A friend?!?!
@@colonless7512 “my mother was a robot ...and my father was...a transformer.”
Nice circle!
OMG, he shot himself in the center of his head. He must have known Neil Breen was coming for him.
What’s the time code for what you’re referring to?

I can’t help you outta this one!
@@Edax_Royeaux haha thanks
I CAN'T BELIEVE HE COMMITTED SUICIDE
I loved this movie as a kid, still kinda do. Big nostalgia for this one. "Achilles!"
You can't be a mech lover and not have a soft spot for this movie! ^_^
Agreed 💯
As a BattleTech fan, I always enjoyed this movie.
“Crash and burn!”
Same here!
Listening to you guys gush over one of my favorite movies as a kid is both validating and heart warming. Not sure what my problem is now, but I had good taste as a kid.
i loved this movie as a kid, and frankly i still watch it every so often, few movies have ever captured my imagination so well that a 90 minute movie feels like a 30 minute TV episode like this one
Holy crap. This unearthed some deep buried memories of catching this movie on TV many years ago.
You'd think the Gundam operators would be very well-paid, but no, it's "Hey, you didn't get smashed by a giant robot-here's a bean wiener." What did the other guy get? Taco Bell?
Well you see, after the franchise wars…
this is the future vegans want
Speaking of Star Trek the actor who played Achilles later played Ambassador Soval in Star Trek: Enterprise
Prenatal is actually a company. It could be a product placement, although one of the most weird decisions ever. Why would a babies clothes company advertise in a movie like this?
This and Megaforce are up there as "the greatest 80s B-Movies of all time no question"
I specially love the RCA/Péritel adapters hot glued on both gloves, in the final shot.
I think the poster with the pregnant woman is actually ingenious, it plays on the irony of the 'sex sells' model of business advertisement, with the irony being both products are essentially being used to sell each other.
"She looks like Christopher Walken"
*Kyle does passable Woody Allen impersonation*
The concept of robot fighting between nations is actually based on the anime mobile suit gundam G, and it's a very good show with emotional set pieces and critical commentary about pollution and overpopulation. Highly recommended
(Update:thay actually mentioned it, great job)
G Gundam launched in 1994, Robot Jox released in 1989
Stuart Gordon is actually really notable for making shitty old films with an insane level of care to practical effects
I was pleasantly surprised Kyle knew the cheesy gem that is G Gundam.
I think the one bit of world-building you missed was that almost none of the population can read. If you look around, there are almost no printed words in the movie. There are a few ads with super simple words, but almost nothing else.
They bring up that Achilles can't read, Achilles' brother has a dope sealed library because he is one of the few people who can read. Achilles says a quick throwaway line "hows the reading business?"
The "They all signed the waiver" line about the dead spectators is that much more heartless since NONE of them knew what they were signing!
John De Hart probably thought that movie was going to make him the next Billy Ray Cyrus, gonna be tough to follow the last episode.
Can’t believe it’s already been 150 episodes, really glad you guys kept at it. Great video, as always :)
Holy shit, Robot Jox! I've never heard a single person mention this since I saw it at a friends house when I was like 10. Wow.
Another one I remember renting consistently well from my video store days. The good parts are good, it's just hampered by the bad parts being SO bad... Also, the 'sequel' Robot Wars is going to be an episode of the upcoming new MST3K season, so there's that to look forward to!
This is one of those movies that I’m pissed I didn’t know about when I was a kid. It’s a fun watch now so back then I would have absolutely loved it.
Steven Seagal doesn't need to be one of the Robot Jox, he can just use his Ai Ki Do on the enemy robots and make them explode.
How are you guys retroactively saying Robot Jox is like Pacific Rim and Mobile Fighter G Gundam when it came before those IPs? You're right about none of these concepts being terribly original but the chronology is messed up. It's like saying the Roman Empire wasn't original because America, fuck yeah!
Robot Jox… so… so GOOD 😊
Remember a big poster for this in the Blockbuster.
Man this is my childhood
- The secret weapon sub plot is for nothing. The blinding beam is used in the final fight and works, but Athena just stands there and does not use the advantage, Alexander then wrecks her. So the doctor's plan was pointless and he dies for nothing.
- Achillies screams about getting into the mech kicking Alexander's ass. He then proceeds to hit it with pretty much two weak little hits but gets his mech utterly destroyed. Alexander beats both of them! (This is slightly negated by how Achillies beats him on foot with ONE hit)
- The main reason for this film happening (the spectators being crushed causing a rematch and a "draw") makes no sense, the rules clearly state that projectile weapons are no longer allowed, Alexander uses it clearly before anything else happens DQ'ing himself. Achillies wins and his final fight is over.
