- It's not about the size of the hamster, it's about how much enrichment they need in order to be kept stimulated to stop boredom and create a happy thriving hamster. Having only a wheel, hideout, food & water is not properly caring for your hamster.
It's not just their bedroom, you're creating their entire world
FOR REALL (god 100 likes on a reply?) thanks tho
Yes!
Aww so true!
If you would fight for the pig, the cow and the chicken you are eating in the same way, it would be great. They have much less space for their whole life like this hamster. Usually, pigs/ cows cannot even turn around or lay down all at the same time.
THIS
Putting a hamster in a cage that small is like a person living in a broom closet
My cousin lives in a pantry literally her bedroom is the pantry next to the kitchen 😂😂

Clearly Victoria proved that small cages shouldn’t even been created in the first place!!!💗🐹
They can be great for emergency travel to have on hand though 🫶🏻 during the California wildfires I had to figure out what to do with my animals quickly to get them out of danger
@@madisonhernandez1757 Yes, but the issue is that they're being advertised and sold as legitimate forever homes for hamsters, not for transport. They make their money by selling to uneducated people.
@@lavishlyvice I for sure agree! I was simply replying to the sentiment that they *not* should exist at all
@@madisonhernandez1757 Oh yeah, I can agree with that for sure
@donner9154 i used to work at pet store and we had those cages. I explicitly said to people that those cages are only for emergency if the animal is sick and needs to be in different cage from other animals for short period of time but people still bought those as "proper cages" even tho they were not even cheaper. I even witnessed someone buying this small transport plastic box for a gerbil. Then I refused to sell the animal to them but they went to another pet store and bought it there saying the box is only for transport...
Great message! I hope this will change some peoples mind about hamster care.
I don’t have a hamster yet, but im saving up and I can’t wait to get one! These videos have helped me know what to do, and convinced me that im not ready to get one yet. Thank you so much!!!
Edit: I didn’t realize I have so many likes, lol
have you gotten one yet?
@@thepestilence5796 not yet, because im not sure that I can consistently pay for it, so im just waiting 😊
@@Treat_eater_Quincy alright 👍🏻
yay!! i’m so proud of you reslly taking the time to see if you really want one instead of just impulsively buying one thinking “oh well it’s such a small anaimal this will have to do”
@@ashhhhyyyyyy3980 right now im pretty sure I do want one, but I don’t have the money, and more time to think about it isn’t a bad thing ❤️
Same with birds. I have two parakeets and they have a massive cage. They need big cages to be able to fly around when they are not out to get exercise. My birds are constantly chasing each other around my cage and having fun bc THEY HAVE ROOM! A tiny bird cage cannot sustain the lifestyle a bird needs. And before I chose birds as my pet. I was gonna get a hamster and I did a bunch of research on them so I know what they need too. I love your cage design. I'm sure your hamster loves it! ❤️ Thank you for being a good pet owner 😁
!!!
My grandma made a whole house aviary for my 24 birds
@@GoldenGinto You have 24 birds that literally insanely awesome!!!!
@@GoldenGintobirds as pets is unethical to begin with.
This!!! Except it really depends on how often ur birds are out. My birds cage is a good size but she is only in it for sleeping and is usually out in my room or wherever!
I had a hamster as a kid, before the internet was mainstream and he lived in a cage like this. I feel so guilty for not doing better.
I’m really grateful you’re educating people, hopefully people stop these practices
Same!! Its so bad :( the pet shop are often not good in caring for the animals... and that is where you would get your knowledge back then! No wonder my hamster always tried to escape!...
To be fair, the pet store probably told you it was fine.
God wants us to be the caretakers of animals!

Same, not hamsters for me but the way my parents took care of the cats. :( I was a kid and didn't know better but i still feel bad...
Thank you so much for this video Victoria!

