Backpacking the Enchantments - Summiting Dragontail - Episode 4

  • It's day three and we have made camp in the Lower Core Zone at Lake Inspiration. And with the continuation of amazing weather Jen, her brother and I set out to tackle our largest mountain ever, Dragontail Peak. It's not the fastest route, it's not the easiest route, but it is the least technical and safest for our level of gear and experience. So off we go.
    Background: It's September 2016, Jen and I won a Core Zone permit from the Enchantments Lottery. We booked five nights/six days with a full crew of eight hikers and set out from the Snow Lakes Trail Head.
    These videos are an intro as to what to expect if you too are backpacking the Enchantments. If you are planning on hiking/backpacking the Enchantments, please do more research than what you see here. This is an amazing and life threatening area, proceed at your own risk.

    Epic journey! These lakes are incredible! To see them from above is just amazing. This is why we climb these rocks: to take these rare scenes forever in our minds. See you at the next trailhead!

      We've been the last 4 years, in varying conditions and zones. Hard to get tired of the most beautiful place in Washington. :)

    Love your video. Mostly love the advice at the end about learning the proper skills before attempting adventures like this, especially with today's "Instagram effect". With being a social media presence comes being responsible and sending the right message about safety and I think this video did that really well.

    Another great video. That trip would have sucked to do it with all the smoke from the B.C. fires. You lucked out big time

    Great video dude. You must be a bomb ass climber, doing those scrambles with only one hand and the other holding a camera. You were dedicated to the shot. I’m going to the enchantments for the first time this summer, and have found your videos invaluable

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been watching the Enchantments videos over the last couple of weekends and they are just great. Truly spectacular. Nick, after hours of pouring over maps of the Cascades, I really appreciate that you point out the lakes and peaks. Thanks you guys! Nick, where do we go to view your stills of The Enchantments?

      Thank you Brian, I am happy to hear these are helping you out. And it seems you have found my blog. I still need to process and post the photos from this Enchantments trip. But as you might have seen, there are Enchantment photos from our previous trip. :)

    This is quite stunning Nick and Jen! I've probably said this before, but you brilliantly showcase the beauty and interest of PNW hiking. Is the Enchantments area your favourite, or is it unfair to make such comparisons? Also pleased to see that your subscription base is increasing quite rapidly - fully deserved :-) Your channel has been a revelation to me, based as I am near the Peak District in the UK. You also seem to get excellent Summer weather for hiking, or has this just been a particularly sunny Summer in your region?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  Před 7 lety +2

      You are more than welcome! The Enchantments is very close to the top. But it's a unique place. There are many more unique places in Washington that get us excited. Our Summer is very short. And it's some of the best weather in the states (maybe aside from Alaska). We have to make use of it because the other nine months are filled with rain.

    Wow! Another great video. Wonder how long it took to get back to camp.

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  Před 7 lety +1

      It was much quicker since we knew the route. Just had to put in the grid to get back over that ridge. We did take a look going down the icefield, but without crampons and no ice axe we decided against it.

    This whole area use to be a magma chamber that got pushed up and eventually eroded. You are almost walking on eons...flirting with eternity.

    Places like these in Washington looks like Patagonia. It is true? Thera are a lot of similarities?

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff  Před 6 lety +2

      It is true. A lot of granite rock and big faces. Of course Patagonia is more magnificent. :)

    I just don’t get why all these nature loving CZcamsrs want to make these videos of already massively overcrowded and fragile places. Let people find it on their own.
