Growing up I always thought that my mom and dad were a bit over protective. Not letting me go to sleep overs or summer camp for most of my childhood.
Later on I found out that my dad was a victim sexual abuse. And they were doing their best to make sure that they didn't happen to my brother or I. I'm grateful and I consider myself lucky to have parents who looked out for me so genuinely.

I didn't get to do my first sleepover until I was 11. I found out that someone in my family had experienced SA as well. It was only after I'd taken some self-defense courses to counteract bullying and I'd gotten big and strong enough to possibly fight off a predator (or at least escape and call and tell my parents what was happening) that they let me go--and even then, it was with a family friend's mother supervising. They always had to meet the parents first to "feel them out" so to speak. My dad was a military policeman at one time and he was verrrry good at reading people.
I too, have not taken my little ones to summer camps, before and after school care and sleepovers. Sleepovers only in middle school and only if i knew the parents really well and who would be at the house at the time.
I hate to say this but what’s sad is you really can’t trust anyone these days. I know children should not be so sheltered that they can’t have fun but overnight stays are not necessary and not a good idea. I will never forget picking up a check for my husband at a guys house he had done work for and the house was in a really nice neighborhood, it was really clean and well decorated, his wife was beautiful for her age and everything seemed perfect. They had a couple young kids and forgot his occupation but they clearly had money. He seemed very nice. Found out much later he had molested plenty of kids that stayed at their house in the neighborhood.
Over protection can go too far. In example we have a generation still living at home with their parents. My kid takes jiu jitsu, goes to camps and has a great time. Just be vigilant.
This is one of the worst cases I’ve ever heard. May that child rapist and murderer rot in hell.

Years ago, I met a woman on a blind date through a personal ad. She was a divorced woman with a 6 month old baby. I got to her apartment on a Friday afternoon at 5 PM, when we were supposed to meet. She and her baby showed up 15 minutes late. She said that she was out of diapers and formula, so she had to buy some before I took her and her baby to dinner. She said it would be faster if she went alone. So she left me alone in her apartment with her baby while she went shopping. She came back half an hour later, and we then went to dinner. She knew my name and phone number but nothing else. Everything went fine, and I took good care of her baby before she returned so we could have dinner, but I couldn't help thinking that she was way too trusting.

Though "Stranger Danger" is rare, the Mom showed incredibly poor judgment by allowing her daughter to go off with a stranger.

"Stranger danger" is not rare.
It's hard to say that Stranger Danger is rare because many parents are tuned into this danger. so who knows how much it would occur if parents or caregivers were routinely lax about it.

Maybe the data is old, but doubtful much has changed. In this case she handed her kid over to the stranger!
I've watched the medical examiner testimony. The horror and suffering the little girl went through is unimaginable.

I watched the M.E. testimony too. IT gave me NIGHTMARES for weeks. It was by far THE MOST disturbing things i have ever heard happen to a human being. I wish i had never watched it.

This is such a sad story. The man preyed on a vulnerable mother and did horrible things to her child. The moral of the story is if it is too good to be true, it usually is. There is always an ulterior motive. Nothing is ever free
The moral of the story is also that if something seems too good to be true as a bare minimum at least stay highly cautious and take no risks whilst you wait to see if it might be true all the same.
I’ve given people rides for free. I e given people money for free when they say they need it. People gave my dad and sis and I a ride once when we were like 2 and 4 walking in the snow.
There are good people who do good things for free, but skepticism and caution are still wise. No matter how kind and charming a stranger is, I’m not going to let him take my kid out of my sight.

I remember one time when I was 13 we had a repair man in the house. My dad was going to run 5 minutes up the road to pick up my mom and he would be back in literally 10 minutes. I don't know why but I just started crying and begging him not to leave me alone with that man in the house. Thankfully he didn't. Some parents have terrible judgement.

