By the mid to late 90s,the Disney Renaissance was… on its way back down in terms of popularity. But amongst the more questionable movies arose one of the most interesting movies they ever made, based on a historically significant novel. It was wildly out there for what a family friendly company like Disney was expected to produce, so today, we're going to take stock of what's what. I'm Jeremy and these are 107 facts you should know about Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Sad that Disney doesn't have the balls to do things like this anymore, this era was when Disney animation was at its peak
True.
The 90s was the best era for Disney
If they tackled heavy subjects, people would call it “woke pandering” or indoctrination.
@@jamesparker1127 I feel like the reason why Disney would green light this is because Jeffery Kazenberg mostly cared about earning awards. Which also led to the Prince of Egypt.
Now they care about 3d trauma instead of 2d trauma lol
Frollo and Lady Tremaine are suprisingly real representations of how abusive parents manipulate their children even tough they are animated characters
Don’t forget Mother Gothel as well.
And there's Scar: the manipulative uncle
Also Mother Gothel in Tangled
Mother Gothel too (Tangled)
Except they’re guardians
Mother Gothel was also a mother but never to Rapunzel since she kidnapped her for the golden hair with the flower
An addendum about Esmeralda: though it is true that in the book she was kidnapped by the Romani (and 16 for that matter), Disney is not the first to make the change. A 1956 film adaptation of the story also has her as a genuine Romani woman and most productions have aged her up .
Despite the tone problems, this is my favorite Disney animated movie because it really pushed the limits of what story could be told in the animation medium. Considering 2-D animation's not favored by big studios in the west anymore and Disney's identity has grown to be a mainstream audience pleasing content machine, we're never going to get another one like it at least from WDAS.
Use yw to get a good job of doing good things Iw
I’m gonna whoop my finger andt and I’m just oh yeah I’m oh
Maybe Esmerelda’s red dress, being a color the Romani consider bad luck, might’ve been a sign that something bad would happen to her. It’s kinda a sign of danger when something is red. (Then again, they probably wouldn’t want her to dress in that color in the first place if it’s a bad omen…)
Well, she might have worn it since it’s topsy turvy day. Even the taboo would be encouraged.
@@powerist209 which, ironically, did end badly for her…
Agree strongly with #1. That final "Bells of Notre Dame!" ALWAYS gives me chills.
Notre Dame in 2019: burns
Frollo: *Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design*
While it never made it to Broadway, there is a Hunchback of Notre Dame musical that is very good. It includes the original Disney music but has additional songs to fill it out. There was even a Seattle production of the musical that included both deaf and hearing actors.
03:52 Even better - the latin sung in Frollo song is Confiteor, where Christians confess to God and saints that they have sinned and ask humbly for forgiveness. All while Frollo denies any of his doing is his fault and tried to blame Esmeralda instead.
Darn, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame was ahead of it's time.
yep
Stephen Schwartz would go on to write the songs for DreamWorks animated masterpiece "The Prince Of Egypt". Esmeralda remain as one of my most favorite Disney character in history.
She even deserves to be a Disnwy princess.
It’s still one of my favorite Disney Films. It didn’t try to sugarcoat how bad Frollo but made changes to source material necessary so that it made sense.
Frollo has to be one of the best villains to be written. He inspired an original character of mine and would likely inspire more. I can't thank my bf for making me sit and watch this. I understand now why it's one of his favorites.
I remember this movie mad me cry as a kid with how upset and sad it made me. 20 years later, and not only is it now my favorite Disney movie to date, it was the movie that set the tone for the kinds of media I typically enjoy to this day.
The western world has great animated movies & shows in the late 90s & early 2000s. Like Hunchback, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Iron Giant, Beauty & the Beast, Mulan, Tarzan, Pocahontas, etc, then companies got too dependent on cg
Number 1: it's an underrated film.
Technically, there is a Broadway adaptation. It was actually made by Disney, has all of the songs from the Disney film, however, it does include many aspects of the book as well because they bring back Frodo’s brother and they have an ending closer to the end of the book
I thought Febus was coming back from the crusades. And SpongeBob's Bill Fagerbakke has a line or two in the movie.
Hellfire is one of my favorite Disney Villain songs
Truly an underrated classic!
I was literally about to say that 👍👍🏻👍
I'm actually shocked there wasn't a "Disney Dark Secrets" on this. Maybe because it was already dark as it was.
Wow, kudos to Demi Moore for insisting they get a singer. There is absolutely no shame in admitting that you can't perform a song up to standard, especially if you did try your best. Some actors would probably be too proud to do that.
