- New owner of the Ottawa Senators, Michael Andlauer, just dropped a bomb about the NHL and his purchase of the Sens following the Dadanov draft pick scandal. All that and more discussed on today's NHL hockey video!

happy bday PARKER
If this constitutes the loss of a first round draft pick then how on earth did the Blackhawks manage to come out of their scandal unscathed. I swear the NHL sucks at matching the punishment to the crime.
I don’t understand how anyone would think these two situations are even comparable.
@@btgkg9639 I’m not sure if you’re saying this in agreement or disagreement but I’m pretty sure we are on the same page. How does a transaction error which is basically boils down to get more punishment then destroying the lives of young men. The NHL needs someone to evaluate the competency of those running the organization. While Ottawa is getting punished, Chicago is getting fast tracked and is the NHLs center of attention. Shame on the NHL.
Because there an original 6 team and the other is ottowa
@@andrews5236It's vastly different because what Ottawa did is a team/organisational/on ice issue. What happened with Chicago is an criminal/personel/off ice issue. The Hawks were fined the maximum amount set by the CBA (I agree that two million was not enough, but that's what has been set as the maximum fine, so there we have it), so giving up draft picks does not fit the crime so to speak. Every single person who were part of that incident have been fired or let go (once again they should've received a heftier penalty and should not be permitted to get back into the league anymore). TLDR: The penalty fits the crime, even if it was not enough.
Here's your answer: The Blackhawks are Gary Bettman's baby. The Senators are not. That's it.
it sounds like the NHL hid this until the Senators had an owner LOL
absolute scumbags
if there smoke, there's fire. I have no doubt they did. These same people agreed to a 10 year deal with fanatics so ethics and morals aren't their thing
I like this guy as an owner. Im sick of these big faceless groups buying teams and treating it like an investment, teams need an owner that isn't afraid to call it how it is publicly
100% agree. Regardless where people might sit re Dana White he's a face of an organisation and never holds back what he thinks (for good or bad) and for that there's a reason why people love the UFC. More owners or even GM's need to call out the NHL and Bettmans BS
Tell that to Fenway who owns my Pens. They could care less about the Penguins considering that the Red Sox and Liverpool make them considerably more money.
Yeah honestly, lowkey its a breath of fresh air to see someone this honest. Too bad he'll be getting a call from the NHL for this. At least there's a glimmer of hope there in the Sens management
*This is like me buying a used car from a dealership to find out over a year later that the dealership never told me it's key evidence for a hit and run and I'm being charged for the crime now.*
(Not sure if that's my best analogy to compare this mess to.)
It's a very good analogy.
Spot on.
Probably a better analogy would be the dealership saying it was involved in an accident but it was a "non-issue" and then a year later cops show up at your door.
@@DrinkingDuckDexterI got a better analogy… It’s like if someone inherited a team without knowing they were going to lose a draft pick
Maybe more of buying a house that the previous owner didn't have up to code and now your getting the fines after you moved in.
I’m not a Ottawa fan but this is a complete joke. They lose a 1st pick , GM gets fired for a simple mistake. Then they also suspend Pinto for gambling, when the league is endorsed by gambling. But Chicago covered up a sexual assault and it’s ok.
I’m a diehard hockey fan but the league is a joke
Everyone except some few southern teams are taking shots at the league. At least for once an owner does it. It was about time
Nah we are taking shots at the league too. How the league is handling this vs how they treated their original 6 golden boy covering up sexual assault within their organization for years is downright criminal.

