  • World-Class guitarist Tuck Andress is primarily a self-taught artist who learned by playing with other musicians, listening to records, and experimenting. A master musician to the highest degree, Tuck has a unique and very distinctive "staccato" approach to his playing, as he shows here. For more on Tuck, go to his MUSICMAKERS page at www.StudioJams.com.

Amazing ideas from a guitar genius. It is important to remember that the staccato martial arts style is a great complement to Patti's extraordinary voice.

By far, Tuck is one of my all time favorite guitarists. Saw him and his wife Patti at Blues Alley in Washington DC several months ago and fell in love with them. Such a beautiful couple.

Ok this guy is a genius. Musician AND communicator. You can't avoid learning something from this. I'm seeing where Charlie Hunter gets a lot of his approach.

Tuck once mentioned his mentor in a video.
      A dude named Tommy Crook.
I finally saw Crook on film myself and he was playing a Switch Master with two bass strings installed on the bottom end.
The Charlie Hunter thing rings true to be sure!

I first saw Tuck back in 1985. I was in a club sitting no more than 20 feet from him. I was blown away and now he is one of my favorites.

There's a story about Art Tatum where one classical pianist transcribed one of his pieces (was it Aunt Hagar's Blues?) and played it for Tatum, and Tatum said, "Can you play it like this?" and put in all kinds of variations. The classical pianist was aghast (and deflated) and said, "When did you figure out *that* version?" Tatum smiled and said, "Just now."

One of the most blessed L5s.
Most of them wind up with Dentists and other prosperous no-talents.
This L5 is in the hands of a musician who can very credibly demand changes on the basis of his outlying skill set and pretty intense comprehension of what's happening with the instrument.
Most players, an L5 is a better guitar than they are a player.
In this case, the instrument is subsumed by the working musician.
    That's how it should be.

You're awesome, Tuck: I still remember your show in Eindhoven, many years back. Your wife was amazing too but as a guitarist myself (sort of..) I can appreciate your style a bit more. The left hand staccato is just so more rhythmic!

With that remark you've just inspired me...besides that mountain called Art Tatum

I have gone to Blue Note and listened to Tuck and Patti. His guitar has never given a decent sound, imho. Nor live, nor in recordings. Pat Metheny rules for sound. Pity. Nevertheless, he had a unique style . Nowadays, his style is widely used by almost every finger picker.