Still love the film though, it has such a lot of love put into it.
Star of one of the best sci-fi tv shows of the 90s, alien nation
Great Value Gene Hackman
It was a success to many of us Battletech fans!
I literally watched this for the first time a week ago, and now you guys post this!
Still love Robot Jox. A staple of my teenage years.
Kyle has so many hilarious ideas to make this even better he should always write 80s movies as a job bahahah
Cuz of COVID madness id forgotten about you guys! Thankfully im recovering from mass COVID propaganda and so happy I'm back listening and watching your show! Missed the fun!
That jungle gym climbing segment I've always related to like when the Naval cadets climb the giant greased pole. It isn't really a training thing as it is some sort of honor to win.
Fun fact… the original poster and ads EMPIRE used for pre sales… WAS titled “ROBO JOX”. You can find the images on the internet and the ads on eBay.
I remember renting this as a kid, and thinking it kicked ass then. As an adult (and owner of the blu ray), I can confirm that it kicks ass still. You gotta admire any movie that doesn't let its budget get in the way of its ambition, and to their credit, the entire cast sells the hell out of it.
I always used to see the vhs of Robot Jox at Blockbusters when I was a kid but my Dad never let me watch it and when I asked why he just said you’ll understand when you get older. Now at 26 I still hesitate to watch it even after seeing it was available on Tubi.. Idk why I guess I just don’t want to ruin the mystique. Maybe I’ll watch it when I’m an old man lol
I love that this movie is roc em sock em+ pacific rim + halo
Step 1: Watch The Toybox (2018). Step 2. Laugh.
My guy Jeffrey Combs 😊❤️
Like the Bad Movie Fiends RRRRRROBOT JOX
There was a sequel to this called crash and burn made in 1990 directed by Charles Band. It was bloody awful though
“You make my drink taste like blood.”
The first fight is in Siberia. The later fights are in Death Valley.
This was the movie in my early 90s kid hood That I remembered for being the Cheesiest Awesome Sci fi. The Stadium collapse killing babies to Old was almost Paul V like directing.
The "American" side is called the Market
SHINING FINGEEEEERRRR
There are actually three sequels, Robot Wars, Robo Warriors and Crash and Burn. Two of them are also called Robot Jox 2, and one is Robot Jox 3.
If you're at all familiar with Battletech, then this movie will seem very familiar.
Alexander is totally a Gene Hackman look alike
The far distant future of 1999.
31:45-55, The Real reason why Kyle equates this to "Logan's Run". Carousel.
I agree that in the news clip scene with Alexander, the lighting makes him favor Gene Hackman a little, but the rest of the time, not so much.
I see it
One of the writers is Joe Haldeman. That’s a fairly renowned author of science fiction and apparently Stuart Gordon made enough changes to his screenplay to get a writer’s credit. Haldeman: "to me it's as if I'd had a child who started out well and then sustained brain damage".
I was wondering if Stuart Gordon was related to Bert I. Gordon but apparently not. Carolyn Purdy-Gordon was Stuart’s wife, was in many of his films, and usually played a character that got killed.
I rented this movie like 3 times as a kid and video island gave me the poster
As a Mecha fan the designs of the robots aren’t bad, except the chainsaw cock bot that can go to straight hell.
This must be your first Stuart Gordon film...
This must be your first Stuart Gordon film...
The music sounds like "thunderbirds" music intro
Written by Joe Haldeman who also wrote the classic science fiction novel The Forever War.
Grew up with this movie, same time as I found a Mechwarrior game on a shareware floppy disc. Still playing Battletech and Mechwarrior games to this day.
“Information is ammunition!”
Terrible, terrible movie.......that I absolutely LOVE!
Also Starring Jeffrey Coombs. Blink and you'll miss it.
Memorable Quotes from Robot Jox:
- Tex (After Hercules dies): Damn bastard. Didn't have to kill him.
- Tex: Soils just dirty. All the rest of team is dead.
- Alexander: [to Achilles] I kill you already!
[taps head]
Alexander: In here! (Laughs)
- Tex: Will you tell him to stop saying that? It's bad luck to say good luck.
- Alexander: Ah Achilles. Drinking to forget?
- Tex: I'll see you in hell.
- Tex: GERONIMO!
