Very underrated band, should of gained so much more credit and success. This song drives home such a powerful message of plight and poverty. The song is delivered with excellent lead vocals from Gary, and brilliant backing vocals from Roger. The music arrangement is absolutely outstanding with the very exceptional bass line running through it. They were a different class to most music back then, and still are today. I've seen them live twice, and they reproduce all of their songs just as good live as the studio versions. True artists, not manufactured. 👍😎
An outstanding passage of writing ✍️…from you …but its hardly surprising..aren’t you the one who said “The More we value things, the less we value ourselves”😉
he Saved my life. his music got me through a time i never thought i could , God Bless You And Your Grandad due to him i have two beautiful daughters I'll be forever grateful.
Love this 👍 my fave Christians track. Watched Garry perform at Leamington Spa last weekend, thoroughly enjoyable from start2finish. My Christians Top10...10 Born Again. 9 Words. 8 All Talk. 7 Greenbank Drive. 6 I Found Out. 5 Save A Soul In Every Town. 4 Forgotten Town. 3 When The Fingers Point. 2 Ideal World. 1 Hooverville. Garry's debut solo album Your Cool Mystery is well worth a number of spins (in particular Cry, and Silent Echo) 👍
What a song, the lyrics are still relevant to today as they were on its release during the height of Thatcherism in 1987. Hooverville falls about the false promises of politicians and the neglect of the North. Gary sings with absolute passion and suppressed anger, how does he keep the tears away? How the Christians never broke big time is beyond me, I am desperate to see them live, since 1987.
@@johncwik6618 Thats the inspiration for the name, but its not an old song, it was written by Garry Christian in the 80's, and inspired by the poverty he saw in his childhood in Liverpool.
I believe this brilliant & underrated band did not achieve the success that they truly deserved , is that they were deeply critical of those pulling the very big strings. This song certainly did & rightly so.
and they promised YOU the world........ that the streets were paved with SILVER AND GOLD....... and they promised YOU a roof over your head......and like fools YOU believed every last word they said.
One of the best bands the uk have ever produced. Sadly missed out by too many. Superb voices. Synced like three coats of paint. What a song though. Wow
Well they paid furlough for millions of people during covid to help them to keep paying their rent or mortgage and to put food on the table. There's no pleasing some people...
I'm 62 and this great song brings me back to the 80's and I'm 25 again.

Sad I never got to meet my Grandad. So talented music 🎶

Truly brilliant 🌟 if you have some of his talent use it, we'll love you too Lucas ❤
Had an amazing voice, it complimented Garry's perfectly. He may not have lived the longest but I'm sure he lived to the fullest.
Talented ain't the word fantastic group.
His vocals make this song.
Saw them perform with Belinda Carlisle in Portsmouth a few weeks ago what an honour, amazing band and can't get this song out of my head now
Haunting & with so much meaning. Love it. Roger's voice was amazing. Lovely guy, Rest in Peace x
Brilliant song from a brilliant debut album. The christians never fully got the pat on the back that they merited back in the late 80s.
What a group What a voice ❤❤❤
Saw the Christians live last night and they were fantastic.
Fantastic song with a really good meaning.

Still sounds great. What a band
They were responsible for some excellent songs in the late 1980's. This is one of them.....
Their debut album was IMHO one of the finest debut albums by anyone

Hooverville was first used during the American 1930s depression .

I saw them last night at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, backing Level 42 up, only on for 40 mins or so, but they were great! 😊

I loved this song back in the day and still do.
This and 'Ideal World'. Two REALLY distinct tunes with a solemn message.
What a fabulous song, group. You are loved in Liverpool. Had a crush on the singer. Still do.!
Chills from the intro- nothing else sounds like this.
I still love your sound
Takes me back to 1988 and the Liverpool Empire. What a night
The backing vocal really finishes the song beautifully
Cracking tune.Thanks for sharing.
Seen them in my local town so good to see them 30 years too late. Still great!
Saw the Christians at Bewdley 2022.Brilliant.

Ahh good old days, remember pinching my bros cassette he’d recorded from radio 😀 rip roger always loved him ❤
My favourite is towards the end of this song which was sadly missed out in this video.
Top quality didn't think about the meaning when it first came out but it has carried its self
Thanks for the upload
As powerful as ever given current affairs
Oh God, that voice.
Beautiful guitar break before final chorus.
Love them. X
Wat a tune!!!
So marvellous......5⭐
So good ❤
Best group ever!
This should be the theme tune to my channel.
See you all again at The Jam house 10th October
HERE WE FUCKING GO!!!
I wanted to marry them when I was young. So handsome. Lol
❤
tried to do a video like that today the Health and Safety people would go nuts
'GET CARTER' as a SONG.
A classic from the Christians 😂
Rest in peace Roger 😂
Wondering if Hoovervile is actually Liverpool? They come from Liverpool!
more like 1960s overspill areas of liverpool like kirby huyton and speke
There was 8 Hooverville shanty camps in America , named after President Hoover during the great depression .
no 1/........
This record relates todays government as well as Thatcher's 80s
Relates to all Tory governments.
Well they paid furlough for millions of people during covid to help them to keep paying their rent or mortgage and to put food on the table. There's no pleasing some people...
Needs re-releasing .
i guess double denim was in fashion back then
You should know better than any one 😂
Some people still think it is......
It was in New York
No it must have been a dare. Fancy dress for the video age.
1980s not 1980's
Very unterated song and band x
An anti Tory song from the 80's, still relevant after all these years. Tory's out.
Get on yer bike, when we got there , treated worse than illegal imagrants and we are from Liverpool.
Scouser ere
A song for Brexit
