    I'm in zone 5B on the southeastern tip of WI. I've planted 3 Chicago Hardy figs. My plan is to mulch heavily, cover plant with tarp, put a large tunnel of chicken wire around it, fill with dry leaves, and then tarp again. I'm hoping this will give it enough protection.

    I'm experimenting with planting Chicago Hardy figs in Zone 4/5 (central Maine) in-ground in the best location I can find, cutting down close to the ground in late fall/early winter and heavily mulching. Will be interesting to see how they do.

    I purchased two 14 inch Chicago Hardy trees last fall. They were dormant when I planted them in the yard in November 2020.
    While I live in zone 7, we had a pretty tough winter and I was worried if they would survive. I checked them this week and the main branches are green and budding. Hopefully they will produce figs this year 😋

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety +1

      That is fantastic! They do seem to be nice and hardy. We have a few figs growing on ours already as well. It is kind of amazing to see that quick turnaround. Stay tuned for an updated fig video in the not too distant future!

      @@GutenGardening They grew very fast this past summer (they are over 4 feet now). They both produced a decent amount of figs. Unfortunately the birds and squirrels got about half of them. I got some figs too, so overall I am happy. I'm thinking if I should prune them this winter or wait until next winter. If I don't prune them this winter, they will probably reach over 7 feet by the Fall. I don't want them to grow beyond 8 feet.
      I also planted one Olympian Hardy fig tree earlier this month. I was told they are about as cold hardy as the Chicago.
      So I am looking forward to the 2022 growing season. 😋

    I've got 2 figs of unknown origin - one in a pot & one in the ground. The one in the ground is several years old but smaller than yours, but it's had some challenges - Hurricane Matthew dropped an oak tree on it a few years ago - took 3 weeks with the chainsaw to find it! On top of that, I have an over abundance of shade on my property (but the hurricanes have tried to help with that as well).

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 3 lety +1

      @@GutenGardening I agree. The best investment I could imagine. We are so excited to learn more about figs. Back when we lived in New York, I was gifted some figs that were pretty much chopped up at the roots, and we planted them in the worst place in our yard with limited sunshine and limited care, and they grew! I just bought one of these bare roots! We live in Montana, zone 5, so planning to grow in a container and bring inside for the winter. I would love to know how yours has handled re-potting, and if you have advice for how to water (does it like a long slow water, or do you treat it more like a houseplant?) Thanks for the useful info!

      Here is a video that we did on the replanting and the results from the first year. :) czcams.com/video/9_z3OIcE_PA/video.html&ab_channel=GutenYardening As far as watering goes, when we moved it outdoors we watered it with the rest of the plants in the garden (hose) as needed. Indoors we water about once a week to make the soil moist. :)

    Thanks for the great info. I got one of these at the store but it's really tiny. The trunk is probably 3 inches long and 1/8 thick. Do I plant this directly in the ground or grow it first in a pot and transplant later when it's bigger? If I'm planting it outside, of course I'll put a protective net around it

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety +1

      If it is dormant, I think either way would be fine. We are keeping ours in a pot which is why we let it get started in the pot first. I don't think you will have a problem planting it in the ground, though, and I agree with you about some protective netting. :)

      I just did some research, and I found that there are several places in the UK that sell them but not have them in stock, which is very frustrating I am sure. This website allows you to put in your email for a notification for when it comes back in stock, so something like that might be your best option. gb-online.co.uk/neweshop/index.php?id_product=513&rewrite=fig-hardy-chicago-plant&controller=product I wish we could be more help.

    I have 6 fig trees planted outside in the ground. I’m in zone 5. They are about 5 yrs old and about 6’ tall about 6’ across . I usually loose a lot of my figs to frost in the fall. Mine seem to die back to the ground in the winter and get new growth in the spring. Is there a trick to get them to come on sooner so they can ripen before the frost
