Knott's Berry Farm Xcelerator 112 & 117 MPH Testing Runs!!!

- It's been long rumored that Xcelerator at Knott's Berry Farm did some test runs way back in 2002 to see if the mechanics of the ride could handle a 100+ MPH blast that could lead Cedar Fair towards a possible record breaking ride. That ride later on would be known as Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. Thanks to an old friend of ours, America's Coaster Network and videographer Josh Baker, we have video of two test runs that sent the hydraulic launched roller coaster at speed of 112 & 117 MPH. With speeds meant to push the limits of a design structurally and more, the runs were not without some side effects. The fiberglass front shell of the train cracked in half and a rumored hydraulic line blew off the motor. If you've ever seen or been on Xcelerator, you will notice the EXTREME difference in ride cycle time in this un-edited / un-altered video of those runs!

Daniel Sanders WHATS CHANTING???
@@XGaming1 yelling repeatedly
The most funny thing I’ve heard all day!
ill take it! my god that looks awesome
legit that would be the most intense airtime known to man
Most deadly airtime
It would have an excitement rating of 1.46, an intensity rating of 25.25, and a nausea rating of 14.76.
*cries in Skyrush*
This.
This is how I wanna die.
Ol' Misery same
GP be GP
Coastaku but their not gp
Coastaku you would physically die your body would get split in half from the negatives at the top of the top hat
If this was xcelerator's normal speed it would have gaven knotts the word record of the fastest coaster in 2002
Also the world's fastest roller coaster acceleration.
Gaven isn’t a word.
It also would have ripped peoples legs off because it reached more than-2gs 😭
@@GoesByJ -2.2 is the maximum the human body can go to. Apparently it can only be a pop too because if its sustained people will red out.
@@alecvip7562 actually it’s -3g
Hydraulic Launch Coaster 1 looks too intense for me
^much win.
Haha!
Brandon Redman lol
*Your ride exceeds g force limits*
*This may affect the excitement factor of the ride*
Bruh theres no such thing as an intense ride

Excpet the pirate ships that swing back and forth fr those are scary af
The reason why Cedar Fair did this was to see if the hydraulic launch system could work over 100mph because they were thinking about building Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point. The coaster was originally going to use either LSM launches or LIM launches, however the park would have had to remove Gemini. Cedar Point didn't want to do that so Intamin decided to use the hydraulic system of launch.
That’s interesting. Do you know why they would’ve had to make a compromise by taking down Gemini?
@@bluecollarben9836 the launch track for LSM or LIM would've had to have been longer. Dragster's current plot of land only fit a hydraulic model
Oh the irony. They should have gone with LSMs from the start.
@@christopherfinch-mccollum1753 nope. Lsms are far more powerful today, and much more efficient. Ride would've probably never opened with lsms.
Way to pawn off another CZcamsrs work without acknowledging them, douchebag
omg....that looks fantastic the airtime on that top hat would be nuts
Best and last airtime of your life probably!
No plans to make this happen with passengers then?
Haha no!
@@MidwayMayhemChannel Yeah you would most definitely red out.
Imagine the airtime going over the top hat!
My guess is somewhere in the range of -3 to -4 g's at least....your body would more than likely rip in half at the waist, your legs staying in the train or you'd have some major internal injuries.
T.M.I.
Midway Mayhem Sounds fun!😂😂😂😂
Ejected
@@PeninsulaOfThrills well they call it ejection airtime for a reason.
Well ur not going to get a rollback on it anymore😂
Aircraft Carrier: Nobody can beat my launch system!
Xcelerator: Hold my beer.
This is what made Dragster happen without having to remove the classic Gemini.
PS: I thought that there was no way video of this existed but I am amazed. Keep up the good work.
I would SOOOOOOO love to be on those trains!
Reminds me of watching the park inspector go on an ultra-extreme coaster in RCT when no one else would.
Yeah I’ll sign a waiver for it. I’ll be back ok, right?
I can’t be the only one who is genuinely surprised the train didn’t fly off on the second run. Like, just watch it. It looks like something the GP would make in RCT!
Strata Coaster 1 has crashed!
Knotts should create a coaster enthusiast night where they run xcelorator like this
They’d make so much money because everyone would be going
They’d probably also have a bunch of lawyers on tap for when the class-action lawsuits started to come in from injuries
I can infer that this is real because I have personally ridden the ride many times before watching this video and when you go up to words the drop, the coaster usually slowly goes over the edge but in these two test runs, they whip over the edge much quicker than usual.