You have inspired me so much! My hamster Sushi just passed away and I’m planning on getting one or two other hamster next month. Because of you I can feel at peace knowing Sushi lived an amazing life!
So happy people are finally starting to value the life of small pets. They are creatures with ONE habitat so it should be wonderful!! My Pac-Man frog does nothing but sit in one spot in the dirt all year round, but she has a 40 gallon tank that I designed to look like rock waterfalls with bio active substrate and live plants. She’s so happy!! Little creatures deserve just as much love and respect as cats and dogs.
Why does she need a 40 gallon tank to sit in the same dirt spot all year round?
@@TomikaKelly she actually chooses a different spot every few weeks!!
Companies that make these and ignore people like you who say it’s not okay sicken me.
A friend of mine had a whole room for ONE small chubby angy hamster called Totoro, that hanster lived so long i swear, and it was so much fun giving him a treat and watching him go wild in his mansion, be a good pet owner! They will thank u.
Love this so much. I love how you are encouraging the correct hamster care. Thank you so much. My hamster, Grizzly, passed away after a long 2 years of living. Fortunately, I watched your videos and got a 60 gallon tank with 9 inches of bedding and so much enrichment. Thank you so much for helping my hamster have the best life possible ❤

Finally someone's talking about these horrible cages
I upgraded my hamster to a 600 square inch cage and still want a larger one... when he was in the smaller one I knew it was too small for him but couldn't afford a larger one, I saved up my money and finally bought him a larger cage, more substrates, sprays, and lots of hideouts for enrichment. That you Victoria, you saved us ❤❤
I love these videos so much and some pet stores really don’t care about the products they sell, it’s only for the money they make from those bad products 😢

Absolutely agree animals even hamsters deserve all the enrichment and good life. People dont have a clue what they need if their buying this
My dawaf hamster lives in a much bigger cage than we were told he needed and I love that he's able to run around and burrow all he wants
Thank you for making this!!! All hamster owners need to know this!!!
My sister bought an IKEA glass bookshelf, uses the shelves as roof panels instead, has various bedding types and a sandy area and branches and everything.
That things like 6ft X 30cm.
She still wants to make a square one by hand so PomPom can have deeper bedding. lmao mum's a little miffed
She DOES know they usually only live up to about 2 years, right?
@@TomikaKelly yeah it died like 2 months ago...
It was her second one as well. Rip
Thank you for talking about this. It`s an important topic that many owners ignore!
I have a hamster, she lives in a small cage though. My mom doesn't want me to waste money and right now she doesn't have a lot of bedding. When I get older,, I hope i can get a hamster to properly take care of. But right now, I love my little Pumpkin and she loves her cage! 🥰
if you don't have the money for a cage of thought size i recommend rehoming her I know it's sad but it's the best for your hamster
@@poppy7740 she is in a good sized cage and not like the one in the video and she has lots of playing things i've made for her, like a playpen, a hideout, some toys and she runs around outside of her cage often and she always loves it when i hold her ❤️
I'm so glad I finally found someone that's spreading awareness about small rodents needing more space, bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats and other small rodents need more space than what the pet stores give you, don't listen to pet stores they'll tell you stuff so that they can make more money. I really want a better cage for my next hamster, but convincing my parents is hard. :(
bro i wish people would put even that much bedding in their enclosures 💀
the standard is a ✨sprinkle✨ of wood chips in there so the hamster can kick the single pieces around on the hard plastic floor…
also let‘s keep a minimum of two in there so they have ComPAnY 🤪
In my country, the small cages arent even allowed for the hamsters.
I’m so happy you’re now doing shorts! Totally here for it! I absolutely love your channel! ❤️

Yes they need a lot of space they deserve it they are very special animals I love them so much thank you Victoria for everything we appreciate it ❤😊☺💝
I like to call it an habitat and not a cage. And cage is a place you don’t want to be while a habitat has everything you need to survive comfortably and is a place you do want to be
I have a winter white dwarf called Maze and a Chinese hamster called Lucifer, they each have a 775sq cage with around 8-10 inches of bedding and 10 inch wheels, lots of hides and toys, natural materials, different substrates, forage, like 5 different food mixes mixed together so they get proper nutrition, and lots and lots of more things. I would’ve loved to give them more space but as I can’t at the moment I make sure they have all the enrichment I could possibly fit in their cages and that they get new things often. They don’t show any boredom or stress behaviors, and they were both rescue hamsters that I drove a couple of hours to get :) I’m so happy I can give them proper lives.
Yeah, this happens so often with betta fish too unfortunately, smallest I've seen is an alcohol bottle.
ive seen someone put two guppies
IN THEIR NAILS. ACRYLIC NAILS
I could say the same about those tiny glass hermit crab cages. Just because a creature is smaller than you doesn’t mean they need something super small to live in
thanks for educating ppl! i never had the chance to actually have any hamsters but i still tell everyone who wants to get one about the proper enclosures and wheels and everything i learned from you.
❤ VICTORIA FOR LIFE ❤

