  • The Housemaid (1960) is a film from Korea that many have said is the biggest influence on Korean cinema of today. Bong Joon Ho has said that this is film is a major influence / inspired the movie Parasite (2019). In watching "The Housemaid" you can see how Korea built up a great tradition of thrillers with films such as Old Boy, The Handmaiden, Lady Vengeance, and I Saw the Devil with this classical Hitchcock style Thriller as it's foundation. This movie also made me think that the Korean style that many filmmakers tend to have of prioritizing metaphor over realism is something that originated with this classic film. The film the Housemaid by Kim Ki-young is a great movie and one all film lovers and all Asian film lovers should definitely explore. This review was done on location in Busan Korea, as I am traveling now I want to explore a new style of reviews: travel vlog movie reviews!

Dalkomhan insaeng (A bittersweet life) is a very interesting, compact, and little reviewed film. The great Lee Byenhon relatively early in his career.

You're in for a treat! He is my favorite Korean director. Secret Sunshine, Peppermint Candy, and Burning are my favorites. Love your channel btw, been watching for a while. First discovered you through your review of Rebels of the Neon God! Still one of my all time favorites. I then recommended that you check out The Terrorizers by Edward Yang, only to find that you already had a review! @@MintVolcano

Thank for the recommendation, I was watching a lot of Korean film recently and that's exactly what I was needed 🙂
I also agree with what you said about Taiwanese cinema, I feel like a lot of movies are trying to replicate the Taiwanese new wave (in that regard Taiwanese cinema is similar to Israeli cinema).
Anyway, I'm coming to visit Taiwan soon, can't wait!
Is there and filmmaker-must-visit places you'd recommend?

That’s a good question, in terms of movie theaters check out some of the art house cinemas. I would say that the Kaoshuing film archive down south is my favorite and I think traveling to Southern Taiwan is a must to look at the scenery and to meet some real Taiwanese characters 😊

@@MintVolcano Thanks for the Tip :-) I've been to the south in my previous 2 visits and loved it. this time the south plan to go is Tainan and I set a goal to explore Nanto in this visit. It would be cool to grab a drink if feel like talking about cinema, I'll be very curious to hear how it's like to immigrate to Taiwan and start working in video and cinema (as an immigrant to Germany we might have some things in common)

I thought it inspired 2010 movie starring Lee Jung-jae also called The Housemaid. I will check out the 1960s one but I found 2010 one unpleasant and disturbing. That's the point of the film.
    **Spolier**
It was also errie because a friend had one day told me in 2011 that his landlady's live-in maid set herself on fire after having a tumultuous affair with the son of the family.
Edit: The maid's decision to end her life may seem dramatic and unreal from western perspective but Asia is different. There is thousands of years of misogyny and sexism. On one hand a woman is reduced to a dependent person who cannot go through life without men and on the other are also criticised to gain from their sexual influence. This sparks frustration and helplessness. In my country it is still not uncommon for women to take such extreme steps after failing in a relationship.
