    Gorgeous Plecos. I have a tank with 8 L397’s. They grow much faster than Hypans, and also much more messy. I have to clean the HOB prefilter every 2-3 days. Good taste in plecos Bob. 👍

  • @brittg710
    @brittg710 Před 2 lety

    I just accidentally bought one of these guys. By accident I mean that I intended to use a gift card but…a oops happened lol. Anyways, I’m cycling a 75g that will be mostly spider wood, driftwood and even a branch I found outside that a bug ate on and made some cool designs on (prepped the wood of course) and a tree knee I found in the swamp that has a cool cave like hole (also prepped)…I was wondering, is this fish ok in a new tank or should I let it grow for a bit in one of my smaller but established tanks? This guy cost a nice shinny penny and I want to make sure everything is right for his/her arrival.

  • @MarksShrimpTanks

    What is with all the L number in catfish or is it just a pleco thing ?

    • @SteenfottAquatics
      @SteenfottAquatics  Před 5 lety

      The L stands for the scientific name Loricariidae. The numbers are used for identification in the hobby. Since some species have multiple common names in the hobby.

    • @plecopimp1587
      @plecopimp1587 Před 5 lety

      If I may critique what Bob said the L# is giving to a “new pleco” before it has been scientifically described, it can refer to a collection point of the fish and sometimes refers to the age of the fish. That sometimes can get confusing seeing that sometimes the same species can have multiple L#s and LDA#s
      The L is a reference to the family loricariidae. The scientific name is is a 2 part name to identify the genus and the species. So in this case the pleco has not been scientifically described so at this point would be referenced as panaqolus sp. l397 when the pleco has been scientifically described the L# “should” stop being used. But seeing that the l#s are easier to remember they stick even after they have been described. Hopefully that helps and Bob now you need to pick up a l306

  • @Eexitee
    @Eexitee Před 5 lety

    Hey, how does L397 works with plants? Does he eats them a lot? Im thinking about buying some, but my tank is planted, and I dont really want to choose between plecos and plants.

    • @FreshwaterIchthyology
      @FreshwaterIchthyology Před 4 lety

      I had Panaqolus spp. with plants and they were no issue, their not really herbivores so wont go for them. I find most Loricariidae wont eat aquarium plants although some can easily dig them up.

    @drockingfish Před 5 lety +1

    Where did you find it???

  • @FreshwaterIchthyology
    @FreshwaterIchthyology Před 4 lety +1

    Lovely species but the mess is insane from any Panaqolus, I refuse to buy anymore as I have two Panaqolus albivermis and Panaqolus maccus and the wood residues clog up my filters easily. Their technically not wood eaters, studies prove that they actually assimilate the bacteria which decays the wood making them more of a biofilm eater, the same goes for Panaque and most likely Hypostomus of the Cochliodon group. They don't have the gut bacteria nor physiology to break down cellulose. Although wood allows them to perform their natural behaviour so it's more then beneficial to have, I like the dull looking bogwood as it seems to grow bacteria well.