Man what is the league doing to Ottawa. Two way over the top punishments in such a short period of time.
Was the Pinto punishment really over the top? The NHLPA negotiated a lesser punishment and everyone involved hasn't complained about the length/severity of it. Pinto was definitely being a naughty boy
@@justjohnny420yes. It was very over the top. Jameson williams got less than a quarter of the season for betting on team property in the nfl and even that was harsh.
@justjohnny420 because it's the nhl, if you complain you get fined and pinto can't afford that
I dont think it was over the top, however it seems unjust considering what other players have done to receive half season suspensions in the past. You can baseball swing your stick across the back of a guys head and receive less than 40 games. It also seems hypocritical with how hard the league advertises and shoves gambling down all of our throats. So if the league is happy to hand out 40 game suspensions to protect its pocket book where are the 40 game suspensions to protect player safety?@@justjohnny420
@@justjohnny420if pinto complains he gets fined and if he’s not playing he’s not earning money
Maybe they should have covered up sexual assault. That way they wouldn't get penalized and instead perhaps rewarded with a 1st overall pick.
Preach
Thanks for bringing it up, that should never be forgotten, the second worst thing that happened in NHL history after the Maple Leafs Garden pedophile ring
Honestly I hope Andlauer sues. A successful lawsuit could mean the end of Bettman, which would be amazing for the NHL.
Understatement of the year right there. Bettman should have been turfed years ago, but he delivers what most owners care about most… dollars. I so hope Andlauer sues and gets a big settlement, and I hope there’s something to indicate that Bettman was the root of providing false info or hiding info during the sale so there’s a reason for him to be fired. Unfortunately he’s smart and ultra-slimy so likely nothing will stick.
@@sjsomething4936 Bettman is an attorney. And the NHL has a legal team. I suspect Bettman knows just how far to the edge of legality he can go without going on or over the line.
@@craigslater2321Attorneys bet on other's ignorance all the time, and use their background to bluff as well.
I like your optimism. But the day they shitcan Bettman, he'll be replaced with a muppet with Bettman's arm so far up his arse he won't be able to sneeze without his approval. The whole NHL office staff has to go, and it wont happen
@@craigslater2321 unfortunately I have to agree.
Maybe NHL owners aren't supposed to say things like this, but they should. It would be quite refreshing to have candid exposure of the league, and instead of all this marketed, processed, scripted garbage we get in pro sports.
The Coyotes didn't go through such a filibuster when they lost their draft pick. Chayka was exposed for his violations of the rules, and the draft pick was forfeited very shortly thereafter, if not right away. That being said, I think that Andlauer has a very good point here, especially since that forfeited first round draft pick directly translates to lost revenue.
Wait... what's the story there?
@@atlasfeynman1039chayka who was the general manager of the yotes hosted a private combine for prospects which led to the them forfeiting a 1st rounder
Yes but it didn’t take 2 years for the NHL to punish the yotes
The League also gave a full explanation to the public on what exactly occurred, why it was wrong and against league rules and why the punishment fit with the Yotes. Here, they're just like "this is the ruling. No further comment." The league is just hiding their own incompetence.
Just remember, chicago did NOT lose anything for their BS, yet the NHL pulls this sh1t
It is crazy to think the hawks covered up a sexual assault and got gifted Bedard. But the Sens get a 1st rounder taken away for an administrative mistake
They did not get gifted Bedard, chances are the first rounder would have been taken away for the 2022 draft, and these situations are not very comparable as one is solely off ice and the other one on ice
Yeah one was hidden cause coaches and players thought a championship was more important than human rights. And all the NHL did was give them a fine. Should been a fine and multiple picks taken away from the hawks.
And while the other was just a administrative snafu gets a pick taken and it's a first rounder isnt a good look.
And how the NHL waited 18 months and after a new owner is a low blew.
First off, there was a fine given to the organization, and second, if you’re complaining about how the punishment was given 18 months after the fact, maybe you can see how fining a team multiple years of draft picks for something that had happened 10 years ago under completely different management might be a bit much. Not trying to say they shouldn’t have gotten more of a punishment, but what others have been proposing is insane.@@royaldoublemccheesie1876
@@LucyBatmanI don’t buy that for a second
Now the Sens are gonna get fined a ton of money for him speaking out. Stop bullying the Senators.
Love it. Need more owners like this calling out the NHL on their bullshit.
I’m an Anaheim fan, of course it’s sad the deal didn’t go through, but even I think a first round pick scratch is a little too harsh
It's not even the pick that matters. It's the timing. Why did it take over a year to come to that decision?
Oh, totally unrelated, the Senators were for sale and the loss of a draft pick would harm their value to a buyer. But now that they're sold, let's get back to that business.
The new owner should sue for failure to disclose the situation.
I've been wondering why Dadanov included Anaheim in his no-trade clause? Does he think they stink and doesn't want to be associated with them? Did he get sick on a ride in Disneyland (world?) and gets nauseated every time someone mentions "Anaheim?"
@@jimb.7523 idk but I’m gonna guess he just didn’t like Southern California, it’s not always ideal for hockey players for some reason despite the weather being perfect most the time. And I’d totally believe it if he didn’t wanna go there because they were bad, because prior to this year we’ve been terrible
Since what Ott did is not nearly as egregious as covering up years of coaches sexually assaulting players and CHI only had to pay a $2M fine, how about Ottawa pay a $500 fine for their clerical error and NOT A FIRST ROUNDER.
As a former Whalers fan who still has a grudge against Bettman and never adopted another team I think I will become a Senators fan
Bro, my heart goes out to you, that is rough. The Pens, my team, got lucky or I may never have became a Hockey fan.
Imagine punishing a team for withholding information that is pertinent to a transaction while withholding crucial information pertinent to the sale of that team. Little bit of hypocrisy. Especially because Andlauer was told it was a "non-issue"
The nhl is hypocritical. That's fact. They don't want you to learn what scandals some superstars did but they want you to know that they are against this type of behavior.
Clearly Bettman didn't want this ownership
A huge lawsuit coming the NHL's way and hopefully the new Sens owner sticks it to them
What’s infuriating about this entire bloody mess is that the Sens are being punished for “not revealing” the no-trade clause in Dadonov’s contract. They’ve pulled the same exact shyte with Andlauer, not providing him with the information he needed to make a reasoned assessment of the value of the club. The NHL is maybe letting Vegas off the hook for not doing their due diligence? I don’t have direct evidence of that, it’s all being hushed up and “handled internally “. How were the Sens supposed to know he was going to (attempt) to be flipped to the Ducks? If there was a question directly asked and the response was a lie, then Ottawa deserves some kind of punishment.
Andlauer stated plainly that his people did their due diligence, and if true (I’ve no reason to doubt his claim) the NHL in turn lied or hid materially relevant information from Andlauer during the sale, I hope he takes them to court and wins some decent compensation.
At this point who really thinks the NHL is being well run? Only probably the owners who are still making good profits for the most part. The rainbow tape debacle, this steaming pile of turd, the Black Hawks abuse scandal… they’re really doing a piss-poor job lately and there should be changes at the top, but owners are incredibly unlikely to do anything until the bottom line is at risk.
Had an administrative law class yesterday. From what I can extrapolate from that class and previous ones to this Ottawa situation, as well as my obligations law classes, the owners consent could have been undermined. He could get the contract terminated if he manages to prove that his consent was undermined. To prove his consent was undermined, he must prove, (1) bad faith from the NHL, and (2) that a revocked first round pick would have been an "essential element" to his consent. That said, there are probably other legal recources that dont involve the termination of the contract, but focus on damages for the prejudice of losing a first round pick without knowing it prior to signing. I should also add that this is not legal advice, Michael😅
I am sure he has his legal team on it
"(1) bad faith from the NHL"... that'll be the easy one to prove 😂
@@K-DUBYA just blame it all on Gary

