Michael Hartman actually the metrodome had a way better baseball field than this. I looked up the dimensions of the baseball field inside Alamodome and it is quite like the old Baker Bowl in Philadelphia (except shorter right up the middle). That, and being indoors with a capacity for baseball of just a few hundred less than our old Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Definitely not BC Place or the HHH Metronome, but suitable for temporary use for baseball, basketball, arena and Stadium concerts, as well as a more permanent use for soccer or American football.

Granted the right field wall isn't far enough, but for a temporary venue for MLB exhibition games before the season starts, its okay... The Alamodome was built to be the football stadium for UTSA, but has failed to attract a NFL team. Too small for the NFL, but too big for UTSA. For a while it was the venue for the San Antonio Spurs NBA, while its been used for hockey, soccer, baseball, and rodeo... Basically a multi-purpose dome venue... If San Antonio ever landed a NFL or MLB franchise San Antonio would have to build a new stadium, but could use the Alamodome as a temporary venue until a new stadium is built. Most likely new locker rooms/clubhouses for a major league teams would have to be added... San Antonio could knock down the seating bowl beyond the right field fence to increase its size if necessary to please MLB...

Such an illusion. This configuration is a TINY field.... not just in right field. It's just that the distance to RF is so small it makes the CF and LF dimensions look expansive. Thing is.... this field is about the same size as my high school field was. It's a pathetic 280 feet to right field. Despite looking deep as hell, it's only 395 to that corner in dead center. And in LF it's a moderate 340 feet.... which is on the small side of the spectrum as far as pro baseball is concerned. It's hard to believe this place hosts MLB games once in a while.... granted usually spring training games, but still. The Dodgers and Rangers played there in 2015 during that year's spring games. The Dodgers hit 3 HRs in the first inning.... yeah. It's puzzling too. I mean it's a very.... VERY pathetic 280 feet to right. But look at all that foul territory down the third base line. If they'd just slide the whole infield toward the side where this camera is set up they could conceivably add about 20-30 feet to the RF dimensions while still maintaining a decent amount of foul territory down the 3B line. I mean just sliding that infield 20 feet toward us (the viewer) would make the RF dimensions a less of a joke, but still a joke nonetheless, at 300 feet even while maintaining the LF dimensions. I don't know. It's clearly not a place designed for baseball, that's for sure, but it just seems like they could alter the placement and angle of that infield to maximize the overall dimensions to a better degree if you ask me.

The reason the home plate is so far out is because of sight lines from the upper seating. the first year it was pushed back and people couldn't see.
Realistcally the 2 games played here are just so fans from another city can get a chance to see the rangers play a game.

@@Ben-xp4gu The exhibition games that are played here at the end of spring training is to bring the Rangers or the Astros fans that live in Central Texas a MLB game to attend without having to fly or drive to Arlington or Houston several hours away... The combined metros of San Antonio and Austin is approaching SIX million, far too many for the Rangers and Astros to ignore... The Rangers have never drawn 3 million for one season, a goal they do desire to do, every fan attending a MLB game in Arlington from Central Texas is welcomed...

It was never intended for baseball. The minor league team has their own outdoor stadium, but it only seats about 9000 which was too small for the major league exhibition games, so they used the dome instead. The crowds for each of these games in San Antonio were surprisingly big.
