A month ago my puppy was in full DISTRESS … soaking himself in drool and biting at the crate, scream barking. Listening to your video, she doesn’t have a bad case of separation anxiety. She barks for 3 or less minutes, and is very calm when I return. I recently got a new puppy that was used to more freedom with their breeder. No matter when I put the puppy in the crate, he cries constantly. He stops sometimes, but even moving him as he sleeps doesn’t work he immediately wakes up 🥴

My new 15 week german shepherd mix does really well in the crate - most of the time. She generally goes in without an issue, she sleeps all night, without a peep, and she comfortably naps all day while I'm at work. But if I am home, she often whines and cries when I put her in the crate - or when I close a gate between us. Occasionally, she has gotten herself really worked up and screamed when I have walked away, but she stops when I return. She can usually settle in her crate - especially if I have worked her brain and exercised her - which I work really hard to always do. Or if I give her a stuffed kong or pupsicle. So it's strange, because she can happily be in there, but she also definitely prefers to be out, and especially out with me. I don't think she has severe anxiety or separation anxiety, but clearly she is dealing with some. I am grateful that she generally does so well in there, but hopeful we can improve the other times as well.
The fact that your pup is doing well in the crate for nights and naps is excellent. That's going to be something you can build on to increase her independence when you are home and she is awake. The way we work on this is to do the training games where you slowly increase your distance and duration away. You'll start with just a short time (even just a few seconds) and reward her for being calm. Slowly you increase your time and she will become comfortable being alone. Puppy whines for a few minutes, but settles for the night. We have had her for a week and she's 4 1/2 months old. She panics if we put her in the crate during the day, however. I have yet to be able to get her settled when she knows we are awake and moving around! We are throwing treats in the crate every time we come in from potty and most of the time she will go in willingly. Working on encouraging her to enjoy her Kong there also -- but I have to hold it for her while she eats it or she will just take it out of the crate!

We've had our lil Moose since he was 9 weeks old. He has come a long way. He'll be 4 months old on Monday! He still whines when I go to work, but my wife is home so he's never truly left alone. But he is very attached to me and does whine and cry when I leave or even just have a shower I hear him at the door whining. It's getting under control though. We have calming music and that usually helps at least it does now.

My puppy is a 5 month beagle and when we leave him home alone. He barks and howls but it is on and off. He is not destructive and he doesn't pee in the house. We give him an area to stay with the crate. Which he will go in occasionally when alone he might lay down quiet for a bit. He might start howling or whining. But he constantly will pace around the given area and in and out the crate. He will lay down quietly for awhile. But then do it all over again. He seems like he is impatient on waiting on us to come home. We also give him a kong or a toy that we only give him when he is alone to play with before we leave. But it doesnt keep him that busy more than an 30 mins to an 1 hour. Base off the spectrum he is between howling to sleeping. So I dont know it has been 2 months of practicing leaving him alone. We see signs of improvement everytime but I just wanted to make sure.
It can take quite awhile for your puppy to get used to their new home and crate. Make sure you exercise him both mentally and physically, as this will help him be able to settle better in his crate and at home overall. Yep! And so does your puppy! It might take some training but it's important to go slowly and keep it positive so your dog has a lifelong positive association with the crate, with being alone and a positive association with you! These are all things that might go south if you're not able to take the training at a slow pace, or if your dog has negative experiences being alone or in the crate. It won't be like this forever but for right now it's important to work on it with your dog.
Crate training is…something. He’s fine in the crate but he definitely doesn’t WANT to go inside. It takes him a little to decide he will go in and get the treats and knows that means he’s going to get locked in. I was giving him freedom to hang outside the crate while I was gone but lately, after having a house guest and being away 5-6 hours at a time, he’s started displaying destructive tendencies even if I was gone for only 2 hours which he had been used to. I’m thinking he’s going to have to go back in the crate while I’m out and maybe from there we can work up to him realizing even if I’m gone for a long time I will be back. I work from home so he’s used to me being in the house most of the day.
It sounds like you're on the right track. Not all puppies earn the freedom to roam when alone - even though we may desperately want to give them that privilege. It takes time, practice and consistency to get them to that point!

I have my 22 month old cavalier king Charles at the stage where she will wander out to the garden on her own for 10+ , when I go into another room with the doors open she will stay on the sofa alone while I do my jobs and if I leave her alone at he for an hour I find her curled up asleep on the sofa. When I need to go to the shops for an hour or two I put on a film on the TV for her and put down one of my t-shirts or shirt I wore the day before for her to lie down on to make her comfortable. When I leave I don't make a big deal of it. I just give her a treat sometimes , day nothing and calmly walk out of the room and close the door behind me. She doesn't fuss or anything. Then when I come he she doesn't get hyper and just calmly looks up at me as if to say "oh hello. Your home" When I got her first I was spend all her waking time socialising her with other people , training her and playing he's with her. I always used positive reinforcement with my training. I never got angry at her no matter how frustrated I got and I never hit her. When she done the wrong thing I walked away for a minute then tried again. When she done what I asked if her I gave her lots of praise , rubs and a treat. I was watching these videos months before I got my dog. Now she is very well behaved and she is very good on walks. When we come to a pedestrian crossing she will stop and wait , sometimes she will be whining because she wants to keep going but she will always wait until either I start walking or until I say "ok". If she's off.krad she comes when I call her 95% of the time. In fact I tested her a few days ago. We were in the park and she was off lead. There was a person about 50 foot ahead with a dog. As.wr got closer I saw she wanted to go to the other dog but when I I told her to come she didn't approach the dog even the dog was about ten foot away and she followed me away from the other dog. I don't usually leave her off.lead if there's another person with a dog but that time I just wanted to test how she would respond. She still pills on the lead about 25% of the walk but she's good on most of our walk. It took a whole lot of time , repetition and effort in the end it was worth every second of it.

We have experienced delays in going inside the house when we ask her to. If there is a treat, she comes immediately or if we say someone is home that does not live with us like Grandma. Also, Gigi does not always feel comfortable going out for a potty break without us and on her leash even though our backyard is enclosed with a wall. She loves her crate and is actually resting in it right now next to me. We are still working with Gigi on her happy pee for visitors (even those people she sees all the time). She still has small accidents inside the house unless they greet her outside in the backyard. We also noticed she does not go potty in other family member's backyards even if on a leash. She will hold it until getting home. We only leave her in the crate for no more than 2 hours if we are not home. Also, she licks her paws a lot and will not let us touch them even though we inspect them. Is this all common for 1 year old pups?

Can someone please explain this to me - one video on this channel says to let them cry it out, then this video says that leaving them for more than 10 mins can create separation anxiety? I'm leaving my pup to cry and will let him out when he's quiet, but are we just making it worse now?

We ignore his obvious whines and barks for attention but we're looking out for signs of panic that were mentioned and so far we've had 4 nights in a row of good bedtime crating 🤞🏻

It's been a week and my puppy hates the crate, she's gotten better at being in there during the day, she just won't go and lay in there on her own. We take her out for potty breaks at night and she'll cry to signal that she needs to go but sometimes after I put her back in after a potty break she starts crying so loud again and howling, if I go and shoosh her it most of the time works though
It can definitely take some adjustment for some puppies to feel comfortable in their crate, much longer than a week. They're getting used to a whole new home and life, so there is a lot to adjust to!