I think part of the reason Frollo had so much power was that he was the minister of justice for Paris not just a judge
Hunchback of Notre Dame was very different from other Disney movies. It was very dark because it was full of religion, genocide & torture
Hunchback of Notre Dame was also very shockingly nominated for a 1997 Razzie for Worst Film Grossing Over $100M. Thankfully though, it lost to Twister.
Hot take: Hunchback of Notre Dame and Twister neither deserved that Razzie.
This is one of my top 3 favorite Disney movies. I love every part of it and I wish I could cosplay Esmeralda. She's a badass to me.
5:56 oh god too bad its would make munch sense but that would have made such an awesome crossover!
Charles Laughton makeup in the 39 version might be an influence to Quasimodos design in the Disney movie, but no one’s pointed that out yet so I thought I should
This and Atlantis The Lost Empire are my two favorite Disney movies
same
Same.
Finally, I was wondering when you'll get to that movie. Plus a bonus fact: Derek Jacobi played Frollo in the Anthony Hopkins adaptation from Hallmark.
3:27 Hellfire
Hellfire is considered the darkest Disney song. It was almost cut
I’m surprised that this hasn’t already been made.
There was a stage adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It was played at Berlin, and then had a English performence at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. They was only never a Broadway run.
Had the American version used the James Lapine book (Berlin) it would’ve gone to Broadway.
@@MovieEnforcer no, Michael Arden played the role of Quasimodo.
@@BeaufortRyan You could still keep Michael Arden as Quasimodo using the James Lapine script rather then the inferior Peter Parnell script.
My favorite renaissance era Disney film, hands down.
Can't believe you didn't mention Patrick Star's voice actor having a cameo in this movie.
although this was like 2 or 3 years before the piolet was even recorded. But in the same breath that episode of Spongebob with the bad breath hits way different now.
I just saw this movie for the first time and all i can say is it's absolutely amazing.
Wait, We forgot to talk about how it’s direct to dvd sequel. Oh wait a minute, we don’t talk about those do we?
There is no sequel. What are you talking about?
@@Dysfunction2860 yeah............
It only took another 10 years but Disney got dark again like The Black Cauldron! From the wickedly delightful Frolo to the beautiful art and orchestra, this is a great Disney Classic!
Once you see the crowd you can never unsee that horror ever again.
Sometimes when you are in a dark place , you think that you are buried but you have actually been planted ...
If you are going through that hard time , just know that I am cheering for you ...
Love from a self - development youtuber 💖
thank you to this youtube channel for making my childhood the way that it ir
This has been my favorite disney movie my whole life. It is so underrated and under watched just because it doesnt have a frilly princess in it
Tom Hulce is excellent as the voice of Quasimodo. 😀👍
Here's some other facts in The Movie too when we see Frollo Guards shooting Arrows at Phoebus when he was Riding Snowball we see the Helmet The Soldiers are wearing is Similar to The Imperial Death Star Guys, & The Red Hooded Guys Frollo talk to In the Song they look like Darth Sidious too thou.
Frollo actually does resemble Palpatine a little bit.
Bonus fact: This movie, which had gargoyles in it, came out in 1996, which was the last year of the Disney TV show Gargoyles.
I squeeeeeed so hard when I saw this. Hunchback has been my absolute favorite since I was 4 😍😍😍😍
I was lucky to see it in a theater when it was released. Powerful yet still fun. The animation is breathtaking
With all due respect, i’m happy that 107 facts is back and there were a LOT of cool things learnt from this video, i feel some facts could’ve been condensed together (ie: one facts stating the gargoyles were almost named after previous Quadi actors then the next fact stating they were named that in the german version). Still a great video, just my two cents. Keep up the good work and i hope this doesn’t sound rude; that was not my intent.
I know. I remember seeing this kind of stuff years ago. I hope next time he can try to do maybe 107 facts about something like Demon Slayer, Date A Live, Soul Eater, Neptunia, Silent Hill, or whatever else hasn’t been done yet.
@@dreamfirefight9456 Fun Fact: Soul Eater was inspired by Tim Burton.
You have the right voice and character for this darker post, not so wildly light and enthusiastic as in other Disney ones. Very well presented.
This is without a doubt my favorite Disney movie of all time and favorite animated movie of all time
So incredibly underrated
4:02 "Mea Culpa" is not used in Court or Roman-Catholic Confession, at least to the best of my knowledge. Mea Culpa is used in the Roman Catholic Mass though, both ordinary and extraordinary, assuming Latin is used.
We want 107 facts about the Castlevania anime! 7 wasn't enough!!!
