  • Meetu means finger clips. You can say that these are props that can be used by students who have minor textural issues of their fingers. There is a long standing debate on this topic. Personally, I feel teachers must look at individual physiological needs and introduce these clips.The video clearly explains this topic.

    I have always wondered about this - very useful topic. As you explained, my childhood guru was of the school of thought that we feel the instrument - so it was no meetu at the beginning. I had blisters in my fingers the first few months which were painful - looking back I am glad I did not quit veena. Finally when I got my first clips, I was so thrilled! Thanks for posting videos on such simple but important topics.

    A very useful video for all the veena players to know why we hv to use the clips or why not we hv to use the clips. Very nicely and scientifically explained on this debatable topic.

    Using meetu gives a sharper attack to the tone and more “pluck”. Fingers will have a warmer and more rounded tone. Depending on tone you are going for, can use both. Classical guitarists grow and use nails

      Meetu pressure can also be adjusted to give a warmer tone. Yes if a song requires a sharper pluck meetu definitely helps. Vainikas grow nails too. Here again the problem of brittle nails are quite common. Thanks for writing in Chandra.

    This is such an important video for the plucker question. It definitely helped me to play with meetu, as I was struggling to get the sound out of Veena. Initially I didn't realize and I was digging my left hand fingers to get the sound, which was painful. Thank you for suggesting meetu to me (sounds like palindrome). 😀

    Thank you for shedding light on this debated topic ma'am. I can now whole heartedly enjoy my music practise with meetu having no guilt or doubts within😊🙏

    Thank you for the detailed explanation. While you have addressed the Meetu myths, does the logic hold good for finger sleeves to avoid blisters and hampering our practice further. Actually, its a vicious circle, the more we practice with bare hands, the more sore our fingers on left hand get, but then if they are sore we cannot practice until they heal relatively.

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes of course, if your fingers are prone to get blisters, wearing finger sleeves is the best option. I have done it for close to 2 years when I had issues of contant blistering. At the end of the day, you have to enjoy what you do. Go ahead and make yourself comfortable

    A very informative and explorative topic! Thank you for explaining the subtleties behind the finger clips usage and using the fingers directly to play. I have also seen some teachers introducing finger clips made from silver for the two playing fingers as well as the one for playing the Thalam. Any thoughts on those versus the regular metal ones which many of us are exposed to? Is there a tonal quality difference?

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  Před 2 lety

      Hi Revathi, Metal on a metal always has tonal timbre variations. Meetu clips made of different metals and guages are going to have slight tonal variations.

    Very good explination madam, I do wonder in those old days centuries before, how they have played the great instrument and what kind of strings and meetu our great veena players have played this instrument.
    I have seen some videos the masters are growing there nails and maintaining there long nails for playing the veena. Pls do some advice madam.

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  Před 2 lety

      In the olden days we had very few people playing the instrument. Hence major issues may not have been noticed. But with more people taking to the instrument now, such issues of finger tenderness are coming to the fore. So just observe the nature of your fingers and do things accordingly.
      My own Guru grew nails and the tone it creates is unique. But there are so many vainikas who have tried growing nails and failed because nail quality is different with different people. If the nails are brittle in narure then better to go for meetu.

    Respected ma'am, for with bare fingers, my nadam was very pleasant, but with meettu it's sound bad, and lossing my hope, is it mandatory

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  Před 2 lety +1

      Why did you shift to meetu, if you were fine with bare fingers? Meetu is only for students whose skin layer is thin, leading to poor sound quality. Please get back to your bare finger playing and enjoy your nadam

    Great video. Can you please share any tips for building calluses on the left hand? I noticed one of your students wearing something white on his fingers, does it help?

      I used to have very sensitive left hand fingers for a few years in between for which i wore finger caps made of pure cotton. These are available now on Amazon. To a large extent they take care of the pain and one can play normally. One should also work on the body systemically, because I realised severe acidity was one reason causing such issues.

    • @alokrajguru6969
      @alokrajguru6969 Před 2 lety +1

      Hi.
      It was me who was wearing those white color finger caps. Now I have been having a sensitive left hand from last couple of months. There was lot of pain if I play the veena without those caps and plus the skin will come off every single day. So maam had advice to use these finger caps for the left hand. Now with my experience I would tell you it really helps a lot. Your practice won't stop nor does your learning of veena. It is really good to play with them but at some point in time you have to get rid of them to. For that, has maam has said it's all about our body changes internally and we hv to work on that. The finger caps are available on Amazon so you can buy them there.

    Wouldn't shifting to meetu after/during learning varnams be a huge shift for those who have gotten comfortable using fingers? Any tips that you can share for an easy transition?

    • @malaviswanathan
      @malaviswanathan  Před 2 lety +2

      Every transition requires a bit of observation and adjustment. For example, first time when you wear glasses, buy new pair of shoes or slippers etc. As I have mentioned , instead of jumping to playing the lessons directly, initially do only strike practice. After getting comfortable with that, move to the actual playing.
