I feel sorry for those extras that sensed something was off, but were too afraid to say something for fear of interrupting a good scene. Their anxiety probably went through the roof because they were confused about whether it was real or not.
This is why you ALWAYS have a safe signal when you’re doing any sort of scene like this. That way the people on set can tell the difference between a convincing performance and genuine distress.

Isla Fisher almost died filming this stunt. The crew had to push a button she couldn't reach in the box to get her out in the time. It was the scariest thing experience in her career😨😲

I’ve always loved this scene and learning that she almost drown when filming it is terrifying. Btw many people seem to think that she was drowning in this particular take and it is “real”, but did she ever clarify that her drowning take made to the final cut of the movie, or are people merely speculating? I know it is hard to tell when her struggling for her life and asking for help is literally part of the script, but this can definitely be her acting. If it made to the final production I don’t know how I feel about it, it sounds pretty scary to me.
That’s what I came here to find out. So far haven’t seen any first hand proof of it. All of what we see could be acted and before or after the take where she nearly drowned

Captain here: When filming, one of the metals got tangled so she couldnt release her self, she was actually about to drown until she started to point to the director to press the button (emergency) to let go off the chains. Everyone in the meantime kept acting and they thought it was part of the act. Isla manage to get away safely, but the director decided to keep the failed act in the movie since it was more genuine.