Knotts Berry Farm: *builds Xcelerator* SPEED IS KEY
Xcelerator: Nope *cable snaps*
Xcelerator 2.0
Ride it at Knotts Berry Farm today!
Unless it’s closed for the day....
Smokie its litterally closed almost every day
That looks absolutely insane. I wish this became a reality. Even if it went up to 100mph that would still be super intense
the airtime would literally rip you in half
The negative g’s on the top had would tear your body apart at the hip.
@@oceanthresher6184 it wouldn’t
This is one of the craziest videos I’ve ever seen 😳😳😳
It looks like something straight out of a game or something
Good lord they had that thing absolutely yeetin' over the top hat.
I really want to know if that would be survivable/if it would injure riders
That would be some wicked airtime up there!!!
So this basically proves that the top hat could've been 350+ feet with the SAME launch track length!! Do-dodonpa would have been left in the dust XD
Instant red out over that top hat🤣
Looks Like Something Straight Out Of Planet Coaster
Holy shit😳! Xcelerator is one of the only coasters it's hard for me to put my hands up on the launch cause im just chicken shit and it's so damn intense! I couldn't imagine 100 plus! That shit looks like it's moving in fast motion!
Felt my spine RIP just watching this
The airtime would insaneee at the top hat
It would be, it'd be so insane it'd be the last thing you experienced .
What a valuable clip!
What if that top hat was an "inside" one like MR. FREEZE? Maybe the riders could deal with "some strong" g-forces even after the completely insane launch at 112 or 117 mph! :'D
Sounds like a JET
lol I'd never ride it going that fast. It's not designed to do that.
Of course not...but sure is interesting to see!
Midway Mayhem
COUGH COUGH Do-Dodonpa
If it was never built to do that why would they have done it? Sorry if that looked rude
Does this mean that any Intamin accelerator can have its speed changed? If so then Rita should have its launch increased to 85mph so it actually has something worthwhile
Those negative G's over the top hat look absolutely insane. I wish TTD and KK did that.
Eccentric Gamer i know your comment is six months old but wdym by negative g’s??
I don’t think people want to die by riding it.
@@diegogonzales9653 he means airtime. It's that feeling that you're gonna fly out of your seat
Let's just remember Do-Dodonpa still accelerates faster.
@Chris mckeithen ? Wdym
do dodonpa doesnt have murderous ass airtime
Then after TTD, Intamin wanted to push hydraulics even further and that eventually led to Kingda Ka a few years later on 2005. Still the tallest and second fastest (Formula Rossa took that crown away from Kingda Ka with its 149 MPH top speed) full-circuit roller coaster in the world standing at 456 feet in height. I wonder how much further Intamin is gonna push hydraulics in a launch system? will we eventually see the world's first peta coaster? a coaster that stands more than 500 feet tall with a speed of 160 MPH or greater? Who knows? It is certainly a possibility. I sure know one day Kingda Ka's height is gonna be eclipsed sometime in the future. would it be tomorrow (it is March 1st at the time this comment is typed up)? or further down the line? who knows? only time will tell.
Spoiler alert: Intamin completely stopped using hydraulic launches :(
That airtime would hurt!
It doesn't look very fast after the top hat. If they put in test dummies it would be even more impressive!
You may say why would you do this
Well
Y the hell not
Yup! Answer: Because they could :-)
Those negative Gs would literally rip you apart, that’s wild bro
Can Knott's do a thoosie event/night where they do this?
I wonder what the G-Force would be? 0-117 mph in around 2 seconds probably pulls some Gs
117 miles per hour = 52.3 meters per second
52.3/2 = 26.15
2.66 horizontal Gs
She's so pretty
Where did the info on the actual launch speeds come from? I don't doubt that it's launching faster than normal, but 112mph and 117mph seem a little unrealistic, maybe....
Red Force climbs to a height of 367ft (almost double Xcelerator) with basically a 112mph launch.
The first train (112mph) in this video doesn't like it's going anywhere near fast enough to continue rising to almost double the height!
The second train (117mph) is clearly going quote fast over the top. But then Top Thrill Dragster has a height of 420ft (more than double Xcelerator) with a speed of 120mph.