I feel so bad for my hamster, they were considered cheap pets so my family got them without looking into it but now my hamster is to old to move into a bigger cage he can barely use his stairs
I had one of those and i hated it so much I kept asking my dad to make me a din cage and I got one so now my hamster is so so happy
Wait do people actually still use these for hamsters?
Yep
Sadly..
The small cage is perfect for traveling and that’s it.
Totally agree thank you for sharing this and sticking up for the ones who cant for themselves!!
thank you for these videos. I hope they've changed some hamster lives. When I first got my hamster in 2020 (she's since passed, sadly), I hadn't done the proper research and she had a small cage and tubes that were too tight for her once she wad fully grown. After she had chewed on the bars a lot and escaped a few times, I buckled down and did a lot more research. We got her a 400sq inch cave with two floors, tubes, and multiple stimulating toys, a wheel etc. she was so much happier. no more chewing or trying to escape. If the pet store hadn't misinformed us by encouraging small cages and tubes it never would have begun that way. I hope that they are banned at some point.
Never let them know your next move- puts less items inside the cage
That hamster cage at the end looks better than my entire house.. it’s perfect 🤩
What a beautiful hamster enclosure you have ❤
No it's not that's pretty bad
God bless you!!
my parents bought me a hamster before i knew this, and i'm working to convince them to upgrade her cage. i guess i'll see.
If i had a hamster i would have a big Cage and a smaller Cage when we travel for a Short time
I have a dwarf hamster and she is named fluffy and she has a bigger cage than that with a tunnel and she loves it and she is so cute
They like to DIG. My brother had hamsters that would burrow 6 inches down and snooze. Sometimes we'd see their lil face pressed against the clear walls.
Personally I would only use that sized cage for transport. Like if your selling the hamster or taking it to the vet don't use these for actual housing
Thank you for putting this into perspective ❤❤
That cage is what I call a sick cage or a end of life cage when they don't move much and need to be monitored hourly.
i hate people who dont inform themselves what their pet needs before getting one🤦♀️
Though I dont think I'll ever own another hamster again. I'm glad I came across Victoria's channel when I did own ❤
Remember smaller cages/ carrier/terraniums etc for temporary use for emergencies or transport them to the vet. Never go bare minimum for animals always go for largest home you can create for them.
I just got a hamster yesterday and at petsmart they told us none of their enclosures were actually good for hamsters and they recommended we bought a big tote and honestly the best decision ever, we could fit a lot more hiding spots and a bigger wheel, plus with all that extra bedding he has made another room out of tunnels in less than a day
Yes! I support this 😢 not only was it a bad first time(changed later) home for my hamsters, wasted lots of money on those expensive small pet shop ones
My boyfriend said his ex kept getting hamsters and wouldn’t feed them. He was working constantly and going to college while she was at home. He said the average life span for them was 3-4 months. My jaw dropped and I felt sick. I told him that she killed babies for a long time. Was really sad to hear…
Friendly reminder that just because an animal is small it doesn't mean that the animal is easy to take care of. Children are small but they aren't easy to care for! I'm glad that more people are educating others on the proper care for animals like hamsters that often get sold to families thinking its an easy pet to keep!
I had a big cage that my dad made for my hamster but sadly it passed away like 1 week or smth before her 2 yrs birthday
Thank you!! Hamsters have huge territories in the wild, they really are so unhappy in tiny overfilled cages. Pet stores often try to sell tiny cages for most animals - always do your own extensive research.
When I first saw that tiny cage I thought it was yet another kid who doesn't know how to properly take care of their hammy. Then I saw your profile and was relieved.
What size is thee wheel
My hamster Goldie has a okay cage. It’s is super small but nope as small as that one. We are working for a better one tho. Giving her as much as we can. Goldie I love you!!!
A few days ago our Hamster (Cookie) passed, I wasn't well educated until a few month ago but we just couldn't get the room for a large cage, so sadly he had to have something similar to this cage in size. He's last Hamster I'll properly ever own until I can get the proper room for one. Thanks for the education!