GREAT MOVIE
The “Athena/Patroclus gets mad at Achilles, dresses up in his armor, and loses/dies in a battle” is ripped straight from the Iliad. They just made it Patroclus a woman
22:50, I was hoping Kyle said " Space Mutiny".😅
Good job
Kyle does a great Woody Allen
Band did another big robot movie called Crash and Burn, sometimes also called Robot Jox 2
you missed that in 1989 is when the Berlin Wall come down , the fall of the USSR
There are three movies in the series. Crash and Burn, Robot Jox and Robot Wars.
Oh my gosh they're fighting over my home state XD
There’s another movie set in this timeline called Crash and Burn, which in my opinion deserves some recognition.Check it out,if you haven’t already.
I would love to see a conversation about why movies that have bombed years ago become cult classics today..
Nostalgia helps, but most of all just people that love looking at this stuff years later. Marketing has so much to do with a movie bombing, and the lack of avenues back in the late 80s didn’t help. And worst of all, sometimes you only got one copy at the video store and never got a chance to see it. 🤣🤣🤣
I remember being exited to see this at the movies when it came out. I was like 12. I left the theater disappointed. Guess I expected more robot fighting and was letdown.
I like this movie, I have the Blu-Ray!
So do I!
One of my prized possessions as a kid was the plastic 3d embossed Robot Jox poster I had gotten from a relatives video store.
Unfortunately it did not survive the years. I dunno if it was the type of plastic it was made of or sun damage or what, but I dropped it once when moving it and the thing fucking exploded like dropping a ceramic plate. It was ridiculous.
It may be a B movie but you can see that the director and crew did put a lot of work into it.
This movie is so good bad
Kyle and Brian,
I've just noticed that you haven't reviewed any movies for Disney. I have some ideas for you to talk about in your upcoming episodes:
- Gone Fishin' (1997)
- Mr. Magoo (1997)
- Meet the Deedles (1998)
- My Favorite Martian (1999)
- It's Pat: The Movie (1994) Yes, this was by Disney. It was under the Touchstone Pictures logo, so it counts.
“fist bump”
I wonder what Neil Breen's take on giant robots would be...
Could the 'jumbo gym' as you called it, is out of commission. Is it possible if the robot is damaged and they need to climb out of the robot? The inside could heat up, water leaking through pipes, and even oil leaking from somewhere be an issue if they need to climb through it?
Bmf cast rates movies based on this movie. Robot jox score means it’s a good bad movie.
9:20 so this is basically Halo but with rock-em sock-em robots
You guys really gotta watch more Stuart Gordon stuff. It’s mostly stuff like this.
Watched this when I was a kid, and didn't see it again until five years ago. Still loved it.
When I saw that you guys were reviewing it, I thought you were gonna hate it. So glad you thought it was actually a pretty good movie. Not even a bad one kinda.
🙂
These movies didn't really get a real thetrical release... they made all their money on rentals back then.
Also, that fist bump/thumbs up should be a thing. Maybe not the 'crash and burn' part.
yay
28:10, Total Rekall like. This filmed was released around the same time.
Robot Jox exactly tank the company, although it helped. Empire Pictures was going bankrupt when the film was made in 1987 and it wasn't released until 1990 because of this. Charles Band sold all of Empire Pictures and lost the rights to nearly everything, including Robot Jox. Robot Wars was an unofficial sequel from his new company, Full Moon Features (despite what Wikipedia said before I fixed it). Charles Band's book, "Confessions of a Puppetmaster: A Hollywood Memoir of Ghouls, Guts, and Gonzo Filmmaking" has details of the company situation but he doesn't get much into Robot Jox.
Oh, you "fixed it." Good on ya, chief.
Many details of this movie's setting are suspiciously similar to but legally distinct from BattleTech. Which is a tabletop miniatures mech combat game that came out in the early 80's and has retained cult status to this day with tie in novels, and video games. The titular BattleTech (2018) PC tactics game is excellent, and recent mech piloting sim titles Mechwarrior 5 (2019) and Mechwarrior Online are both...fine.
Bryan looks stoned. Are you stoned in this one, Bryan? You should do an episode lit. Even if it takes you 4 hours to record it all, it would be fun to watch.
I'm not sure if you guys watch a lot of anime but this movie is literally just G-Gundam.
I'd probably watch it, looks interesting.
This movie makes me miss Titanfall 2 multiplayer🥺. What a good pairing to the upcoming TFiL Patreon episode though. Pacific Rim is probably one of my favourite “watch every year for pure fun” movies.
Crash and Burn (1990)