I can’t believe how many times he was arrested. The attempting kidnapping charge in itself is terrifying.
I feel so bad that little Cherish lost her life because she had a mother who put her at risk just because she thought a stranger was going to give her a $150 shopping card.
Her boyfriend gave her $100 + this was to pay $40 for her taxi to the airport in the morning to go to California to visit her father. That left her with $60 to buy Cherish some new clothes for the trip.
She walked 20 minutes, with her 3 small kids, to the store + bought enough "household goods" that when Cherish asked her to buy a $7 dress Reine, her mom, said she didn't have enough money.
Just for the thought of this $150 coupon she + the kids got in his van, she allowed Don to take Cherish into the changing room, + was so distracted picking out shoes for herself that she let Cherish wander off with him supposedly to McDonalds.
She had a full cart waiting at the check out, when the store closed, waiting for Don + the "all important coupon".
If she had of gone to the store + bought things for Cherish the little girl would have had her dress she wanted + more, been home early, had a good sleep, + got on the plane to take her to visit her dad in California.
It was her mother's greed for herself that ended up leading to little Cherish's murder. She bought everything but nothing for Cherish + this money coupon was so important to her that she let this old man be in the presence of her daughters, take Cherish to the changing room with him twice, + finally let her walk off with him.
The message that Raine sent to Cherish, by allowing him to be close to her, was that he could be trusted - that's why she followed him out of the store + was tragically murdered.
I believe that Reine should have been charged with putting her young daughter's life in danger + ultimately ending her life.
I agree. Having little or no money is no excuse! Poor mothering and judgement.
I believe that's called child endangerment at best and criminal negligence causing death at worst.
Getting this guy to promise he wouldn't be arrested again after such an extensive criminal history is laughable. Or would be if it wasn't so tragic. If only he'd been kept in prison where he obviously belonged, Cherish would be alive today. (But I agree that the mother used incredibly bad judgement. How will she ever forgive herself?) He may have meant it at the time. In Australia a promise is only legally binding until somebody dares you, and then double dog dares you to break it.
Well, he belonged in a secure hospital more than a prison. He’d served the sentences for his crimes but obviously posed a danger.
Cause he was white. If he was black he’d be tied up like he’s some animal and sent straight to jail with zero appeals or parole.
Though she should never let her child go with a stranger, she probably didn’t realize anybody that bad existed. He should have been in prison permanently as per recommendation, before he preyed on the lady and her children.
She absolutely knew people like him existed. She'd been abused herself, in the past. And somewhat bizarrely (whilst calling in her CHILD BEING ABDUCTED), she decided to talk about her own rape (from a long time ago) to the operator.
I don't doubt it happened. But there's a time and a place to bring it up. When trying to save your child's life, your own trauma may have to wait. So yeah- she knew sexual predators exist. She even admitted noticing his inappropriate behaviour towards Cherish
But she kept allowing him to be alone with her, regardless- because she didn't want to 'offend' him and lose out on a gift card. It doesn't matter if she didn't know, that he would be a murderer, too. She knew Cherish was at realistic risk of sexual abuse. That is not acceptable to allow, in any form.
Absolutely no way that I'd ever allow one of my children to go off with some random stranger, what on earth was the mother thinking??
Not for all the money in the world and not for all the tea in China. There were some relatives my parents didn't even let us visit unsupervised, let alone a stranger.

Saw this trial and the testimony of the Medical Examiner. The sexual assault was so horrific that the M.E. had a nervous breakdown on the stand explaining what he did to that poor baby.

I don't know how the medical examiner managed to keep his career after this case. I would be so mortified that I would probably quit my job. Just absolutely horrible.

This is why I believe in the death sentence. There's no good reason to keep someone like him alive in cases where guilt is clear and indisputable and there's no chance of wrongful conviction.
That’s the thing though, as Dr. Todd stated it can take 10+ years or more to exhaust all of their appeals even if they’re guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Not to mention it’s a lot more expensive to house people on death row because of the appeals and higher costs of defense
To the procecution, every death penalty case is clear and indisputable. No one sentences a person to death if they are not certain. Problem is, no matter how certain you are, some times you are just completely wrong. Some times, it isn't even your fault. There are plenty of convicted murders that were innocent and were just surrounded by circunstancial evidence and a bunch of coincidences that no reasonable person would doubt. And yet, they were wrong.
The death penalty doesn't prevent crime like this but it does ensure the monster doesn't re offend.

It's easily one of the most infuriating cases ever to be documented. The fact that it's happening on camera is heartbreaking it's chilling. Watching him just walk off with her like that is 100% soul crushing.

This was terrible, an absolute horror. I was so angry with her mother for not protecting her and I was relieved when I learned she lost custody of all her children. The courts were wrong for ever letting this guy out of prison and an innocent child paid the price.

He is the absolute worst. If it’s possible to hate the guy even more than u already do, watch the videos of him in jail ranting about what he did on the phone. Then again, don’t. I am a parent and it was traumatic listening to him try to weasel his way out of this horrific situation (as if there was hope for him in the legal system after this particular crime).

Logic and ethical principles go right out the window when strong emotions are involved. not just legal system, the root cause this happened is the family court. The father wanted custody of the children and he seems normal and not broke, but because she is a woman of course she got custody of the kid by default.

It's as if she couldn't grasp the severity of the situation, nor why people didn't want to hire her because if she can put her child in danger she can do the same for a workplace. Not sure she was able to grasp that. The fact that people on the internet could see that, but a judge couldn't yet awarded her custody over the father, jsut wow!

I can say with 100% certainty , that this little girls horrible death was 10000% preventable on so many levels. Terrible to say the least.
This was one of the worst cases that haunted me for years. The details of what was done to this child were horrific.
That poor sweetheart. With the adults around her, including two bickering parents and a sick predator, this baby didn't have a chance. The best we can hope for is that this dangerous man never gets out of prison.

Even though Donald was a despicable man, Rain’s judgement was extremely poor. I think this was an unfortunate meeting of two people who were dangerous in their own ways, and subsequently a young life was taken because of it.

