A soundtrack to the 1969 film of the same name, Pink Floyd's More produced such tracks as The Nile Song (their take on the emerging heavy metal genre) Cymbaline, Green is the Colour and several instrumental pieces. How does it hold up as an album? #pinkfloyd #albumreviews #historyofrock
Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd was the band's leader and chief songwriter in the early days, penning their first singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. This would lead to the release of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn, featuring classics like Astronomy Domine, Flaming, Bike and the epic psychedelic instrumental Interstellar Overdrive. Their live shows were equally inventive incorporating unique light shows. However due to Syd's intake of LSD mixed with a breakdown involving schizophrenia, he would gradually be pushed out of the band he fronted, being replaced with David Gilmour on guitar. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup with Roger taking more of a songwriter role, including the song Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun which would appear on their 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets. The album was the only to feature all five band members and Syd's final composition with Floyd, Jugband Blues. Their soundtrack to More came out in 1969. On Ummagumma, Pink Floyd was still finding their voice, focusing more on albums rather than singles, but still producing an occasional classic like Careful with that Axe Eugene. In 1970, Atom Heart Mother proved to be a success with the 23 minute instrumental and featuring Dave's song Fat Old Sun. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces, featuring a rare spoken vocal by Nick, Roger's echoing bass line and Dave's Slide Guitar. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972 with tracks like Burning Bridges and Free Four. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, likening three animals: Dogs, Sheep and Pigs to various classes of society. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd before he officially left, leaving Dave and Nick to reunite with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans with Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The album The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Pink Floyd's legacy has continued to inspire fans and aspiring musicians, myself included.

As for the album, it's pretty nice. I mean, it's a pretty early work. Considering they're all trying to find their feet, they did a good job. Obviously the Nile Song is the highlight, but Cymbaline is an underrated song.

I was at a 12 hour charity concert in the UK December 68. Floyd were like the headline act but they were not on until just after the pubs shut. It was also a Saturday night. Sure enough the skin heads and Bovver boys full of six pints of lager poured into the venue. Floyd started with Astronomy, all went well until the quiet organ bit, when the drunken newcomers started booing and yelling. Floyd followed this with 'Point me to the sky' at which point the previously angry crowd started cheering, they actually liked it. Floyd then stunned them by following up with Careful with that Axe. That was the first concert that I had seen Floyd with David Gilmore in the lineup.

Think you’re a bit hard on Cirrus Minor. Like much of the early Floyd, it was part of that great introduction ‘Relics’ that had a fantastic selection of early works, and therefore have a soft spot for Cirrus.
A shout out too to Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets. The Early Years box set (mainly bought digitally except for the Atom Heart Mother one) reignited my interest (and preference) for this period - and NMSOS produces great live versions of preDSOTM Floyd

The mixture of trippy instrumentals and 'normal' songs is because the film uses the trippy stuff as a regular soundtrack, and the songs as incidental background music. Like if someone has a radio on in one scene then it will be playing one of those normal pop tunes.

I already told you my favorites from this. I think I would include Green Is The Colour. David Gilmour's voice sounds like Ray Davies and a very nice flute from Mrs. Mason. And while I mentioned Cymbaline as a favorite, it kind of sounds like a commercial jingle in the 1970's for beer. Quicksilver is my least favorite from it followed by that goofy instrumental at the end of side 1.
Don't worry JT. Ummagumma is not a favorite of mine either but I still look forward to your review. I'll say some prayers while you must endure it. 🙏 You'll need them for Several Species Of Small Furry Animals!

The chap running the stall gve me the background, it was for a film, etc - ending by telling me it's not very good...i bought it, anyway, and remember really enjoying a lot of it, I still have that copy almost 30 years later.

I was late in discovering Pink Floyd and started in '79 with The Wall. I then started to buy their older albums and didn't think much of this middle period between the time just after the departure of Syd Barrett and Dark Side of the Moon. It was only later after I had outgrown the pessimism of those 70's album that began to find a renewed interest in this period. I think they made some of their most beautiful music. The albums themselves were a bit sloppy and rough but therein lies the charm. They were evolving as a band during this period. As noted Roger Waters was improving as a songwriter and the band was still clumsily searching for an identity away from their psychedelic origins. I disagree with the opinion expressed about Cirrus Minor; it is a hauntingly beautiful song. Green Is the Colour is among my favourite of their songs. I cannot defend the instrumental tracks too much, especially one titled A Spanish Piece, which sounds like it is being sung by Manuel from Fawlty Towers.
Most of the albums recorded during this period were recorded very fast and they lack the studio polish that would become a Pink Floyd trademark. One was recorded in a week. It was either this one or Obscured by Clouds. Both are greatly underrated and overlooked. I love them, flaws and all. Here we have the band at their most ethereal and dreamy. This is music for the mind.

I think the More soundtrack is rather underrated. It's the closest they ever got to pulling off an album of quality, classic 60s psychedelia without Syd, before veering into full on proggy space rock after the palette-cleansing Ummagumma. It may be a film soundtrack, but it almost resembles a more sedated and often unplugged sibling to Piper At the Gates of Dawn. Some of the band's trippiest moments are on this record. It's a bit dirge-like and ominous at times. If Piper at the Gates of Dawn was a trip, More is the morning after. Not for easy listening. But very rewarding. Far better than than the messy Saucerful of Secrets.

I've set up at least 5,000 guitars (and that's a conservative estimate) not all of them Strats and not all of them electrics but though I couldn't say for certain that Gilmour's guitar in this video isn't out, I'd be fairly sure it's not a long way out. I hate intonation to be out which is why I only used Rotosound strings briefly.

It’s… an interesting album… is really all I can say about this album, ofc, I love The Nile Song and Cymbaline and whatever the other song that sounds alot like the Nile Song is called (I don’t remember) but to me, most of these songs just don’t work

I can honestly say I've been Pink Floyd fan since Momentary came out. But, IVE NEVER heard or bought this Album. It's the only Floyd Album I never owned. I bought Ummagumma before this when I was younger, and after that disappointment I just skipped this period. I really don't think I missed out on anything. But, Meddle definitely started my favorite period of Floyd, and of course Dark Side goes without saying.

Ummagumma's always been my favourite ;)
More was the cradle of all new things and I believe The Man and The Journey suites were a masterpiece but I only knew of them from books back then. It took decades before I could hear a complete recording.

I was at a performance of the 'Man and the Journey', June 1969. It is easier to recall and remember the performance art rather than the songs, such as having a tea break on stage and sawing up bits of wood. Never released on record or film. However the songs are on You Tube if you care to search them out.

I love that ending! 😂😂😂 Ummagumma definitely isn’t that good. The live songs are definitely overrated imo, and the experimentation is… interesting…

"More" is actually a good album with good songs and interesting experimentation for the time too. A great look at other Floyd sides. The opener sets the mood for the album. It is not a heavy rock album but reflective and very creative. They tried a lot of different things. The blues stuff is nice and just sets a cool background sound. Main Theme and Dramatic Theme are fantastic pieces. The film is embarrassingly crappy and the music is not utilised to try and rescue it.