So when comparing these figures to other coasters, they don't seem to add up that well
I wouldn't be surprised if the launches were like 90mph and 100mph. Both of which would still be epic to experience when it's designed to go 82mph! 😆
“Then they do a 50 mile per hour test run..then a 500 mile per hour test run..and a 1,000 mile per ho-And it OPENS TO THE PUBLIC LOOK AT THAT. :) (reference to A brief history of Xelerator
They should run it like that
it would rip you in half
Attention riders:. This ride may not rollback due to the excess speed on this ride.
People would end up on la Palma Ave if they ran it at that speed.
Maybe even Orangethorpe 💀
Why can’t they normally operate it at those speeds?
Would cause too much stress on the track and trains, also the intense g's going over that top hat would likely kill you, or at least make you pass out.
I'm pretty sure the airtime over the top hat wouldn't be harmful since it takes hours upon hours of hanging upside down to even get injured from it, but yeah they would need some carbon nanotube upstop wheels on this thing to ensure the upstops didn't break
I would love to ride xcelerator at 117 mph
It's all fun and games until something breaks, lol
GET ME ON THAT TRAIN BRUH
Talk about getting a rollback on this thing...
Strata Coaster 1 has broken down…
Did they measure the g force?
I wonder if it’ll be faster when it re-opens
Is these videos from 2002?
shane brown yes
Is it true they did this to show that a hydraulic launch could go up to this speed for ttd?
yes
Now that's what I'd call ejector airtime!
It tested that fast?? I’m actually surprised
Look at how red it used to be ... Now its Pink hahahah
Kinda cool and worrying how it can reach those higher speeds 😳
OH HELL NAW MY SKINNY ASS WILL FALL OUT OF THAT TOP HAT😂😂😂💀💀💀💀💀💀
they could of broken the acceleration record if they wanted to at the time. since dodonpa did 0-107mph in 1.8 seconds
how much airtime would u get there?
Sustained negative 1.7 G’s I suppose?
More like -3gs
oh my lord
The airtime tho
Why didn’t I know it looked like a car?
When I make the hill too small in planet coaster and accidentally make it -12gs
😮
Wow I wonder how fast my run was. Probably 82, you can't push it with passengers
You would literally get ejected out of knotts
That is probley causeing a lot of stress on the trains
Imagine how forceful that launch would be hahaha
Lol and it goes all the way down to 82 miles per hour at the end
I feel like that’s still not as fast as 117 mph
Me in planet coaster
When will u make another volcano bay update?
:(
Ikr I'm not waiting for the mine blower tho
We did one last week and often do them every 2 weeks or so. We should have another one sometime soon!
This is Josh from ACN's video
It looks like it's going 95 mph tbh
that would be cool if they sped it up a little to make it a little faster but safe since it's capable of it
If they wanted it to go this fast why didn’t they build it taller?
Carson’s Coasters Many cities have limit caps for their structures. Buildings (or anything else) are only permitted to reach a certain height. "Suburban" places in particular don't tend like big-ass (and noisy) structures in the middle of their town.
In addition, taller rides need more surronding room to support them, and some places just don't have the open space capacity to pull them off.
Jonathan Washington but in this exact park they have a ride that is 312 feet tall and this is only 205 feet
Carson’s Coasters it was the first of its kind
I'm pretty sure they didn't intend to do this and Intamin was just playing with it to see how the hydraulic launch system would react to launching a train above 100 miles per hour. remember, top thrill dragster had been ordered at this time, and top thrill dragster was originally going to use LSMs instead of a hydraulic launch. It was switched to a hydraulic launch because Intamin offered to do so to shorten the launch track and let Gemini live.
there is no way that's 117 mph. it's much faster than 82 mph but that wouldn't make it even halfway up ttd
That’s what I’m saying
@@shawnspencer8766 are you sure
@@shawnspencer8766 I believe you it’s just so weird because it seems like Ttd goes so much faster then that
No way it's going 117. The difference between 84 would be to big for the elements.
Aircraft carrier catapult?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_catapult
SandCrabNews it uses pretty much the same system
Unless your head is completely on the headrest, you’d probably be dead before the end of the launch.
Do dodonpa accelerates even faster than this
you do realize there are coasters in the world that still accelerate faster than the 119 mph test run right? lmao
The real problem is that the top hat is way too short for those speeds. The negative Gs at the top would be deadly.
Plz make the ride faster
MarsIsChillin YT i mean you’d likely be ripped in half if it operated how it does shown here