He even appointed Trudeau to make sure Canada goes down path of totalitarian woke mind virus
“Extremely shady…” I fell this is a statement that pretty much everyone who’s ever interacted with Bettman has vocalized at some point in time.
Dangle said it right:
Best sport, worst run League
As a Sens fan, I’m used to all the weird stuff that happens around the team - but, I’m so curious to see what the legal repercussions could be. It’s an incredibly bad look by the league if that information wasn’t given during the purchase process.
It’s like if you went to buy a house, and the owners knew something serious was wrong and didn’t disclose it - you can’t do that.
When you mention a previous video will you link it in the description? I’m trying to follow hockey closer this year and your channel has been my favorite. Just like your Star Wars channels.
the league is really dropping the soap on the sens. the pinto suspension (contrast this to evander kane betting on his own games), the dadonov fumble (why didn't the league or PA have a copy of every players trade list in CC to the GMs) only to be hippocrites by not being transparent themselves in those matter during the sale.
good job gary. you're making roger look good
Players are allowed to bet though and majority of the details about the Pinto fiasco never got leaked out
They investigated Evander and found he WAS NOT betting on his own games... he just has a crazy ex wife who accused him of all kinds of stuff... however, I don't think Pinto deserves half a year for betting on football games.
Kane did not bet on his own games. He’s done a lot of stupid things before but he didn’t do that.
It almost seems like the rules and punishments are different if you are a large US market
I wonder if Canadian financial regulators would have an interest in what's gone down here. It certainly could be viewed as the league attempting to defraud a potential buyer out of a few extra dollars by not disclosing evidence that Pierre Dorion willfully misrepresented the status of Dadonov's no-trade list, whether on his own initiative or Eugene Melnyk's orders, in order to sweeten the pot.
Either way, I have a very hard time seeing Dorion finding another job, even with the GM Carousel Effect - between this and the top four's worth of skilled young defensemen other teams have acquired with draft picks traded by Dorion when Ottawa's biggest on-ice issue is defensive play, he's probably completely botched this rebuild. (Hence why I left them off my list of playoff entrants this year when others had them jumping in.)
Great work Eck! I love the extended video tonight! Cheers 🍻
Gary and the NHL being shady with the way they do things!!!!! Never
Shady move by Bettman and the NHL. They definiitely held off on punishment as not to jeapordize the sale of the team.
Honestly I am glad to see Michael Andlauer standing up and clapping back. As per usual the league is fucking over a Canadian team and I just hope that he doesnt give up on the team as a result. Its frustrating enough that we've had so much shit for so long but now we have a chance to finally rebuild only for us to be smacked about. Apparently its fine to SA your own player and cover it up but god forbid there be a slight issue in the contract. Fuck the league
What did he even say!?!?
He is ABSOLUTELY right to call the NHL out on this bs. Again some third world management that makes them look like bush league crap, like if the situation with the Coyotes wasnt already enough.
Complete bs, literally a few weeks after the sale suddenly an 18 months old trade magically reappears. 😡😡🙄
Hi Eck team. I am a huge hockey fan so I would just like to thank you for all this greta work you do and legitimately amazing content. Thanks so much for your videos.

