The first time seeing this video we were in the TV room at the ambulance service I was working at. One of the guys commented how pretty the girl in the kitchen was. The rest of us fell on the floor laughing. Had to break it to him that it was the drummer, Roger Taylor. LOL
He IS a very pretty girl though. 😁

The dancers in the middle section of the video are members of the Royal Ballet. Freddie wanted to dance with them, so they made it happen. Also, Roger Taylor was stunning in drag.
Freddy was an artist in all different definitions of that word. He was a graphic designer, fashion designer, entertainer, songwriter and one of the most unique voices of the last century if not millennium. He had one of those voices that you recognize the moment he starts singing.
John Deacon wrote the song from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement.
The video was meant as a parody of the ITV soap Coronation Street. Freddie is the housewife, John is the grandmother, Roger is the schoolgirl, and Brian is another housewife. The idea of the video come from Roger's girlfriend.
At some point it was inevitable a band named Queen would do a show or at least s video in drag.
This vid nearly screwed there American chances because they dresed as women.
The band and especially Freddie was never afraid to make fool of themselves for having and giving some fun. 😆 Pls, check out Freddie performing The Great Pretender.
John wrote the song, Roger's partner came up with the idea of the boys being in drag (dressing as characters from long running soap 'Coronation Street '. Freddie had offered to shave his mustache, but was told it would be funnier if it stayed. Oh, and the 'on fire' alarm clock was a device called a 'Teasmade', which was supposed to wake the user up with a cup/mug of tea in the morning.

I was introduced to Queen in the 70's... I was working as a roughneck... In South and West Texas... Drilling Oil Wells and Gas wells.. Absolutely love Queen from Day One...
This video was a blast. They took chances and pulled it off, I've never performed in drag, so I've never known how to get comfortable like that. This was gutsy, and amusing.

From what I understand, the original Teasmade machines had a reputation of kettle malfunction… but later models were vastly improved.

From what I've seen referenced, this video was the idea of John Deacon, the bass guitar player. It was based on classic British comedies and theatrical traditions. As an example, during the time that William Shakespeare was writing plays, ALL roles were played by men.

I just watched a cover of a terrific Queen song that you will just love!!!! The Tenors "Who Wants To Live Forever" featuring Lindsay Sterling. The guys are dressed like cool vampires and Lindsay's violin only enhances the song and video. Tugs at my heart everytime. Hope you are having a beautiful day!!!!❤

Freddie definitely did a costume change for this number when they performed at Wembley stadium back in the '90s - he came onstage in drag, with the hoover (vacuum cleaner) just like in this video - I can't remember if there was a set change as well, or they may just have shown shots from the promo video on the huge screen behind them, I can't remember

(Because they did more-than-one show at Wembley Stadium in 1984; they just weren't professionally filmed, unfortunately.) The only video footage I've seen with Fred dressed in drag, was from 1985: at Rock In Rio; in Australia (they're both awful video quality, tho) and in Japan (which was the only decent video footage I've ever seen).🖖

Avant garde performance, circa 1984 ;D. Freddie's voice never lets you down, but honestly, it was confusing as heck even back when it was new. Remember, MTV banned it ;P
This wasn't their video that was actually banned by MTV. It had happened 2 years before with Body Language which ended becoming their biggest US hit from Hot Space.
Whenever i see the posts about if you could bring one person back for a concert who would it be. I will always say Freddie. Think of the things Queen would do in concert back in the day, imagine what they would be able to do with todays tech

This video got Queen banned on MTV and vh1, they thought it was all Freddie's idea to dress up in drag. It wasn't. Freddie said Roger, Brian and John ran to jump into their frocks but they all had fun.

the video was banned in the US they didn't get it we got what the idea was in the UK Fredy asked the producer if he should shave his mustache off for the clip they thought it would be more fun with it on.

That was another time in 80 it was shocking and controversial. Many music stations banned that song, and tv stations did not want to show that on TV. The band had legally problems.

In case no one mentioned it, the band were fans of the drama, Coronation Street, which is where they got the idea from. This video, as well as the one for "Body Language" from Hot Space, was banned by MTV
And what they did to the "Bicycle Race" video was unforgivable (if not unexpected) blur mania.
Only Body Language was banned, it's just a myth that this one was also banned.

It was a tongue-in-cheek homage to 'Coronation Street' - a popular soap opera. John Deacon wrote it as a women's liberation anthem of sorts.
The idea for wearing drag was the idea of either Roger Taylor or his girlfriend, depending what you read. Wearing drag in England is a time-honored practice, especially for comic effect - Benny Hill, Monty Python, among many others - so they thought it'd be fun.
The drag got the video banned by MTV, and hurt the bands' popularity in the states. Huge hit in England.
If I remember rightly because of the Drag sequences in the video clip, the US representatives did not want to release this song as the single in the USA. The video clip also tanked on MTV because of the same reason. The drag sequence parody of a UK soap opera was not appreciated by American audiences.
This video is what got Queen banned on American MTV back in the day. When MTV still was a relevant music channel. Queen's status in the US took a hit because of MTV and their banned content. Queen "Are Responsible For MTV's First Ever Banned Song."
In fact, as this song was only censored on American MTV, it continued to be a success in other countries, especially in England, where everyone understood and loved the reference that the video made to a soap opera of the time, Body Language, which was the first song completely banned from MTV. , even entering the record books for this
