I went to SL recently, they throw garbage everywhere and don't regard animal life as most westerners do now.
There's no lions or tigers to hunt them they are using it to carry the tooth... this is kind of a practice... for them if not they just bunked into a lorry for transportation...this respect only for selected elephants others just an elephants for these people

His name is "Nadungamuwa Raja" born in 1953. He is one of the two tuskers gifted my Mysore maharaja to a Sri Lankan monk, who cured his relatives long lasting illness. Currently he's the main casket bearer of the procession of Esala in kandy Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is now the top of my bucket list when I do my 6 month escape to SE Asia. I love that you protect and respect these majestic animals. But I won’t lie and say that I am a fan of the chains or the very sharp Stick the Mahouts have to use to break the spirit of an animal. I wish they could all be protected and free once and for all. He’s the highest ranked royal elephant ( mangala hasthi raaja) in Sri lanka 🇱🇰. His elephant wise cast: Saddhantha. So he gets the military escort while he travels as a respect to him. The most luckiest elephant who has the right to hold the lord Buddha’s relics on his forehead.
So lucky to live his life in chains.

To all the foreigners who are watching this. This is the elephant that has chosen to carry the tooth relic of Buddha which is in the temple of tooth, Kandy. He is going in the procession (perahera in local language). It is one of the most important rituals for Sri Lankan Buddhists. That's why he is given such a security.
The poor thing looks old tired overweight and neglected it’s poor tail looked broken in 45 places and why the chain? It had a giant cut on its hind flank. I’m surprised I didn’t see liquid coming out of its head from being so stressed out. If this was so important why did they use such a sick animal?

The chains are not what worried me it was the branch covering the chain so I could not see the wound it caused that made me upset not the chains alone. The beast looks horribly unhealthy with cuts and injuries everywhere you look. It’s tail looked like an accordion that’s not what elephant tails look like. If this is the best looking animal they have just imagine what the rest of those “sacred” animals look like.
