    Granted that there were quite a few of the dink shots that made UCI some points on both nights, but there is a reason that UCI hasn't beaten any teams in the top 5. If that is their best attack on their offense, they depend on it too much to make a difference. Over time, the points will go to the more offensive aggressive team and in this case it was Hawaii. UH has more weapons and the key is Thelle who can give UH more attack options no matter who is in front. Hope they fill the stands for next weekend for Senior Night and especially Thelle who I think without him they would not have won the past 2 National Championships and hopefully they can bring home a 3rd consecutive one.

      Yeah there is absolutely no reason for pin hitters who are that tall and have such good arm swings to feel the need to push the ball over that often. They should basically be able to always smash the ball down. The connection between them and the setter just isn’t there.

      I think it’s worth mentioning that UCI has way better defense than Hawaii as evident by how often they were able to dig Hawaii’s attacks (it also doesn’t help that Hawaii’s hitters are hitting the ball directly to the defenders instead of aiming it elsewhere and making them work for the ball). They also have smart players with guys like Henno and Sani who change it up instead of just slamming it all the time, such as tipping or roll shot it into the far corner where no one is. In fact, they made Hawaii look foolish by how many times they were able to tip the ball over them for the kill, and by how many times they were able to fool Voss into jumping with the middle for the back row player to score. When was the last time you saw Hawaii tip the ball unforced, and tipped it successfully? I wish Hawaii would do what other teams do and make combination plays more often. Yes, Hawaii does have more weapons. The problem is that Thelle rarely ever uses them. He used to incorporate the middle and bic a lot into their arsenal. Now he hardly does and instead heavily relies on the pins. Of course it doesn’t help when Chakas keeps clipping the net when he attacks from the back but still it would be better for Thelle to use all the weapons instead of just some.

      @@locomojoboy2 I think we have very different reads on the match. UCI’s players tipped the ball over so many times because they were FORCED to, the opposite of what you said. Tipping is cool every now and then, but doing it as many times as they did in a row? Clearly they were uncomfortable with the sets they were getting. My perspective on the digs, which was a natural conclusion seeing the outcome of the match, is that Hawaii were just that much more successful attacking the other side of the net, whereas UCI had significantly more attacking errors and a nonexistent block to stop the ball from reaching their defenders. If it were me I would start by swapping Sani’s and Henno’s positions. I get that Sani is their best attacker so they want him on the right, but if both of them are uncomfortable hitting the ball it is all for moot anyway.

      @@Downypour I should clarify when I said unforced I was referring to bad sets that are way off from its mark that the hitter has no choice but to tip it over. I think what Sani and Henno did with their tips was smart because even if Hawaii’s triple block forced them not to blast it through due to lack of straight line options, etc., they made perfect tips that landed right behind them due to everyone being all spread out and leaving gaping holes on the court. And Hawaii kept falling for it, just like they did when Penn St and UCLA did the same.

      @Downypour Před rokem +4

      @@locomojoboy2 I should clarify myself; I agree that smart tips are a good way to change up your attacks, but the amount of times UCI’s TOP hitters did them leads you to believe their connection with their setter is poor. I’m not arguing that they had bad tips, I’m saying that doing them consistently is weaker, but they were forced to do so anyway.

    Francisco Sani reminds me a lot of Kyle Russell from the USA national team. The mustache, build, height, position, he is truly the second coming!

    It is SOOOOO refreshing to finally hear someone not only sing the National Anthem very well, but sing it CORRECTLY. No diva embellishments, no double crescendos, no singing up the scale when you should be going down, etc. Just singing the National Anthem the way it’s supposed to be sung, and having the voice to do it justice. Hope they continue to have talent like him perform, or just use an instrumental recording instead.
    And I don’t know what’s been going on with Charlie, but he’s been making some very dumb challenge calls as of late. I remember he used to have such a good challenge record, but lately he’s been making very emotional challenges that he’s clearly going to lose, or that will give him no real advantage. Like why the hell would you ever waste a challenge on the very first point of the game? It won’t make a bit of difference in the end. It also doesn’t help that his players won’t fess up and admit they touched the net and save him from wasting a challenge, and that they too make emotional requests that convinces Charlie to challenge calls that was clearly their own fault, like Chakas does all the time. Charlie really needs to stop using his challenges so emotionally, and use them more strategically.

    57:41 -- I remember the call was that Doug Dahm #7 hit the ball 2x in a row & UCI was challenging that saying there was only 1 touch. The foot way over the line seems to be the infraction that was ruled upon.

      You can kinda hear the conversation with the R1 saying “that ball’s not going over” so I figured that there’s no way they can do anything without committing an error.

      No, I'm not. I'm new to this scene and learning about the legend of 808. I lived abroad for many years and appreciated the efforts of people like UH Volleyball Fan, so I'm trying to keep things going. I don't know what will happen, but anyway...I'm glad if people (esp those out of state) can enjoy the games and support our teams