I’m trying to figure out how a Mother lets her 8 year old go with a stranger. He was an adult, he didn’t need that baby to go with him to get food! This is what happens when you don’t use common sense when you think you’re getting a freebie. She practically gave little Cherish to a sex offender for cheap stuff at Dollar Store and hamburgers.

She let him go into the dressing room with her daughter TWICE and also tried sending her 5 yr old with him to get burgers too but luckily she hid from him to avoid going. Her own family isn't surprised by what happened in her care because of her continual neglect and blames her for what happened. She also lost custody of her other children to her sister and Aunt because of her lack of parenting.
This case seems to be an absolute portrait of what is wrong with our criminal justice system. Dozens of people failed that little girl and society, such a shame.

This is the story that stopped true crime for me for a while. I deleted all my facebook groups I was traumatized about this little girl, still am. Im not going to watch it but Im glad more our aware of this poor little girls story. Disgusting and heatbreaking.

They will always fall back on their diagnosis as a safety blanket to protect themselves from blame & responsibility. I was best friends with a girl who had borderline & once she was diagnosed that was her excuse for every awful thing she did to people. "Oh whoa is me, I have borderline & I cant control my actions". I dumped her like a ton of bricks because that is what she was. I dont waste my time befriending mentally ill people anymore. They dont want to get better or they would figure it out. My dad has bipolar II & that is a long story in iteself. Bipolar has a high rate of being genetic. I have never been diagnosed with it because I was manic once & I realized that mania is literally just a state of mind. If you dont allow yourself to get into that state of mind, you wont go manic. Its been 20 years since then & I am doing just fine. I dont need people in my life who are dragging themselves down & in doing so going to drag me down with them. Not much sympathy from me.
I hope the mother realizes that she let this happen to her own child.

There’s so much appalling stuff here to comment on but I’m really stuck on the whole part about him being released if he promised to never get arrested again. Like, yeah, everyone who came in contact with him deemed him a menace and professionals declared he was and would likely remain a threat to children, but hey, we’re sure he’s not so morally bankrupt that he would violate his pinky promise to never do anything bad again, right?
The manner in which psychiatric hospitals turn people away is terrible. The lack of available counseling is pathetic...needed more than ever today due to drug use.
They don't really turn ppl away much at all, if ever. You can check yourself in any time you want. If you tell them you have a problem, specify what it is, and that you want to stay, you can absolutely stay for a long time. If you tell them your problem is not resolved, they won't send you away if it's serious enough. It can actually be quite hard to get out of them by your own free will at times. What are you referring to? I must've missed that, but I really don't think that's the case.

Ive watched a lot of your videos and this one is probably one of the saddest. This little girl was failed to be protected and brutalized in such a horrific way. The system created this crime by not keeping him locked away. Absolutely terrible. This was so preventable.

IF Donald were being genuine about just wanting Cherish to have the dress that she wanted then he would have paid for his items at the register and told the cashier that he wanted to pay for the dress the little girl was looking at and to please inform the mother during checkout that the dress has been paid for so her daughter can go and get it and put it in a bag to take home. He should have done this with no word to the mother and just said to tell the mother it's from someone that just felt compelled to help out. It's a win for everyone.

I remember this tragedy and I always felt the mother should've been charged as well. She basically "sold" her daughter to this monster because he paid for her items. I don't care how desperate things get for a parent, you just don't ever trust a stranger with your kids. The Mom had so many options like going to a church for help, finding food banks that offer free clothing, and or purchasing clothing from a thrift store, looking online for free clothing offers. No excuses.

The fact that Cherish was comfortable enough to separate herself from Rayne (Rain?) was proof enough Donald was extremely convincing or Cherish was at greater average comfortable around anyone else than Rain because her mother was not much for company or care. It's sickening all around.

Thank you for analyzing this case. I’m from Jacksonville FL and the Walmart they were at is one of the worst in the city. Very dangerous with people shooting up drugs and trying to rob people in front of the store. My mom probably wouldn’t let me leave her side and I’m a man in my thirties.
It is located near 295 ( the interstate around town), a bus stop, and about 10 min from a community college campus. Also, about 10 min from the airport. It’s a very transient and sketchy area.
Sadly, I’ve ate at that McDonald’s many times and now it’s so sad.
This is not the place your average parent would let their child go free.
It’s all so sad.

This is terrifying. I do not have any kids, but a man, claiming to have knowledge on car mechanics approached me during Covid19 and asked me if I am a single mom that needs rides during these rough times. My car obviously needed some repairs, but it was drive-able. I firmly told him, no I do not need rides, and no, I do not have any kids.
I remember this… there’s a longer study of this case that Dreading put out on his channel. This one haunts me. Praying for her and her family.

It is correct to use the first, and not the second word, because in a relationship you don’t have lots of people, right? It is very common to make that mistake but once you understand the meaning, you’ll never use the tumultuous word like that.
