  • Get your headphones on, we're hearing the subtle and not so subtle differences that mic placement can have on the sound of your toms.
Today we're using one of the most popular microphones for toms, the Sennheiser 421.
Would love to hear in the comments which mic position you preferred and which ones you thought were completely unusable.
Thanks for watching, please subscribe. Thank you!

I totally agree with your placement choice. Sound goodness jumped out immediately. It is said that 421's are great snare mics as well.
Album quality sound and drumming at the end by the way.

Thanks, Fred! I was surprised at how much of a difference it made when I moved the mic down a bit from where I normally place it for recording toms. The snare as well. I've only tracked a few songs using the 421 on the snare. I like the sound but the bleed is a little hard to control with the 421. There is a new mic out from Lauten Audio that I can't wait to try for the snare. Appropriately named, Snare Mic. It's said to have 28db of off-axis rejection. Looking forward to giving that a go.
And thank you for the kind words on the mix! Even though I've been working at it for years I still feel like a newbie. Much appreciated. :)

Brad, nice video...thanks! I think I preferred the mic pointing towards the center, as well. I would have liked to hear the differences with you playing the full kit as you did on the last part of this video....that may have helped (me at least) with which I preferred most. Always interesting to hear and see these types of videos...appreciate it, and I'm looking forward to your next videos.

Thanks, Mark!! I appreciate you checking it out! I agree with you about playing the full kit to show the differences. I was concerned about making the video too long. Next time. :)
Next week I'm playing the entire kit. Should be a fun one! Thanks again, and thank you for subscribing!!

    Pointing towards center seemed ideal!!!!

I agree! I really hear the biggest difference with the 1/2" towards center example. I expected it to not sound all that good. It totally works though! :)

Same here 421's about an inch pointed at the center... I would like to experiment with 421's top and bottom and see what happens.

Whenever I mic the toms on both top and bottom it works really well. Sounds amazing! The problem is, I don't have enough mics or mic preamps to make it happen. Let me know how it works for you when you try it.

Same here... I'm gonna have to try it with one rack tom and one floor tom to make it happen.... cheers! @@RecordingDrumsWithBrad
