many kids no matter where they grow up. I love your honesty, and I wish you an amazing and successful future. PG is going through a transformation not unlike many smaller communities around the province. I bet you won’t recognize it in 10 years. Hopefully the city recognizes the needs of its youth and finds ways to support the next generation. Best of luck to you Daniel.

The part time service and retail industry is 24/7 in demand and with many companies and corporations incentivizing hiring international students these days it would not be hard to find a job at all, but it would be hard to find what some call a good job most jobs you would find easily would be fast food or retail stores in a mall
