  • As New York voters cast their ballots in the city’s primary elections this year, they’ll have the option of ranking five candidates instead of choosing just one. It’s called ranked-choice voting, and its advocates say it promises to improve democracy as we know it.
    In a traditional voting system, voters select just one candidate. With ranked-choice voting, they rank candidates in order of preference. Here's a closer look at how it works. Read more: wapo.st/2SMP9z6. Subscribe to The Washington Post on CZcams: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

    Ranked Voting ✅:
    -Would make gerrymandering exceedingly difficult. Because nothing is absolute.
    -Give Third parties a chance.(giving more voting options.)
    -Eliminates winning presidency by default because split voting.
    -There would be no such thing of "throwing away a vote."
    -No more run off elections that cost money and everyone's time.

    I can’t wait till rank voting is nation wide. Finally some progress is being made to our voting system.

    WE NEED RANKED CHOICE VOTING. A change to this broken government starts with ranked choice voting.

    Do we still need primaries with ranked choice voting?

      From what I understand it eliminates the need for primaries.

    I like it, and I wish we used ranked choice in my home county of Arlington, VA. It's primarily D, but our board of 5 directors is almost always completely D. Other minority representation (R, L, G) do not get a seat and it's unfortunate. A composition of even 4 Ds and 1 Other would better reflect the views of the county residents.

      You are in luck because GA new voting law SB 202 implemented ranked choice voting for military & overseas voters, and a Republican state senator wrote this in the law to shorten runoff election & made them cost effective.
      He is also the same Republican in GA state senate that is currently working on a bill to make instant run-off voting universal for every single Georgian.

    This type of system just strengthens the two major parties. They get your vote no matter who you vote for. Pretty slick.

    • @Klako-ls6yt
      @Klako-ls6yt Před rokem +6

      No it doesn't. It strengthens third parties because it removes the the spoiler effect. Normally, voting third party only serves to hurt the major party you are more aligned with. For example, a conservative voter who votes Libertarian is hurting the Republicans in the election. This dissuades voters who may prefer a third party from actually voting for a third party, because they know, especially if they're in a swing state, that voting for a third party helps the opposition party.
      With ranked voting, a conservative voter who prefers the Libertarians over the Republicans can still cast their vote for the Libertarians without hurting the Republicans, since they can put the Republican candidate as their 2nd choice. If/when the Libertarians get eliminated from the election, this voter's vote will go to the Republicans. Third parties can become legitimate voting options under ranked voting.

    • @flyer3455
      @flyer3455 Před rokem

      @@Klako-ls6yt In your example, it just hands over libertarian votes to a polarized Republican party. It reinforces the two party system. There's other ways to do runoffs that prevent this from happening.

    • @Klako-ls6yt
      @Klako-ls6yt Před rokem +1

      @@flyer3455 It only takes Libertarian votes and gives it to Republicans when the Libertarian candidate gets eliminated; if the Libertarian candidate were to outperform the Republican candidate, the Republican candidate would get eliminated. Each round, the least voted candidate gets eliminated, and their votes get redistributed to the next preferred candidate on the ballot. This is what allows someone to vote for a third party without helping an opposition party.

    • @flyer3455
      @flyer3455 Před rokem +1

      @@Klako-ls6yt your rationale also assumes that people vote on a political spectrum.

    • @josephp.1919
      @josephp.1919 Před rokem

      @flyer. They do.
      But that still doesn’t matter because even if they didn’t we would still just end up with the option the largest number of voters hate the least. In other words we wouldn’t have extremists winning elections. You might hate that but extremists always do. It will be better for our democracy in the long run to have people win elections that have the least amount of voters hating their guts