“Vegas wants their pound of flesh”
The League took away a 2nd Rd and a 3rd Rd pick for the hiring of ChiaPete and Todd McLellan, then decided to rescind the rule promptly after the Oilers were fined. This ruling has an eerily similar feeling of a league that does not care about a level playing field and just does things nonchalantly.
I used to serve coffee to Staios on his way to games when he was with the oilers! He and Morrow would stop in at my Starbucks and get a coffee on the way to the arena during the decade of darkness and Steve was always super friendly and kind! Can not say the same about Morrow however! Staios stuck out as someone who didn't treat people like crap just cause they were working in a coffee shop!
I really think that Bettman will explain to Andlauer that the nhl is there to support the owners and at that time, Andlauer wasn't the owner of Ott sooooo. Now he is so now is gonna get protected if he can kneel. 🤷
“We have to penalize you because before you bought the team they messed up their paperwork?”
“Why wasn’t I told about this before I bought the team? I did my due diligence”
“We messed up our paperwork”
The NHL is the most inconsistent when it comes to its punishments. The coyotes lose a 1st and a 2nd I believe for illegal prospect testing. Ottawa losing a first for a trade. The blackhawks get no penalty for a corrupt coverup by management, players, coaches and staff for a sexual assault case… then draft Bedard! Like how does that make any sense 🤯
This AND the Pinto investigation was held from him since the team didn't know Pinto was being investigated till training camp. I would be annoyed as well.
Kinda ironic that the team is being punished for allegedly withholding information.
How ironic: the NHL withheld information that might have reduced the value of their offer in a deal that they were trying to make, which is exactly what they are punishing the Ottawa franchise for.
There should be consequences, but this is beyond what is reasonable.
You have to make a video on Marchands missed call on the leafs at the end of the 1st. It was terrible!!

The NHL’s lack of transparency on just about every single issue & ruling is absolute bush league.

To wait to give a penalty 18 months later…. After major sale billion bucks…. Should be downright criminal.. I’m a leafs fan and hate hate Ottawa and find this funny but dang man. It was straight up should be enough to land someone in jail.
So Sens get punished for “forgetting” the no trade clause so they can move a player….but the nhl then “forgets” to mention the future penalty to the org, so they can sell the team? Makes as much sense as getting suspended for using the product you endorse on your helmet…..

"No reason to last this long" it was a bit more than long imo but I totally agree
He could 100% sue the league for this. It’s shady as hell. And the Blackhawks should’ve been fined millions on top of other things for covering up sexual matters. And as for Shane Pinto, if you’re gonna suspend him for half the season, get rid of these damn non stop sportsbook commercials.
Welcome to Bettman's garage league.
Anyone who takes on the the NHL is OK by me.
They should have let The Weeknd buy the team 😂💀
Hopefully thats the last skeleton left over in the closet from the previous regime and the Sens can finally turn the page here and not have any more unnecessary off-ice drama for a while
bettman should be punted for this shit.
He is right though if the team was gonna be punished (they should be but a first-round pick is a wildly inappropriate punishment) it should've happened before the sale or not at all, a fine would have sufficed. The kicker is obviously Chicago getting a fine for covering up sexual assault, continually disappointed in how the NHL handles these things.
Two things can be true at once. The loss of the first-round pick is way too severe, and the league should have had this settled months ago. But, Andlauer knew this was still an outstanding issue and that anything could happen, and he (apparently) didn't bring this up during the negotiation.
Yooo you gonna cover the blue shirts win streak?;)
Planning on it definitely
Canadian teams beware. There taking first round picks for the US teams.
Two words: Gary Bettman.
The league’s communication needs to be a lot better and clearer about the rules, I would be livid if I liked the senators right now, and still am even though I’m not. NHL gonna NHL again

Eff the NHL
The NHL has just lost any ounce of credibility it ever had in my mind. No consistency in it's rulings and decisions; complete hypocrisy over the pride tape ruling and the Pinto suspension and giving out penalties for a mismanaged trade over a covered sexual assault scandal.
I feel for the new owner. Them hiding this from him as he buys the team is shady as fuck. I'd be outraged and would do everything possible to fight this.
Happy birthday parker
The problem with the nhl Gary buttman doesn’t care and won’t listen to anybody and he ruins hockey!!!
Losing a GM or a 1st round pick wouldn’t affect the value of the team at all….those are operational…..the team didn’t lose any value because of it….
Eck aren't you called somewhere?
Who are you suggesting he'd have an administrative law claim against? It would be contractual or tort based, not administrative.
