Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 | Rise & Drive | PistonHeads

  • How seriously did Chevrolet take the fifth generation Camaro Z/28? Well, it equipped it with a 7.0-litre LS7 V8 and used the Porsche 911 GT3 as a handling yardstick. Reason enough for Dan P to get up at dawn and take it to South Wales...

    When the Z28 was introduced here in the states, in 1969, it came with a little 302 cid engine that reved to the moon. For the late 60's, its handling capabilities was ahead of its time. In American cars anyway. The early Z28's weren't very fast at all for straight line drag racing, when compared to the popular muscle cars of the day. Like the Chevelle SS or even the Camaro SS. But on a autocross track, with the new suspension, along with being able to easily wind them out to 8,000 or 8,500 RPM, they were fast. Detroit was cranking out cars back then, to go as fast as possible, in a straight line. Then with the tiny, narrow, bias ply tires that came on them, and the body roll, you had to slow down to a near crawl just to get around a curve. Lol. I just got a 1995 Z28 a couple weeks back, with the factory LT1 350. The former owner tore it down, had the block line honed, and the cylinder heads shaved and polished, along with a pretty aggressive camshaft, back in 2013. He drove it about 2500 miles, and blew a head gasket. So he just parked it. It sat there in the same spot on the lawn, from 2013 until 2 weeks ago, when i went and picked it up. He put the car on the dyno, and it layed down 421 hp to the wheels. Which is impressive, using the factory block and heads. Considering how brand new, they were only rated at 275 hp at the crank. Which i estimate would have probably only been about 220 or 225 hp to the wheels. Ive got big plans for it, like swapping out the 4L60E automatic transmission, for a T56 six speed that is in the car you have here. That, and a complete Stage 2 QA1 Performance suspension along with a Ford 9". It still has its stock 10 bolt rear end in it that works fine usually for and automatic transmission, but are notorious for breaking, after a few clutch dumping launches with a manual. I'm excited to get it finished.

      The Z/28 was introduced in 1966 for the 1967 model year. It was equipped with the 5 liter, 302 cubic inches, for the SCCA road race series. Chevrolet had to build at least 500 for public sale to qualify. It only came with a 4 speed, power front disc brakes, a posi rear. Power steering was optional, no AC. Over 7,000 were built in 1968 and 20,000 in 1969 on the 1st generation.

    Nice review and love seeing these cars being enjoyed outside of the U.S. I have a 2015 and from time to time have thought about selling it. I used to daily drive it and put 41k miles on it, but no longer daily drive it and seems a bit impractical to have it sitting in my garage 80% of the time. However, I can't bring myself to let it go because its truly special in every way.

    The Z28 is definitely a cool car and a possible classic in the making! You asked a very interesting question, why are we letting cars like this disappear? Unfortunately, many people don't want to learn how to drive a manual, it seems many are apprehensive and unwilling. The buyers are the reason why these cars are disappearing. The magical recipe of a great sports car which was rear wheel drive, manual transmission, front or rear engine and the open road has now become a bunch of hype with 0-60 times, track lap times, and how fast your double clutch transmission can shift. The pleasure of driving has been forgotten or is unrealized by many "car" enthusiast out there. Thanks for the great video, keep up the good work!

In my last video on the C5 Z06, I had to point out how Porsche felt compelled to make a video of how to pronounce Por-sche to us americans, but then people in Europe insist on saying Zed-oh six or Zed-twenty eight. what makes me scratch my head is........they used carbon ceramics on the Z/28 but not on the ZL1 1LE that makes 145hp more

    • @tylercouture216
      @tylercouture216 Před 4 lety

      Not nothing scratch your head at the z/28 is track specific the zl1 #1 priority is to go fast the z/28 #1 priority is to be tracked hard

    • @twinturbo3470

      @@tylercouture216 The ZL1 1LE wouldn't have all that aero if it wasn't meant to be a track car. Thats the whole point to the 1LE package. They are both track car with the same Multi Matic suspension setup and R compound tires.....see what I'm getting at

      @Th3Aggr3ssiv3 Cons3rvativ3 I agree......automakers and customers are realizing that Carbon Ceramic brakes are over kill(especially for street use). Cast Iron do a damn good job if cooled properly. BUT Carbon ceramic are damn cool

      Twin Turbo a friend has a 15 Z/28 and he learned real quick about how worthless the carbon brakes are when they are cold. Lucky for him we live in the middle of nowhere with no traffic around when he was going over 100 and tried to stop.

    They built too many to keep the used prices up in North America. Twice too many I’d say.

    I think the Miles per Gallon figures were omitted, But 1700kg is a big car, I was thinking how modern car have house appliances(CCTV, 4 TV with HD and Wifi , heated seats, massaging seats, fridges and sensors ) in them and that 's why they feel num to drive , this has no household appliance and weighs 1700kg that's a big girl but love the Rise & Drive series, lol youtubes sleeping on this channel

    Your only bouncing so much and saying its way to stiff because you don't have a harness installed haha, once the harness is in you will feel how much of a difference and planted it feels in the corners bro