I love ur videos Victoria they r so entertaining and enriching!!! We can all learn a lot from u and ur experience!!!❤
Where do i get that large cage and toys
Even tho hamsters are small they need a huge cage with at least 6 inches of bedding to be able to burrow
Think of these cages as houses. That is a very small house of anyone that size.
Also those small cages are for transporting them to and from the vets or holding them while you clean stuff out. I prefer something bigger when cleaning but still.
I had one of these cages... It was his travel cage, bc I wouldn't leave him behind when we travelled. His normal cage was a four story one with toys, tubes, a house and a dust tube. R.i.p Dante, you were a little champ
The first cage stressed me out so much 😭😭
I have a hamster and she has a small cage but with attachment tunnels and we let her run around at night outside (and yes on the open grass) everyday so she’s enjoying her life.
Those tunnels are very dangerous they can get stuck or die from amonia inhalation
I always used a large glass rectangular fish tank with a ventilated lid and it worked perfect!
i rlly want to use a bigger cage but my parents insisted
I hate these cages so much. What i hate even more is children abusing their hamsters cuz they don't know how to properly take care of them, and end up treating them like that one to your annoying cousin found. These cages are barley livable, and im so glad your teaching people the right way to take care of them. In my opinion though, ones bigger than this woukd be good to use as temporary areas when sick or smth and they can't be in their usuall invirement, yet still make sure to make the space comfy
Your first short! I am so exited to watch all the other amazing shorts you post❤
You have made all my hams lives better. You are an awesome lass, much love.
I'm happy I could help!
Ty you have made my hamster so much better she loves her new home so much Ty you for making her life better
Bin Cages are honestly so cheap, spacious, and easy to make and furnish for your hamster, I wish more people would opt for those instead of these tiny excuses for a living environment 🤦♀️
As a child my hamster lived in a repurposed large fish tank 😊 she lived for two years of me having her but she was fully grown when I got her
I went to my friends house to find they had a squirrel but it was in a tiny cage and that made me cry when It went up to my hand when I got the squirrel out 😢❤
(i was allowed to hold the squirrel and no harm was done)
Agreed but not everyone has the room for a single large enclosure. Alternatively we have setup multiple enclosures connected by tubes to provide run space and varied environments. Total space approximates the size of your large version.
Unfortunately those connectable enclosures still do not provide the space for proper enrichment. If you're capable of having the space to have that many enclosures (1,000 SQ inches worth) you definitely have space for one proper sized enclosure. On the other hand if someone doesn't have space for a proper cage they just shouldn't get that pet, just like you wouldn't get a great dane if you're living in studio apartment lol
im so glad im seeing this! im15 and working so ill definitly save up to get more stuff for my hamster!
people use these small cages and then wonder why their hamster dies after a month💀
It's like making your hamster live in his tiny apartment which has one room for the bed, kitchen and toilet all at once. A cage isn't just their home, it's their world.
I frowned so hard. stupid tiny cages.
I had a bunny as a 10yo child. Biggest mistake Ever I mean I loved him sm but he litt had a cage with No space he always bit the cage and I thiught it was bc he was hungry, finding out it causes stress after he passed felt so bad now I have a hamster and in a huge tank and great inside and care, just so yall know i know we all made the same mistake, and its okay, we all change.
Love IT how she didnt even Had small Things For the Cage BC she ONLY buys big Things Houses, toilets, wheels😂😂❤❤❤❤❤(Love how she makes the hamsters dream Life come true)
It’s good for a travel carrier
For anyone who wants a hamster or has one thats not being cared for properly:
a hamster needs a cage 5 times its size. they prefer water bowls over bottles. tubing is often dangerous for them since its poor ventilation and a tight squeeze as well. they need lots of bedding to burrow in. they need a lot of hides. and never use a wheel that has slits or holes in it. hamsters can break their legs on it.
its fine to want a pet but its not okay to shove them in a small cage. its barely surviving when it needs to thrive!
