      Moron. He did sit out a 2 match suspension for the Miandad incident, and the bet was a practical joke - a bookie had England at 500 to 1. Lillee was also suffering from viral meningitis throughout the entire 1981 series and was still good enough to take 30+ wickets.

The rest is history, they didn't influence the match, it unravelled with the brilliant comeback of the England side.

      Considering Lillee's temperament, I wouldn't be surprised if the Miandad/Lillee confrontation was even lower in the list. When pissed off, say, because the batsman slogged him, he would plant himself in the batsman's runway to irk them. Viv Richards had once complained to the umpire about it.

  • @sarfrazmh31
    @sarfrazmh31 Před 3 lety +16

    The catch at fine leg by left handed Pakistani batsman looks illegal and should be a six instead. From this video and view, clearly the Aussie fielder touched the boundary hoarding with his left elbow in the same catching action. So either the umpire and match referee are both incompetent, or the Aussie fielder who took that "illegal" catch is dishonest from this video view.
    Any other view to clarify if catch was legally taken?

    • @davekeegan2398
      @davekeegan2398 Před 3 lety +5

      I think at the time it was legal to be in contact with the advertising boards and take a catch. It’s also interesting to know the the ball had to go over the boards for it to be a six in those days if it hit the boards it was a 4. The laws of the game have changed since those days.Also not sure if match referees existed in those days.

    • @Bernie8330
      @Bernie8330 Před 3 lety +1

      Prior to 1980, you could go outside of the boundary after taking a catch. Then between 1980 and 2000 you had to stay in the field of play but you could lean against a fence, stand on a rope, as long you didn''t touch the ground outside the field of play - you could even theoretically stand atop a fence to take a catch as long as you didn't topple over the other side.

    Not suggesting that he didn't do the wrong thing with the aluminium bat, but his annoyance was understandable. He'd written to the Australian cricket board beforehand and asked for permission to use the bat. The board totally missed the point of what he was asking them and granted him permission. Imagine Lillee's dismay when gets out in the middle and promptly gets told by the umpires to get rid of the bat - in other words, the exact scenario that Lillee had gone to some pains to avoid.

      You clearly have no idea. Do you have any idea of his missing WSC SuperTest wickets, against the mighty West Indies, arguably the greatest Test side of all time & World XI matches, plus World XI Tests in 1972?
      Tony Cosier stated that Lillee is the best overseas bowler ever to play on Carribean shores. The West Indians rated Dennis as the best fast bowler ever. Viv Richards does as well.
      Lillee took 103 wkts in 19 unofficial Tests. His true total is 89 Tests, 458wkts wkts @ 23.91, 29x 5wkt hauls and 9x 10wkt hauls. He took 12/89 vs WSC World XI & 12/92 vs 1972 World XI, which included Gavaskar, Sobers, Lloyd, Greig etc.
      You seem not to understand that Australia in Lillee's era, refused to play on the subcontinent for safety reasons, food hygiene issues & dysentery. When he did play in Pakistan, DK was at the height of his abilities, they doctored the pitches to featherbeds, negating his abilities & spinning wkts. Nearly all the wkts taken in that Test series was by spin bowlers.

      Australia's only tour of India during Lillee's career occurred while he was unavailable for selection due to his being in the West Indies (and getting a bag of wickets, giving the lie to your imputation that he wasn't good in the WI) with WSC. His only tour of Pakistan was marred by doctored pitches - as I recall Pakistan quicks Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz were also ineffective in that series.
      He played in the inaugural Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Colombo in the twilight of his career and took 3 wickets including captain Duleep Mendis twice. Do some research before bagging a legend next time.