There is a Broadway production that. I listen to the soundtrack all the time. Its more correct to the book and actually better than the movie.
A star walks into a black hole but doesn't seen phased. The black hole then turns to the star and says, "I don't think you understand the gravity of this situation."
As a kid I didn't like this movie at all yet as an adult I found this movie relatable last year during the pandemic and I kept on listening to out there on repeat .
As a person with a disability I sympathized with Quasimodo whenever I'm in certain situations.
he was such a sweetheart and I would've loved to be his friend
you added a picture of Heidi Montag, she’s a mtv reality star from the show “The Hills”
10:34 just wanna point out a minor mistake but that’s an image of Snowball, not Achilles.
I really wish these videos came in articles too. I would love to read them. Not necessarily watch them.
1:15 "When the Judge comes"
That could refer to Frollo as a judge or God's final judgement in the Book of Revelation of the Bible
Hunchback of Notre Dame is my favorite Disney movie. Hands down.
Part of why Phoebus gets a redemption arc is because they took Phoebus from the book (an absolute scumbag) and another book character, Pierre Gringoire, (a well-meaning but dorky Victor Hugo self-insert) and made them one character for the Disney adaptation.
Definitely a unique movie for Disney. Glad they made it.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies Bc it was dark. It was in your face. A work of art.
I’ve been waiting for this for years!! If only you posted it tomorrow on Topsy Turvy Day!
I was under the impression that Phoebis was returning from the crusades, that’s my guess anyway
It is just upsetting that Michael Jackson never got to do a song for this movie. It would've been incredible.
107 Facts About Craig of the Creek and Victor and Valentino please.
Fun fact : Tony Jay voiced Shere Khan in a Jungle book tv series
Yes
Also in The Jungle Book 2 (2003)
By far the darkest animated film ever produced by Disney and I love it 💓
This was a great list! Thank you, Channel Frederator!
THIS MADE MY DAYYYY I LOVE YOU
My favorite Disney movie of all time 😊
Awesome! Could you also do 107 Facts about The Wuzzles and mention about the petition on the website Change.
there actually was a hunchback in that era in france, during the construction of notre dame, but he was a stone mason, he was a shy awkward worker, he was not held prisoner to te church by any of the clergy.
This is my second favorite Disney movie next to Mulan

I love this movie so much!
I'll never understand how the song hellfire didn't win an award
because Hunback when it came up was contravershal due how dark it was.
Thank you. I needed this today
You know the movie 🍿 was originally gonna be released in Christmas 🤶 of 1995, but then when Jeffrey Katzenberg departs that made the company shake things up ⬆️, it was moved to June 21, 1996.
Well the freakishly strong part is kind of believable, you’d think a freakishly large build would equal being freakishly strong
1:58 100% why I like Claude Frollo better as a judge.
Could you do 107 facts about The Smurfs
In the movie 🍿, I like 👍 calling them gargoyles and they’re not in Quasimodo’s imagination 💭, they’re alive.
Thank you very much for using the term Romani instead of the g-slur!
Great video guys

Um...sorry to disappoint you, but Fact # 11 about the spire is actually not true. The spire was built between 1220 and 1230. It was removed in the 1700s due to damage but was rebuilt sixty years later.
Awesome! Could you do 107 facts about the Wuzzles?
I’m Romani and I don’t get why Esmeralda is so underrated 😢
Why can't there be Disney films like this anymore 😩
Sadly because everyone is so easily offended
@@Xaforn I suppose 😕
One of my favorite Disney movies
Maybe Esmerelda wore the red dress because at that festival, they were doing everything opposite.
#52 - That's not Achilles. That's Snowball. Achilles is gray (probably an Andalusian) and belongs to Phoebus. Snowball is a black Friesian and belongs to Frollo.
#60 - I'm still bitter about that. And about Disney taking Clopin's scythe away.

My favorite Disney movie! I wish Disney would go back to making such great films like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis, Mulan and the rest of the Disney Renaissance movies.
as a romani woman I would like to ask ,since when is the colour Red is unlucky in my culture? i think this could be more of a French roma tradition but in general red is not unlucky. Infact its quite a common colour for our traditional clothes
I saw this four times in theaters.
im happy that they finally did a video for this movie but the voiceover is so flat and feels halfhearted, even for a huge fan of the movie this was really hard for me to sit through. its upsetting when your other 107 vids have so much more energy to them so this didnt really give this movie the credit it deserves with just laziness of the script reading. it takes away from the video so much and its disappointing to say the least :/
