The rarest of female voices --- a TRUE contralto ---- as rare as hen's teeth. Marian Anderson, along with Paul Robeson, were endowed with vocal gifts so awesome that it amazes me that the world was lucky enough to have these two vocal paragons exist at all. Their recordings keep them alive.

I CAN! for those you had the honor and pleasure of listening to her...whichever means, face-to-face must have been extraordinary, but I used to listen to her as a child from an LP VINYL RECORD (yes, I'm that old ;)) that my daddy had bought back in the 70's. I was very young but I shivered when I first listened to her...and still do.

However, I don't know what I should say because when I'm listening to this song, I cry. Her voice is too beautiful but is very sad... I really respect her and African-American people. Because African-American people have strong spirits for their lives. I learn it from African-American music and culture. I really appreciate Jesus because I could meet African-American music and culture. I'll love it whole my life and really respect it.

Long live Marian Anderson in our hearts across the globe! Regards from Catalonia.

It reminds me that down through the ages, God has always been a refuge for the oppressed and suffering - giving hope of eternal life to those who receive Christ and shelter under His mighty wings.

Mark Jones I am speechless...Wow!!!!! God Bless You for sharing such Greatness! May Peace Prevail for Our Nation and Our People as we move forward (I try to put my worries and trepidation to rest, but my heart cannot be still) I PRAY Our Lord breaks through in the fullest way, to fill this man who is set to be our next President with TRUE COMPASSION & DEEP CONCERN FOR ALL OF US... The Almighty loves us, doesn't matter if we've sinned most of our lives; Mr. Trump only need to pray with an earnest and true heart to the Lord for the guidance we all sense he needs.
It is a huge responsibility he has fought to win & I am not entirely sure if his heart is in the right place. That is, is he ready to do what is BEST for the milllions of Americans who are sad, angry & suffering.... in ALL the many, many ways humans hurt.
He won the vote of many disillusioned people who believed his words that he would shake up the D.C. ESTABLISHMENT... the lifelong snakes who've made their living off the poor not only in the USA but all over the world! So far his actions have worried me and thousands very deeply...
I will miss the Obamas so much it hurts; even though our President only accomplished a fraction of what he wanted to (what can a President do when the Legislature refuses to work with him? Not a whole lot!! HOWEVER, it's miraculous (given the constant opposition he faced ) to realize ALL the GOOD President Obama DID get accomplished!
Even with the partisan fighting that has ruined the hearts of many a Legislator for years & years who began with heads filled with dreams of the good they would do for the people... until they were disabused of their dreams . I apologize, I hope I didn't bring you down... I just love this Nation and ALL IT'S PEOPLE and I am very worried... I feel like we're moving backwards and that's not good, not with all we've suffered through! No need to repeat those times. When a woman with the grace of Miss Marian Anderson was snubbed by petty fools, thank God she found the strength to sing at the Lincoln Memorial. I understand she was by nature very gentle with manners befitting the amazing woman that she was (I am sure she shied away from "rocking the boat" ) I thank God she found the bravery to answer the petty foolishness in such a majestic way! Dear God Please Bless and Watch Over Us All!
      ❤&✌🏻

Of "Deep River", Roland Hayes writes: "At the source of this tune ring the words from Joshua: ''When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan." It is primitive in its wonder; yes, ecstasy before the incredible. "As God was with Moses, so shall I be with him at the time of my delivery." In the embrace of death lies fulfillment. As celebrated as the theme of Beethoven's Fifth, the musical phrase, "Deep River, my home is over Jordan," lies deeply rooted in the consciousness of mankind. It has a suggestive quality of inescapable power. Three times the last phrase, "I want to cross over into Jordan," is repeated. That repetition, a sort of incantation, is not unlike the litanies of the Catholic Church. Repetitions are phenomena of imaginative, poetic intoxication that, choosing word sounds irrespective of meaning, identifies the person with the mood."

It expresses longing like the George Herbert poem The Glance. (Herbert's poetry was based on the psalms). Final stanza:
If thy first glance so powerfull be,
      A mirth but open'd, and seal'd up again;
What wonders shall we feel, when we shall see
      Thy full-ey'd love!
When thou shalt look us out of pain,
And one aspect of thine spend in delight
More then a thousand sunnes disburse in light,
      In heav'n above.
It's a powerful poem, even for someone like me who has no religious beliefs. Likewise with Deep River.

What a voice! Beautiful and somewhat sad! Paul Robeson's interpretation of this song is not so sad. Nina Simone, too, the pop/jazz pianist and singer, wanted to go to the Curtis School in Philadelphia for classical piano but could not because she was 'black'. Yet she became the "High Priestess of Soul" and world renowned. Unfortunately, today's retribution of reverse racism against 'whites' is not the solution. The content of character, as Martin Luther King Jr stated, is the only way.

yes, but I would like to turn that around: Eleanor Roosevelt once lent a hand to “no less than” Marian Anderson. In common cause, against racism. She also had a close working relationship with Mary McLeod Bethune. These ties reflect well on Roosevelt; Bethune and Anderson were women of huge accomplishment with or without ER

Woke up from sleep this morning with this song going through my mind. The spiritual metaphor came clear to me and I wanted to hear it sung. I didn't expect this soul wrenching performance, Ms Anderson I had only basically heard of before. Thanks for the upload.
